Hi Roy- I wached both videos you did on this and what would be helpful to many of us, is step by step instructions. Yes, you tell us that it can be done, and you have everything plugged in and powered on. But to start from the very beginning and walk us through each step for connecting everything, would be what some of us need.

Keep in mind USB C needs power delivery and display port 1.4 to be able to do this. Not all USB-C are made equal. Get a USB C Thunderbolt 4 laptop. Thunderbolt 4 has all the high end USB C stuff required to meet TB4 standards.

Just came across this, I am having problems where when I add the DP cable it disconnects one of my screens connected to the HDMI below the DP port. How can I fix this ?

Could be lots of reasons for this, mostly having to do with the actual equipment you have. First, dock has to be 3-monitor capable with at least 90w power. Second, laptop should have a decent GPU even if it is onboard. Third, monitors shouldn't be 2K, 4K or TV's. 1080p usually works great. Hope this helps.

Great setup! I'm trying to achieve the same 3 external monitor and 1 internal display for my home office, but I just can't get it to work. I have the same Lenovo dock (40AY) connected to a Lenovo T480s laptop (intel i7 vPro 8th gen) although I've paired this setup with 3 six year old Dell monitors. I was able to get 2 out of the 3 monitors turned on with a direct display port connection to the dock. However, the last monitor does not have an hdmi out port so I tried a display to hdmi adapter and still had no success there. The only ideas left I have are 1) I should replace the type C cable (laptop to dock) with a thunderbolt 3 cable. (tried one, but for some reason it didn't manage to connect the laptop to the dock at all.) 2) The laptop is slightly underpowered for this setup. (Don't think so, but maybe for 3 monitors it is.) 3) And finally, the monitors themselves need to be replaced with something newer. Sorry to drop so much information here, but if anybody has an idea of what could be at fault here I would certainly appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

I’m having this same issues. I know all the monitors work because I connected to my personal laptop and it’s all fine. I bought an adapter for HDMI to USB C to connect to the dock as well as HDMI to display port and neither work. I’m not sure what else to try to get the 3 monitors to work

Dock might not be able to handle power of all monitors plus the laptop.

@@rolandparkerImpressComputers I have the same dock and a Thinkpad X1 Yoga and I am unable to connect 3 external monitors. One of my monitors is a Acer and I had to use an adapter to connect VGI to HDMI but as soon as I connect, only 2 of my monitors connect.

Agreed. I have a Thinkpad X1 Yoga and the same dock and I am unable to get all 3 external monitors to work together. I am running Win 11 (not sure that it matters through). I am using a VGI- HDMI adapter for one of my monitors. Any advice would be awesome. I love having my laptop and 2 external monitors but adding an extra one would be so helpful for the work I do.

The IdeaPad is a home version of the original ThinkPad and some models are not as strong in their specifications. Try the dock. You should be able to get at least 2 external displays working.

I have two monitors on a docking station now. My laptop actually clips into the station and locks in. The dock can only do two monitors now. How can I add a third without having to buy another dock? this is awesome content. Thank you!

You would need to replace your dock to one that supports 3 monitors. Alternatively you could try and use a usb to hdmi/dvi adapter to add the 3rd monitor like this www.impresscomputers.com/product/usb-3-0-to-hdmi-external-video-adapter/

Hi Roy. Great videos. I have a very frustrating situation I hope you can help with. I have 2 identical Asus TUF VG289Q external monitors. I also have a brand new Lenovo P16 Gen 2 laptop and the Thunderbolt 4 dock. The monitors have 2 HDMI ports each and 1 DisplayPort each, while the dock, unfortunately, has 2 display ports and 1 HDMI port. If I try using the DisplayPort cables, it seems that no matter what I do, I can only get one external monitor to work properly (3840 x 2160 HDR), with the second either not displaying at all or ridiculously low, unchangeable resolution. If I try to use one DisplayPort cable and one HDMI cable, it is slightly better for the second monitor, but I still can’t get the resolution above 1920 x 1080. The only way to get the max resolution on both external monitors is by utilizing one HDMI port in the docking station and another in the laptop itself. But that sort of defeats the purpose of having the docking station. These are two high end monitors and a very high end laptop. Is there something you can suggest? Many thx Howard

Hi - This is exactly what I would like to do. I have 3 Acer K242HL monitors all able to run 1920x1080 at 60Hz. My laptop is a Lenovo Thinkpad x280 with 16GiB Ram Intel Core i5-8350u and the dock is the same Lenovo 40AY usb-c dock as in the video. Like the other posters I can only get 2 of the 3 monitors working at any one time. Any ideas?

Could be the GPU. Ultrabooks commonly dumb-down some specs to avoid heat since cooling paths are more restrictive. Also even the 12.5" displays can run at UHD resolutions which puts a lot of burden on the GPU. Your model: Graphics Intel HD Graphics 620 or Intel UHD Graphics 620 in processor; supports external digital monitor via HDMI or USB Type-C; supports up to three independent displays; Max resolution: 4096x2304@60Hz (USB Type-C); 4096x2160@30Hz (HDMI) Try turning off internal display or running it at a lower resolution. Hope this helps.

We have never tried that and I am not sure if the dock would work with an AiO. Lenovo also said that it was not designed for the AiO. If you want to order one and try I would do that as long as you can return it if it doesn't work

My Lenovo ThinkPad Universal USB-C Smart Dock (40B2) (connected to a ThnkPad x13 Gen 4 laptop with the onboard panel disabled) will drive two 4K monitors at 60 Hz but the 3rd 4K monitor will only reach 30 Hz. I have looked at the Lenovo documentation and that's a published spec for the unit, so there's no problem with the dock. The x13 has two Thunderbolt 4 ports (also work like USB-C). One of these is used to connect to the docking station. The other is available. My question is: If I used a Thunderbolt 4-to-DisplayPort connector, could I drive two monitors from the docking station and a third directly from the laptop to reach 60 Hz on all three monitors? I would be curious to hear if anyone has had any experience with this. Thanks.

What are the specs of that ThinkBook? After watching this video I went and bought that docking station to use with my T490 Thinkpad and it still only recognizes 2 external displays and the notebook screen. Trying to get 3 external running (2 via HDMI and 1 via Displayport). Any software being used or settings to apply to recognize the 3rd external? Thanks.

I'm trying this exact same thing with my T490. I can get a 3rd monitor to show up after resetting the laptop but its stuck in 480 resolution while the other 2 are 1080. I wonder if a firmware update could help?

The monitors we used were 1080p and I am not sure if it work with 1440 as Lenovo was a bit vague and we have only tested it with the 1920x1080 resolution monitors "One HDMI and two DisplayPort outputs accommodate up to three displays as well as a single 4K monitor at 60 Hz or dual 4K monitors at 30 Hz." www.impresscomputers.com/product/lenovo-thinkpad-universal-usb-c-dock-hdmi-dp-90w-40ay0095us/

This could be a limitation of the laptop itself. You may need to upgrade the laptop to get this to work.
