Gonna be great to have all of this lumber storage! If I can ever get this Mill shed done, I'll be starting on lumber storage next! Nice work, Brock!

I always set my post with crushed rock in the bottom and tamp them to hold them, then add concrete if I decide they need to have concrete to hold them. Then top them off with crushed rock and tamp them again. I have found that crushed rock keeps the post from wanting to rot at the ground due to the rock allowing the water to get away from the post instead of holding the water.

When dropping posts into a hole I use a 'sliding board' to keep the bottom end of the post from scraping against the far side of the hole. It's just a board less than the hole diameter in width and sticks above the ground enough to stop the post from sliding past the hole while lifting.

Brock, I'm glad you left the cresesote sides! I like the rustic look and it will give you additional protection. I like to premix my concrete for building posts. I use a wheelbarrow and can mix 1 bag at a time. Sometimes I use my tractor bucket too

Glad to see your progress. I did hate to see you do a dry pour though. All the research I’ve seen on doing dry pours even though the manufacturer says it’s okay, shows the breaking strength of the concrete is greatly reduced over mixing and then pouring.

Good afternoon Brock. I watched the video this morning but my #2 grandson and his wife are here for a few days from Arizona so I had to wait till now to comment. Here In our area of N.C. Pennsylvania when we set posts most everyone that I know including myself will just dump a bag of Sakrete in the hole, level it out, set the post, level it, fill and tamp dirt around it. Then it "ain't going nowhere." I've done this for years and it works great. The concrete will draw moisture from the ground and set up. It also seals the post from drawing water up through the post and rotting it out. I've pulled a couple of posts out of the ground that I had put in 15 years earlier and they looked like they were put in the week before. These were treated posts that I'm talking about. And once the dirt settles it will hold the post horizontally as well as the concrete. You never see a farmer cementing fence posts in. Just an old man's opinion. I wish that I could be there to help you with your build. God bless and have a wonderful day. 👍👍🙂

Ive made a few sheds over the years. Probably make a few more now that the maximum of 200 square feet has been raised to 400 with no permits for general storage structures. In the county. I use 1x3s-ish for post bracing. And brace each post individually. We have are own supplie of lumber . We generally cut a log 4 to 8" over the needed length as when cut out on the place, a log is not necessary perfectly square or has no pulled wood on the end. . Where as at a store, your getting a finished product, ready for the consumer.

I'm in the process of sawing up lumber for a wood drying shed, so this video is coming at a perfect time. This is really helpful because you talk and explain your reasons for doing what you are doing. Anything I can do to keep my mistakes to a minimum is worth the time. Thanks for all the videos you share. Knowledge and entertainment. I love them.

I feel better about the four post lean to I built, did the posts basically the same! I did put a couple inches of dry concrete under each pole though. And with wood, good enough is better than good enough. Hate wood! 😂

You need string plumb lines to correctly align all your posts and bring them into conformity !
@jimmerrithew453
@jimmerrithew453 9 дней назад
Hi Brock. At Home Depot, you can buy post-levelling brackets. They are a right angle bracket with bubble levels on each side. They strap to the post so you can plumb the post in 2 directions easily.

We dump bag in hole dry, then put post in on top of it. The way you did it is made a slip able "washer" around the pole instead of the pole sitting on top of the cement "footing".

Dry poor concrete sort of works, but it’s like 20% of the strength. Concrete cures and that’s when it gets hard, if you just put the dry pour in the ground, it will slowly absorb water and cure at different times and be kind of brittle and fall apart easily. If you dug two exact same holes and did a dry port and then mixed it and did it pour and then pull them out a couple months later and take a hammer to them, the dryer will fall apart a lot easier. It’s not a big deal for stuff like that are gonna stay in the ground and not move a lot, but for a walkway or curb or something that’s going to get some use and not have complete support around it, a poor is always a way better choice. It’s a little more work, but the quality of your concrete in the end is much better.

The fast set concrete sets up the same time as the regular bags. According to the instructions on the bags. It cost more. I like your idea of tying each one together as you go

How did you treat your posts? I am doing a similar project with rough cut lumber
@JCWren
@JCWren 8 дней назад
Seems everyone has an opinion on how posts should be set. Diameter of the hole vs the post size. Direct burial or set them on footings (Hometown Acres), rock in the bottom of the hole before you set the post. Or use concrete instead of rock. Soak the in-ground portion of the post in used motor oil or not. Use Flex Seal or not. Use the heatshrink tubing around post base (April Wilkerson) or not. Use string lines to square. Or use brackets with levels. Or boards. Dry pour or wet pour the concrete. Leave space for rock at the top or not. Paint it JD green or Kubota orange or TYM red or not. No matter how you do it, someone's going to tell you you're doing it wrong.

I am watching your how to level a pole in the ground, I see 1 mistake you made. You put the oak 6 x 6 in the hole without either gravel or concrete. In the 1960s my uncle told and showed me that you never let the post touch the ground, you have to have something to keep the post from touching the ground . That was in 1967, or 1968 he built a dog lot, with untreated posts. The dog lot is still in use, the posts are just as solid as they were in 1967/1968. Just Saying.

back fill the hole with 3/4'' stone = drainage and NO rot, university study says so. concrete holds water. That barn won't be square, frighting build practise. SORRY BROCK , I really like your channel but this is a great example of how not to build a post frame. PS I made my living building post frame, biggest barn we built was 82' by 200'

I know it’s hard for a professional to let go of what they do for a living, but I’m going to spend less than $300 on this entire build and it will work perfectly for me. I don’t have a customer that I have to please, I don’t have a building code to meet, and it’s not going to fall down. One of the ideas I live my life by is that most of the time good enough is good enough and a ton of energy is wasted on perfection
