Servicing An Old Forklift Battery Pack For Off Grid Solar Home Use

I got a scrap 36 volt forklift battery that I plan to experiment with to see if I can put some of the cells into service for my off grid solar homestead.
I have read that forklift batteries are the ultimate best in solar power use. The problem with them is their weight. This battery weighs 2,000 pounds and it is nearly impossible for a home owner to move something like this around. This is what keeps most off grid solar homes from using forklift batteries.
Price per Amp hour and for the years of service life it seems that you cannot beat a forklift battery. These can last up to 20 years or more. Even tired, used batteries like this one can last up to 20 years in solar power use.
I am hoping to get a couple banks of usable cells from this huge battery. I do expect to find a few dead cells. That is to be expected from an old battery. It was no longer holding enough of a charge to run the forklift so it was scrap to the warehouse owners.
I first opened up all the caps and topped off the water levels with distilled water. Only use distilled water in a battery or you can damage the battery.
Next I wanted to check the voltage of each cell but the lead was dirty and I had to get my cordless drill and a wire brush to clean off all the battery terminals.
Next I checked all the battery cells for voltage. I found that most of the cells were not looking too bad. One was physically broken at the terminal and two more were flat out dead. This is exactly what I expected so I was not surprised at all.
I chose the two 12 volt battery banks that I wanted to save and got out the reciprocating saw.
Part II of my attempt to bring a forklift battery into service for my off grid solar tiny house on wheels is on the way.
Follow my daily progress on the path to self sufficiency on my off grid solar homestead.

Hey man! I am by no means an expert on batteries- I found your video searching for information on these forklift batteries as I came into two of them; With that said, I found on the "Battery University" website that you are supposed to charge them fully before you add distilled water. Not sure how true that is, but Battery University seems like a good resource. Thanks the informative video!
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 3 года назад
I am not sure about that. It depends on how low the water is. Because if you charge a battery that is too low, it can warp the plates and damage them.

@@TheDoItYourselfWorld I know this is an old comment but I work with Forklift batteries and yes fill the battery so its above the plates if it has been sitting for awhile and extremely empty but normally always charged to 90-100% before watering them

Also invest in a good filter if you don't want to have continue getting distilled water. We just use heavily filtered tap water to fill our batteries and I believe the difference is negligible

I served as an officer on a diesel-electrical submarine class Romeo. The battery we used back then was similar to this but just bigger. Varta, made in Germany. 2x departments with 120 cells 2V each. If you properly take care of it will serve you well.

You got my interest were all the batteries in series or were they in stacks so as they could be used all in parallel some way or other? Or maybe 130 volts positive and 130 volts negative.
@SubMariner_
@SubMariner_ 9 лет назад
Sidney Boudro Back there it was 220-240V (common in Europe) so we have two independent groups of batteries that powered the electrical motors under water and were charged when the diesel motor was running (some times even under water while sucking air through a snorkel - air-pipe) The batt. were stored in in different water-tied compartments in case one get damaged the other could be used. Normally they were alternated with each other to power the sub and got charged separately.

Would be nice if you could get the charger for those batts so you could do a Equalized charge on them to burn off the cells. I have to service our Forklift batts every Monday at work. Defiantly not good running them dry. Great Batts to use for sure. That is an old bank. The new ones look a little different. Over time no matter how well you keep the top clean it will still corrode.

Well if you have a tree you can back up to and if you have a come along that will handle a ton and if you had chain to set it up you could lift the battery and drive the truck away then lower the battery. Oh if you do this make sure your come along will lower the battery to a pallet or 2 on the ground. Also try to give up if the tree starts to make noise.

Clean the cases with a battery cleaner. It is possible to lose charge though the casing of the battery if not cleaned properly. Water isn't good enough to clean properly. Get your meter put one lead on the positive post then put the other on the case. All around the top! If you get any type of reading clean the case again.
@SidneyBoud
@SidneyBoud 9 лет назад
All true but try and remember that this leakage is always going to be with you. I don't believe he can get the cells out of the battery case but I believe that is what he intends to do. If he does the leakage path will be much longer.

Sure power is made by the Douglas battery company. That looks like a 18-85-17 model battery. The original amp/hr rating would have been 680. You can charge the cells in banks of 6 with an automotive charger but it will take a long time. The output is very low compared to an industrial charger. Once the cells are fully charged you can do a cell to cell voltage check. A fully charged and cooled cell should have a voltage of 2.12 volts per cell. Note that the positive posts are much higher than the negative posts. The intercell connectors angle up to the positive posts. This is caused by positive plate growth over time. It is a normal function of battery life and is a sign that the battery is at the end of its life. The red floating bushing around the post is designed to move up with the plates as they swell and lift up. I think you might find that battery has very few usable cells and has been used up. I wish you luck and hope you can get 6 decent cells to make a 12 volt battery. Good luck on your adventure!

@McCuneWindandSolar 9 лет назад
The Do It Yourself World I love to get my hands one a few of these my self. as I can tell you only had a hand full of them that were bad. I know 2.04 is pretty low but it is 60%charge for a 2 volt cell. the ones that are below 1 volt I just toss those not much for saving. they are pretty much fried. I now I counted and you have plenty for 2 12 volt strings. I would be guessing but I think that is a 1000AH battery if so with 2 12 volt strings you will have 2,000 AH battery bank. what I would do if I was you is wright Good for any battery over 2 volts and bad for anything under 1.5 cut the buss's and pull them out me I would just find a place I know I will be keeping them or find another camper trailer to put them one and build a battery box for them on a trailer behind the home one wells so if you have to move you can just tow it with you. that way you can just put the good ones back in the steal case rebridge the bus bars and put it on a wagon all depending on how you are setting it up but me it would be permanent you are wanting stuff ready if case you need to pack up and move and every thing is ready to just hook and book. but if you want to put post on those termanals I go with something with a hole in it that is tented copper with a lug on top so you can drill the buss bar put the nut and bold in and hit it with a torch and solder the entire lug to the post so it becomes as one piece. then you can reconect them with thick heavy gauge wire I would go with 00 gauge battery or welding wire that way they will handle heavy currents and also I would fuzz each battery bank. I cant wait to see the battery's in operation. Good on you though for finding such a good deal, those things can run up to over a grand even used.
@SidneyBoud
@SidneyBoud 9 лет назад
McCuneWindandSolar I believe he has more then he had but those batteries have seen there life. I doubt if they have 2000 amp hours left. What is critical is how fast do they leak back to no charge. If he has 2 or 3 cells that seem good how will he keep those charged so as he has them when another cell goes bad. But he is a lot better off then before when he figures out how to get that out of his truck.

You took readings from 17 of the 18 cells, you didn’t measure the one with a broken terminal. I added up all the readings you gave and the total for 17 cells adds up to 30.68, that’s close to the combined reading of 30.9 for the 17cells. You have 15 usable cells, which are currently at a 35% state of charge. The next thing I would do is measure each cell’s gravity with a temperature compensating Hydrometer. Keep a record of all the readings you take. As they sit, I would choose the first six cells starting at the positive terminal to make the 1st 12 volt battery and then I would choose the last six cells nearest to the negative terminal to make the 2nd 12 volt battery. After charging the 12 volt batteries and removing the surface charge, I would take measurements all over again. Are all the cells giving a similar reading? What’s the variance between the high reading and low reading? You mentioned that you like individual cells because you can replace an individual cell of an old battery if one goes bad. Mixing new cells with old cells (over 50 charge cycles) is strongly discouraged. You suspect your 6 Volt batteries are sulfated, but you haven’t tested with a hydrometer yet? If they are sulfated, I bet the reason for them to be in that state is due to undercharging. You deplete the battery bank down to 50% one evening and you only charge the battery bank up to 85% the next day.

I think you are missing something about my NEW golf cart batteries. Maybe I have not been clear enough. They were not performing right off the shelf of the store. They sat too long on the shelf. I have been using my HF generator and battery charger literally every single day since I brought them home. Often mornings and evenings. Now this is supposed to be a 216 Ah battery bank but it goes dead overnight with only my modem and netbook running. Netbook display is turned off. Its an atom processor and runs 9 hours on its own battery. I am maybe pulling 10 watts max overnight per hour.

Two of the forklift battery cells are flat out dead and one is broken. There is no point in testing a battery where the positive terminal pulls right out of the battery. I have 15 good cells. I will get a hydrometer and properly test the cells.
@SidneyBoud
@SidneyBoud 9 лет назад

One more thing. The battery has to be at full charge to measure the acid with a hydrometer if you are going to add acid. The acid goes into the plates as the battery discharges. When you speak of sulfated plates you are talking about where the acid is going normally.

Sam Roberts I suspect he deletes spam comments. If it is the same copy and paste wind turbine comment that was posted in the last dozen videos, I don't blame him for deleting it. If you have a comment or question about it just ask your own instead of replying to a missing comment. I am sure it will be OK.

I am not sure what you are talking about. I do delete the filth from the trolls. If its a normal person with an opinion fine but trolls (and I know who they are because they attack every day) get deleted. So I am not sure what you say. YT is glitchy as well and often moves or loses comments.

looks like you need to lift the cells from the hole... NOT by the terminals it will break off.... be careful lol eat your wheaties :)

Yes this is the one I saw. But I just talked to the pros on the phone and they say lift it by the negative terminal with a special clamp.

The Do It Yourself World Since they are not coming out easy due to corroded and what ever. Maybe pulling from the post would not be the right idea and pulling from the fill hole would be better. atleast you know the plastic is stronger and can see if it starts to flex the post will break without warning I think

The Do It Yourself World what truck do you use?
@SidneyBoud
@SidneyBoud 9 лет назад
We had 1800 amp hour cells and while carrying one we had to lift it over a 10 inch pipe. The case separated from the lead and case and acid dropped to the floor, The case cracked and began to leak acid. If you can avoid taking them out of the case that is what I would do as I fear they are stuck in the case. Good Luck what ever is decided. If you must pull some cells pull the ones that are bad first then maybe you can get something under the good cells.

Why distilled water? NAPA carry's battery acid all you did was dilute the battery
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 8 лет назад
+Roy youdontneedtono Never add battery acid to a battery. Only distilled water. If you add acid then you upset the chemistry of the battery. The water is what boils out, not the acid.

do u know or think desulfaters work
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 8 лет назад
+Michael Galac I have used the Bedini Motor to desulfate many batteries through the years with much success. Commercial desulfators, I think they work but I do not have enough experience with them yet to say for sure. They are a bit small and slow so lets see.

The Do It Yourself World just me thinking out loud here .... what if u use a tazer to pulse the battery they do what like 30 million volts ... or something similar in specs im with ssanf and techman1219 dont think the bedini would fit the job would take forever to do its magic
@SidneyBoud
@SidneyBoud 9 лет назад
james Robertson They used to use 20,000 volts ( 20 thousand volts) DC on picture tubes second anode and that would throw a spark nearly an inch how many inches does 20 million volts throw a spark? I know you are just thinking but you are off a decimal point or so.

Sherry Comar Some people have turned off the reply feature for their own comments but a grey link that says "reply" should be under the comments on the left hand side for most comments assuming you are looking at the comments on RU-vid. If it is not there, I don't know what else to tell you except to maybe check your own settings.
