Arch Duke it’s a good thing for some people but most of us want a story driven game. If there isn’t a story then we at least want more creativity like level builders or cool settings. I mean this could be fun for a bit but I feel like this game would get old fast.
Serious Sam 1 was my go-to game when I was like 7 years old lol.. I remember being absolutely terrified but just couldn't stop cause it was so fun. Aside from the pretty bland environment, Serious Sam 4 seems to remain super fun when it comes to ridiculous over the top combat

I've played SS: The Second Encounter back in the day and this game's unique aspect was that eerie terrifying feeling it gives you and the sheer number of enemies. I don't know why, maybe I was too young, but it legit took some courage to proceed between the levels. Sounds in that game were brilliant!
I kinda just wisht they'd do the og SAM levels again with better graphics. I don't care much for city/forestscapes in games like this. Give me egypt! Give me tombs 'n caves and stuff.
@@ksuma715 Good point, I don't like that one either, but that's more of a level-thing than a general setting thing imho ;p But these settings in general just look very... well exactly that actually: generic.
I bought the game, and i am waiting one of my friends to buy it and to start rockin it. I played a little bit solo, in my opinion (i played every single pc Serious Sam game) the game is pretty solid. Yes the graphics are not even close to today standarts, but what did you expected after all this is a Serious Sam game and its not meant to have mind blowing graphics. I think the main problem (which they will fix with pathes) are some of the bugs. And you can see a lot of bad reviews, in my opinion this is because a lot of people had high expectations about the graphics, and they were dissapointed.
@@filipbabic4913 I dont "moan" about graphics but the art style, to me its nowehre near to serious sam art style, and with the "newer" graphics it looks horrible
I loved the secrets in the older ones. Also I loved how there were levels where you were running on the celing or inside a rotating tube. That was cool. Levels set in ancient cities were super interesting. I'm not getting the sense this new one has any of this? :(

@@potatotablet727 Yeah you're absolutely right, sad that this game seems to have landed as graceful as a wet fart. Maybe I'll pick it up in a year's time for a fiver.
This was a good honest review. I played for like 2 hours and I like it so far. Is it poorly optimised and with average graphics? Yes. But is it mindless fun? Hell yea!
Grew up playing Serious Sam (more specifically Second Encounter) and even have the logo tattooed on my shoulder (same spot where Sam has it). Bought this as soon as it was available to pre-purchase and I'm excited to play it!

The charm of a Serious Sam game was always that it was visually close to what a AAA studio could do, but on a massive scale and in-your-face gory, comical visuals... In a way, it was superior to super high budget shooters like Doom. SS4 is definitely missing the heart of what it once was and if you say "it's not supposed to be technologically impressive" then you have no idea where the series started and how it got the respect of the PC gaming community. Things all started going down hill w/ SS3, although, aside from Sam himself, the visuals, level design, and masses of enemies were somewhat on par... DOF, HD textures etc... it was close, but this, this is upsetting.
The reason I watch Before You Buy videos after I play the game is just to see how wrong did they get it this time... It's a good game. And they showed you nothing of it in this video. 10 minutes of shotgun. 10/10 would watch a Gameranx video again and laugh.
@@Z4J3B4NT naw, this video makes it seem decent and ignores the fact that it's a big ridden mess even after patching. I've played it also, I have to say it sucks.
@@johnbagley8211 I honestly have no clue what you're talking about. It's a perfectly fine Serious Sam game. I have no idea what else you expected. Had loads of fun, playing a second time to find all secrets... Don't like it? Don't play it.
This review is mostly on point. I didn't quite see the "bland" part when I first finished the game, because in my opinion it looks like Croteam put a lot of effort in improving... everything. Just visually, the game is a big improvement to SS3, but that's not the point here. The focus should be on gameplay as mentioned, and I think it's spot on because SS4 is what is meant to be, even more so with the new Legion system. The carnage, the blood and gore, the heavy weapon kick, silly moments and cheesy one-liners are exactly what define a Serious Sam game, and this one has it all. Sure I would agree that the cutscenes look a bit off, animations are clunky and character models look like resurrected mannequins, but when the focus is on the larger part of the game which is raw action and shooting your way through waves of enemies, you tend to forgive the developers for that part. And the storyline is a harmless add-on to it. We asked for a Serious Sam game and Croteam delivered. It has its flaws but it just came out, so expect to see big patches and updates pretty soon. As for now, if you know what you're looking for in Serious Sam 4, you won't remain disappointed.
@Octobers Lazy Own the red shell tracks the next opponent if you throw it forward or backwards, the blue shell will always aim for 1st place hence why he said "1st comment":).
I just hope CroTeam can do a Doom Eternal for SS5. Change the art style to The First Encounter HD and make the pickups floating like Doom. Also make the story on different planets and dimensions to diversify the boring levels.
Suave Well they can just carry over the assets from 4 and focus on diverse levels and add a few new weapons and enemies without having to pour their resources into expensive cutscenes.
"The dev's approach was: If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Well... but SS3 was heavily broken. I mean, it started as a military shooter, was rejected and it was turned into an SS game and it took many design decisions away that made the previous games so fun. And instead of creating something like FE or SE or even SS2, nope, they go again with this half military shooter approach while using assets from "The Talos Principle". And no, boring levels aren't an SS thing, it's a thing since SS3. As much some people hate SS2, but it had the most interesting levels with extremely visual variety and so many enemy types. You wanted to see what the devs put out of their sleeves next. But here and in SS3, it's just a: "I hope it gets better..."
Serious Sam 3 is a slow burn. It starts off like Doom 2 and finishes like The First Encounter. Not why so many people are salty about it. It's pretty great. Now everyone is going around sucking Serious Sam 2's dick like it's the greatest game ever made, but it's objectively the worst Sam game. It plays like a bad console port and the action is boring.
Stop spreading bullshit, talos uses sam3 assets and not vice versa, and sam 3 feels more like a serious sam game than that crap of sam2. I enjoyed the musics, the design, the gameplay and skillcap of sam 3, especially because it is waaay ahead sam 2.
I've been following this series mainly for nostalgia reasons since playing and loving Serious Sam Demo back in Dec 2000. Serious Sam Fusion in VR with all the previous releases is also great dual wield fun. If SS4 supports VR I'll pick it up too.
I got my cousin to play Serious Sam 3 a few months ago by attaching my laptop to his flat screen tv so we could do split screen coop. I told him it was sort of like call of duty zombies but with aliens, which he used to play religiously repeatedly to wave 25. To show him why I liked the game, we played the final level on “easy”. He got swarmed almost immediately quickly burning through the extra lives as quickly as we were gaining them.
I have waited for years for this game, the Sam series has been one of my favorites for as long as I can remember, it's a series I often revisit. And it really needs a proper ending, so I really hope the storie is semi decent.
Serious Sam is awesome and you really can't complain or hate it....Also every Serious Sam game reminds you of your childhood when times were much simpler and fun and that is so good...
I bought it for full price because I played the previous games so many times. Have not installed it yet though. SS3 especially put a smile on my face when playing, and I coined it my SS3 game face. … Given the mixed reaction, it's good to see gameranx liking it. I find the levels not bland. I have 1080 Ti and graphics settings on ultra. Plenty to look at on Ultra. Although you did say you didn't play that far into SS4. The levels do develop as you go along. There's for sure stuff to look at.
Damn this series is just pure nostalgia for me - SS First Encounter was one of the first games I got on my first PC! I`ll probably wait a bit on this one, but it`s definitely on my wish list :)
Well, that is Gmans opinion. I really enjoy it so far. And this weekend I will play it coop with friends and kids. Something most modern games don't have.
Michel van der Pol I’ve yet to play but I’m intrigued. I know I’m going to like it like I liked SS3. But I might make my first video review of this game and make a pitch for Serious Sam 5.
Here's the problem with PC reviews, no two reviewers are running the exact same hardware/drivers. Meaning both gameranx and gmanlives reviews can be simultaneously right and wrong. Caddicarus very rarely reviews PC games for that reason and he knows his viewers are guaranteed to have the same experience as he does on console. TLDR: Everyone should watch both and realize that depending on their PC stats/drivers they may have to take the results with a grain of salt.
Unfortunately ggmans review is kind of dated at this point, the devs have been pumping the game full of patches that change both enemy placement and fix bugs. Certainly there is still some truth to his review but yea it’s not nearly as buggy anymore.
Been waiting for this for so long. Played each Sam as it came out. Croteam is the master of massive numbers of mobs not affecting framerate. Mental is going down!
Are there "secrets" in this game? What I loved about the first game and its expansion was the secrets that were put throughout the levels and tryharding to locate them all before finishing each level. This made me replay the game and added another challenge to an already hard game on the highest difficulty settings.
I think this game pretty ok game. Yeah, It has it's flaws and not good sides. But I'm really enjoy to play and exploring SS universe more. Because in previous games plot was just some jokes from Sam. But I don't want to hate this game.
It would be cool if there were different perks always available that you earned points to buy temporary upgrades. And kind of like a skill tree they could have perks that require prerequisites. So then through out the battles you could temporarily tweak your abilities to fit the situation.
Get this: Serious Sam 5 should have HUGE levels that are laid out like the Dynasty Warriors games’ stages with hundreds of enemies and missions similar to the musou games but as a first person shooter with enemies reminiscent of enemies from Doom, Quake, and more. A dynasty Warriors-style FPS is just an amazing idea to me.
The best thing about the Serious Sam franchise is that they know what they're trying to accomplish and they stick to that without trying to get too complicated. Sometimes it's nice just to have a mindless game that you just get to blow everything up and enjoy it.
This represents the golden age. Doom. Quake. Turok 1 & 2. Duke Nukem. Games are good these days. But a big fat dual weapon wheel with unlimited ammo, will always be better.
DoomVision I agree. I do not understand the hype around the new dooms. To me it just seemed like one big giant level and didn’t have any variety. However, I did like the tempo of it. Hopefully Microsoft can add some variety to future Dooms.
bravo gameranx, exactly "it is what it is" mindless shooter, which i love...i'm croatian, and like all previous games i will buy this one also (i'll play cracked version, of course, offline and with local saves)....i watched ign review which sucked, they gave 5\10....it's easily 8 or 9\10.....double jump sucks a little (compared to doom eternal) and if they fix that and add bullettime this would be 10\10.....i agree "new generation" should start with serious sam 1 (but not hd version, original one)....all in all awesome game, i played through first 2 levels and it's pretty good...everything i loved in sam 1 is here with modern graphics
I don't agree with this echochamber either. The game is a mess. We still haven't gotten anything that rivals TFE/TSE. SS3 was criticized because it was dull, uninspired and full of filler - but at least it somehow stayed visually better than SS4 ejich has some of the worst lighting I've ever seen. Mishmashing assets is hardly anything to praise.

wait, theres 4 serious sam games?!?! MAN I USED TO LOVE THE ORIGINAL GAME, used to watch my dad play that all of the time and I was so happy when I eventually got to play it, think I did also play the second game, they were really fun
It brings back the memories of when I use to play SS: Second Encounter with my cousins trying to finish out the game as quickly as possible. I so hated those damn bouncing fans, and the tons of awesome secrets, some that are good and some that are just plain suicide! Lol. the tiny scorpions and giant shocking fish. This was one of my favourite games during my childhood along with Starcraft and Need for Speed 5: Porshe.
The thing that made the game awesome was also the scale of those levels and their weirdness. This looks like a Serious Sam CoD mod confined in a tiny space.
@@jukaa1012 Yeaaah, the video says that those huge battles are like two-three tops kinds of events. Old Serious Sam's map scales were a constant. In Serious Sam 1 you could see monster closing up from the horizon like it was a monday.

Weapons and gore feel awesome. The much touted Legion System is a bit of a mis-sell. It's a smoke and mirrors illusion, to give the impression of colossal scale. It's a neat trick but it's hardly a main feature of the game. It's used twice for show.
