In this video, Resonance in the Series RLC circuit has been explained.
So, in this video, what is resonance in series RLC circuit, and what are the different parameters (Q factor, Bandwidth) related to Series RLC circuit has been discussed and in the later part of the video, expression for the resonant frequency, Q factor and Bandwidth of the Series RLC circuit have been derived.
What is Resonance in RLC circuit?
Resonance is the phenomenon in the electrical circuit, where the output of the circuit is maximum at one particular frequency.
And that frequency is known as the resonant frequency.
At the resonant frequency, The capacitive reactance and inductive reactance are equal. ( XL = XC), and the impedance of the circuit will be purely resistive. Not only that, but the value of impedance will be minimum at the resonant frequency. And hence the value of current will be maximum.
So, this series RLC circuit provides the tunability at one particular frequency and this principle is used in radio communication for channel selection.
Now, to define the selectivity of the resonant circuit, two parameters are widely used.
1) Q factor
2) Bandwidth
Q-factor:
Q-factor defines the sharpness of this resonant curve, or it defines the selectivity of the circuit.
It is the ratio of energy stored in the reactive element in the circuit to the energy dissipated across the resistor in the circuit.
So, larger the value of this Q in the circuit, the better the selectivity provided by the circuit.
Q= 1/R √(L/C) = wL/R= 1/(wCR)
Bandwidth:
The bandwidth of the circuit is defined as the difference between the -3dB frequencies or half power frequency.
The smaller, the bandwidth of the circuit, the better will be the selectivity provided by the circuit.
B.W= R/L = w/Q
The timestamps for the different topics which are discussed in the video is given below:
0:45 What is Resonance in the RLC circuit?
7:15 Quality factor
7: 57 Bandwidth of the series resonant circuit
9:19 Derivation for the expression of resonant frequency
11:36 Derivation of bandwidth of the series resonant circuit
16:57 Expression of the Quality factor in terms of the circuit parameter.
This video will be helpful to all students of science and engineering in understanding the concept of resonance in the series RLC circuit.

Because when the capacitor is charging then the inductor lost its energy. they both can't store energy together so, the maximum will be given by one.

Sorry to all who say it's is a good explanation - I can only assume you already understand the topic. There's no explanation at all, only a description of outcomes. If the purpose was to show a student knows how to recount the headlines, well done. It's OK as a revision video, no use as a teaching/learning video.
@midnightsat1989
@midnightsat1989 4 года назад
Sorry if it's a silly doubt but why are Xl and Xc complex?
@myawoo
@myawoo Год назад
Impedance is the complex quantity. XL & Xc are real. Z = jXL for inductor Z = -jXc capacitor You have to study in detail about phasors to understand this. A sinusoidally varying quantity can be represented by a complex number which is the phasor. This representation makes the computation easy. This is the most important topic in AC steady state analysis.

Thanks a lot for your brilliant explanation. and can anyone please tell me, if we need oscillation in a series circuit, then why we need capacitor and inductor? why don't we just use an AC voltage source and resistor? Because, you know, the AC voltage source itself can provide oscillation to the circuit, as it's a sinusoidal function (Vs = Vo sin(ωt + Φ)).
@TamalBarua-nv2gp
@TamalBarua-nv2gp 3 года назад
Also, can anyone please tell me, from the 2min 38sec scene, why oscillation in energy is seen in the circuit after replacing the AC voltage source with a short circuit?
@ALLABOUTELECTRONICS
@ALLABOUTELECTRONICS 3 года назад
Because, the inductor and capacitors stores the energy for some time and then releases. So, there is a continuous transfer of energy between inductor and capacitor. Thats why there will be an oscillation.
@ALLABOUTELECTRONICS
@ALLABOUTELECTRONICS 3 года назад
In your future course, you will learn that, this LC circuit is used as oscillator. (For more information, you can go through the playlist on oscillators and multivibrators. But for a moment, if I tell you in a simple way then this type of circuit is used to generate the oscillations of particular frequency. Or it is also used as a frequency selective circuit ( as a. filter to filter out particular band of frequency). Every time the source signal of required frequency may not be available, or to generate that source, these type of circuit is useful. I hope it will clear your doubt. If you still have any doubt, let me know here.
