60 Minutes+ correspondent Seth Doane reports on how drugs like Xanax have upended the lives of some young Americans. Xanax, one of several anti-anxiety drugs, known as benzos can be addictive and withdrawing from them can be grueling. In 2020, 91 million prescriptions were written for benzos, but their makers say they have helped millions and can be safe and effective.
Each weekday morning, "CBS This Morning" co-hosts Gayle King, Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil deliver two hours of original reporting, breaking news and top-level newsmaker interviews in an engaging and informative format that challenges the norm in network morning news programs.

Anxiety, Panic, and Depression are all a continuum linked to Hypoxia. Low oxygen can be from physical restriction (including emphysema or asthma) to physiology like bad ratio between lactate and pyruvate. It is apparent that the world is experiencing frank Beriberi but the alternative world is covering it up by calling it B-1 deficiency. I'm not a doctor so I can't give medical advice but I would try: thiamine pyrophosphate = diphosphate = cocarboxalase (all the same thing with different names) that is the ACTIVE form of B1. There are other causes and interventions but that is the best place to start.

What's the point of running a story If the headline reads "epidemic of addiction"? It's blaming the patient while bad docs go scott free. It should read "epidemic of dependency" , the difference couldn't be more massive.

@Chris P Bacon there is GABA (aminoacid) and passiflora both in supplements that work the same way as benzodiazepines but without the risk of addiction. You can take higher doses than usually recommended and accompany with complex B 50 and magnesium. I was taking benzodiazepines for 3 months and i guess you know the way you have to quit them is very very slowly. You can do one quarter of the pill less every month and instead you can complete it with the supplements I mentioned above. These drugs are one big scam. They don't heal anything, work for 3 weeks and then you have to increase the dose in order to obtain the same effects.

To get off benzos: dissolve tabs in milk, then reduce the amount of milk by a tiny amount each day. One year per milligram. I went off a longterm 2 mg per day prescription in 13 1/2 months of tapering this way and it was actually a little too fast and I ended up in the ER at the end of the process. In 60 years I have never done anything more difficult than getting off of Klonopin by tapering this way. If you try to stop benzos suddenly you will very likely go insane and suffer terribly. But if you taper slowly and gradually by dissolving the drug in milk, you can do it, and become free of this incredibly addictive drug. Whether you are hooked on Xanax or Klonopin, use this method to free yourself. Getting off benzos 13 years ago was the hardest thing I ever did in my life and also the best thing I ever did with my life.

It took me 2.5 years to taper valium and it was horrible. Benzo's are considered the hardest drug to come off of because the withdrawals are sooooo bad and last for long... and most people don't get addicted. Most become dependent but you have no cravings for it and once off you never want to take it again. And a lot of people get injured coming off benzos because the doctors have no idea how to get people off of these. They don't know how to get people off a lot of drugs and then rapid taper them. People lose their relationships, jobs, homes and lives going through benzo withdrawals. If people knew, few would take them and then where would the manufacturer's make their money.

True. The antidepressants do change brain chemistry. Physically the brain become dependent on them. The term addiction is not really appropriate. That means people crave the drug. The psychiatric drugs are not craved. The drugs cause changes to the brain cells. The patient then becomes dependent on them. Psychiatry has been lying for years about their drugs. They lie, because they do not want to lose any business. They are in it for profit and having patients, long term. Psychiatry is profit motivated. That is their priority. Elleanoire, what are your medical qualifications to make these very definite (and definitely incorrect) statements about benzos and SSRIs? Benzos taken at low doses as directed create a dependency in as little as a month because it literally re-wires the human brain, anyone’s brain. No predisposition required. Same (although less severely) with SSRIs; there is a Wikipedia entry for “antidepressant discontinuation syndrome” because it is real and does not depend on being addiction prone. You are spouting dangerous nonsense.

Im gonna be controversial here and say people with panic disorder, anxiety, and insomnia should avoid these drugs like the plague. I suffered from lifelong anxiety and sleep problems and my experience was the pills work so well theres no way to stop taking them very quickly. Yes, but in cases where someone has already been prescribed for years, there should be a caveat that allows them to decide whether or not staying onto it is worth the withdrawal. Since tapering off of it seven months ago, my anxiety has spiked to the point where I feel suicidal nearly daily. I have trouble working, concentrating, and have been losing hair. None of my self-care strategies work when I get into hours-long panic attacks. Breathing exercises, mindfulnesses, nothing. I don't think it's worth losing my life over withdrawal.

@@mayarosenberg1813 ohh my sorry to hear you are going through it as well. I do believe anyone thats dependent should definitely be worked with differently than the benzo naive - its a new medical condition and one we were never meant to have. Many people have to resort to illegal purchase of scripts bc doctors have been lied to by big pharma about these drugs! I had to taper using legal analogues and i STILL needed medical supervision to detox. If i can offer you some encouragement, i do feel “sick” in a different way but ALL my mental health symptoms drastically reduced once the rebound from the final dose was over! And yes i felt like i was losing my mind at times but it really wasnt that bad with the help of meds. And that was after 7 years on them! I get gagging and nausea. I have been having gagging and and retching and I believe from withdrawal but my psychiatrist and other support such as family refuses to believe my retching and dry heaving is a withdrawal symptom. My insurance doesn't cover treatment centers since I am on medicare and medi-cal. also my help comes from regional center RCEB due to a disability. I had to get my doctor to get me off Xanax. Because it works when you take it I would end up taking too much. And I genuinely don't want to feel that way. I've been using klopin since then. I hope I can get off of it one day but it's actually helped and I take it as you're supposed to take it.

People like this is why i can't even get one prescription. Even though i desperately need it because of panic and anxiety issue. My doctor before i have the one i do now was so cautious would only prescribe me an SSRI and only SSRI's. Didn't work and i was unable to function, That was ok, with her because she had no liability and me suffering was fine. Just wanted to keep switching SSRI's that was doing even more damage. So i got a new doctor and said he won't prescribe me this because he said it's addictive even though i'm trying to live a normal life. He also said , If i don't like it to find another doctor. I feel sorry for her for the way she feels because i know the feeling, On the other side of that coin, Because she allowed herself to get addicted. People like me get punished because of people like her. Her problem then becomes mine. Her and the other people who claim they are addicted. At least your doctor cares and gave you the tools to feel better. take my doctors who only look out for themselves and don't give you the tools to function just so they feel no liability whats so ever. These doctors who ignore patients should be held accountable !

@Elleanoire Sure. Everyone has some anxiety from time to time, but that's quite different than having anxiety to the point that it is causing you continuous severe distress, health issues, and even disability. For these individuals, it will take more than "non addictive medications", which I'm curious to what these elusive medications are? Anxiety is treated multidimensional, spanning many areas such as coping skills, process trauma, health, diet, thoughts, self esteem, self efficacy, current life situation, etc. Medications, for some, may be a piece of it. You then say, "so you can stop scaring people?" Who and what are you referring to here?

Also to add when a kid takes a heavy dose of medication when they're younger it is hard for them to come off it when they're older from what I read and what I dealt with myself. BUT to have the issue for over a year is this crazy. And to say you are addicted to that medication is also ridiculous
