Setting Up a Bin Cage for my New Hamster

I wasn't planning on adopting a new hamster, but she was up for adoption and she lived in a small cage. It broke my heart so I adopted her. I named this sweetheart Saartje. I have no idea how old she is, all I know is that she's super active and that she loooves digging :)
She lives in a bin cage, the size is 76x57x42 cm / I think about 30 x 22 x 16 inches. For the lid I'm using a wire top of an old cage.
Some extra information:
Wheel size: 28cm / 11 inches
Bedding: Plospan (undusted wood shavings) and hemp bedding, the highest point is about 30cm / 12 inches.
Dried plants / dried flowers: white dari, feather millet, delicha grass, linseeds, canary seed plant and marigold.

Adorable hamster and awesome bin set up!!! One suggestion, if I may, best to use sand instead of Chinchilla powder. Powder/dust is too fine and can cause respiratory issues. Awesome job, that is one lucky little hamster 🐹 💕
@supremehammy
@supremehammy 2 года назад
The ones they sell here in the Netherlands are safe to use. Here they actually recommend using chinchilla sand instead of any other type of sand. Here they say that other types of sand is too coarse and therefore cause skin irritation. But thank you for sharing your concern, I appreciate it 😊

@@supremehammy Ok, good to know. I think I have heard in different regions Chinchilla sand is different than what is available here in the the States. 😁

Hey I wouldn't recommend using chinchilla bath powder as it can be dusty and cause respatory problems retile sand will work great
@ronclark9724
@ronclark9724 2 года назад
European chinchilla sand isn't produced the same as American chinchilla sand, and is recommended in Europe. But in America reptile sand is preferred and chinchilla sand should be avoided. Things are not the same worldwide...

I actually don't know. I've read that the ones you find in nature can contain wax which can be toxic to animals. The ones you can buy in pet shops are free of this wax. Not sure how they do that tho..

@supremehammy
@supremehammy 2 года назад
You can also make a cage made from ikea furniture or hamster safe wood, it doesn't have to cost much. You can also add more space to dig in your current cage by adding plexiglass to the sides of the cage, a hamster needs a lot of floorspace so if your cage is big enough, this can be a great option.

I have seen hamsters climb the glass of a aquarium in the corners. Their paws must have Spiderman qualities. Hamsters require lids with proper air ventilation just to keep them safe in their enclosure. How often do you change the bedding on a bin enclosure like this?
@ronclark9724
@ronclark9724 2 года назад
'Depends where the darling hamster pees. if the darling decides to use the sand bath that you shift and clean daily, the bedding may last half a year, maybe longer for a deep cleaning. I also clean the wheel daily as mine pees there too, which means I spot clean the bedding under the wheel weekly. If the darling chooses to pee in a corner, the corner bedding gets a weekly clean. I don't worry so much about the poop as it doesn't smell like the pee. But when I do a deep clean, I scoop up as much poop as possible, but leave half of the bedding behind. A hamster is less stressed of their scent in the bedding, so reuse a third of it after a deep clean... On the other hand if you have a tiny toy pet store cage with practically no bedding, you will have to deep clean weekly to control the smell of ammonia, the pee... More bedding makes a huge difference... You really don't save the costs of bedding using a little at a time, better to use a lot at a time so it lasts longer...
@supremehammy
@supremehammy 2 года назад
I only spot clean the cage, just like Ron described. But Saartje has a secret toilet haha, I can't find her pee or poop spot so I just leave it the way it is. Sometimes she digs up the dirty bedding and I can throw it away but I'm never gonna mess up the setup and her tunnelsystem just for spot cleaning. Usually hamsters are clean animals that hate a dirty nest so.. But whenever its time to change the setup, I'll search for her toilet area. But most of the time she cleans her tunnelsystems by digging up the pee and poop. And whenever a hamster dies, got very sick, has parisites or when the bedding is just super dirty, I will change all of the bedding. But if not, than I'm not gonna change it because you will remove all of their scent and that will cause unnecessary stress.

The one I use is actually a bit soft, there are no sharp edges. Most of the bedding they sell in the Netherlands are safe to use, but not all of them so thanks for sharing this, I will keep this in mind if I want/need to switch between brands.

The ones in the Netherlands are completely fine to use. They actually say that sand is to rough for their skin and fur.. I guess it depends on which country you get your sand/dust from.
