Setting up a hardware studio : a basic guide

I've been getting a few questions regarding setting up a hardware studio from people I assume are changing from computer based systems. I though I'd do a quick and basic guide to setting up a small hardware studio. At the end I show how I go about making a two bar loop. Obviously there are many different ways to integrate hardware in the studio and this is just one example based around using an MPC 2000 as the hub. I hope some people it might find this useful.
Sequencing - Akai MPC 2000
Synths - Waldorf Blofeld, Meeblip
Drums - MFB522
Mixer - Allen and Heath Zed 24
Effects - Electro Harmonix Memory Man with Hazarai
The music used is original material by Reedale Rise

Great video!! You explained it simply and easily. Thanks for sharing! Quick question for you , if you can give me some guidance, I'd greatly appreciate it. I want to connect my MPC 2000, Korg keyboard & my DJ Setup all together with the least amount of additional gear. Could I just hook all this equipment up to a similar mixer like the Allen and Heath Zed 14 and run it through protools?
@reedalerise
@reedalerise 8 лет назад
Hi. Depends what you want to do. If you attach all your gear to a mixer it will give you one stereo output that could go into protools. If you want to record each of the mpc, korg, dj individually you might want to consider a multi input audio interface.

Hey! thanks! Very cool sound :) I was looking for a clear video in french about harware studio/setup but this one is the most explicative aha. I've some questions: If i understand you can perform live with your hardware setup, you don't need a laptop? And how do you record if you wanna produce? Does the MPC have their own sound or did you make it with a progam like reason, ableton, fl studio or whatever?
@reedalerise
@reedalerise 4 года назад
Hey. Yes, some people don't use a laptop to perform. There's loads of great videos on youtube with all sorts of 'no laptop' setups. Have a look at some of my older videos. Most people would just record the stereo output of their hardware onto a laptop, audio recorder or cassette tape. MPC is a sampler, so it will record sounds from wherever you want (stereo, vinyl, TV etc) and play them back. They often get used like a drum machine with different drum sounds on each of the different pads. MPC can also send midi messages to synths so that they make a melody.
@sunlyn7987
@sunlyn7987 4 года назад
@@reedalerise Thank you for the very quick answer :) It's more clear for me now. Some people told me it's better to learn to compose with an program before play with hardware cause it's more difficult and also to much expensive then you have less possibility. What do you think and how did you learn? Personally i compose since 4 year in ableton but i don't want work on laptop anymore. Yep i'll check all you video :)
@reedalerise

@@sunlyn7987 There is no right way to learn really. I played with my computer for many years but I only started getting better at production when I used hardware. I found hardware more fun. Everybody is different though, so do what feels best for you and what you can afford

@Reedale Rise thank you for this video! This clarified many things for sure! :) Question! Let's say that a hardware stereo compressor unit would be added to this setup in order to achieve the pumping kick sound associated with French house genre. Where would place it in the signal chain? I bet that there are many options for this, right? Curious to hear your or any others thoughts, thanks! :)
@reedalerise
@reedalerise 3 года назад
For the French house sound you'd want to sidechain the kick to the musical elements. Not so easy on this particular mixer as it doesn't have busses where you could group all the musical elements together. Easy to do in a daw
@markopinola5069
@markopinola5069 3 года назад
@@reedalerise Oh yeah, forgot the sidechain-trick! Is the main idea with the beforementioned technique add the comp for example to bass track, but take comps input signal from the kick track?

@@markopinola5069 Yeah, you got it. For the French sound apply strong compression to all the musical elements til they pump. Alesis 3060 is the classic cheap compressor for this sound

Hi. Super nice Video! One more question;) when you record your jam to the Pc, how do you manage to record the individual channels? Do you record track by track? Are you muting all the tracks excerpt the track you want to record? I own a zed14 with the same layout and routing possibilities as the zed24. I used to use the alt out connected to the interface and when i wanted to record a track, i pushed the pfl button. The pfl was set up in the monitor section. The only problem with this method was, the pfl sent the signal just in mono to the alt out. Another method is, when you use the aux 1 and 2 to record separate tracks...but its not very comfortable, because you have to rotate the pontentiometers all the time...carpal tunnel syndrome.... So i'am curious about your recording style. Any secrets or tips and tricks?:) thx
@reedalerise
@reedalerise 8 лет назад
Hi, thanks. I haven't used this mixer for a while but I think I recorded from the alt out and it outputted the stereo master - not sure what settings I used to get this. I now use a multi input audio interface (Focusrite 18i20) and no hardware mixer as it allows me to record individual tracks

Hey man nice set up !!!! hope you can help me some…. I have an XL and a yamaha dx7. How could i connect it to the mpc to try some melodies during the mpc is looping and rec whenever i want as you did on the video but with the midi controller. Sorry to bother, i think with the dx7 it could be a nice combination and i'm little bit lost. @reedalerise
@reedalerise 8 лет назад
+tasss550 MPC 1000 can do this as it has an 'audio thru' function where whatever is plugged into the input can be heard at all times. The MPC 2000 doesn't have this, so I assume the 2000XL is the same. Do you have a DJ mixer? You could maybe run the DX7 through a line input on that and the MPC on another channel. Otherwise a small cheap mixer will do it or a computer audio interface with multiple inputs if you wanna go that route

@reedalerise
@reedalerise 8 лет назад
tasss550 Same. You'd have to play something by hand to record it into the MPC. The MPC 2000xl can't play a midi sequence and record audio at the same time. Or you could for example, record audio from the Blofeld into the MPC and then pitch that sample across the pads. You have to get creative!
@matiasss550

just hook em up with midi, you don't need to record the audio. dx7 midi out -> mpc midi in, mpc midi out -> dx7 midi in. set the midi channel on a track to the same channel as the dx7, done. record your stuff and when you play it back the dx7 triggers it again.

@reedalerise
@reedalerise 9 лет назад
Jair Alonso Rondon Thanks. Yes, MPC1000 can do this too - I have one. MPC1000 has a lot more features than the 2000s as it's the newer model, espcially if you upgrade to the JJOS operating system. The 2000s are pretty basic, but what they do, they do well. The 2000s also add some flavour to the samples from the digital to analogue converters - kind of thick and punchy, which is good for drums but a bit muddy for everything else. 1000 is more clean/modern sounding.
@joshuawillis9957
@joshuawillis9957 7 лет назад
I agree, MPC 2000Xl sounds more full for drums/mid-low end but MPC 1000 has the highs however sounds a bit flat by default if you ask me (you can EQ, COMP, and filter via the 1000 for fatter sound though).

An audio interface with a few more audio inputs and midi in/out would be useful. This way you can control the kaossilator and volca with midi notes or with midi clock from Ableton and hear the sound via the audio inputs. 4i4 and 8i6 have midi in/out. You can split the midi out with a midi thru box from Kenton.

@SvenAikoNx 3 года назад
and did you record the synths and stuff into the mpc as a midi track or an normal audio track?
@reedalerise
@reedalerise 3 года назад
@@SvenAikoNx Thanks. Blofeld can (in theory) play multiple sounds on different midi channels. On each MPC track you can scroll 'program' with the big data wheel - this allows you to scroll through saved sounds on any synth. The MPC is just sending out midi note data to the synths - not generating or recording any sound. Audio goes into the mixer and is recorded on the laptop.

Not sure if there are further guides. You need to understand the purpose of midi in, out, thru. And also audio routing. I find it's helpful to play around with what you have, trying different configurations. And remember there is no 'perfect setup' ; mine is always evolving.

+AppliedMusicChannel MPC is the master here. Ableton is just recording the audio. You could it with Ableton sequencing and recording audio too. Yes, you could use beatstep pro instead of an MPC - the major difference is beatstep pro can only output 3(?) midi channels and the MPC can do 16 and also sample

Thanx for sharing! I have one question, don't know if it is a stupid one but just curious :-) -> I see you use a stereo input channel on the A&H for a stereo output synth, but also a sepperate channel (line in 8 + 9) What is the difference, and can it dammage the A&H to use a L input + R input jack in the Line inputs? Thanx in advance!

as far as I know it makes no difference using a stereo hannel or 2 mono ones. Mono channels should be hard panned left and right to get a stereo effect though. Never had any problems

I thought that a mixer is an audio interface? Or doesn't yours come with one? Can and does the akai mpc control everything here, and can it be the main controller for all of your setup, or does the mixer play a part in that too? To anybody, thanks. I'm new to how all of this goes together.

Tbh I’m stuck in choosing the appropriate mixer. I’m in between a Korg MW mixer or the new Tascam Models. I own a TR8, TB3, Korg KP3, Microkorg, CDJ, MPC, Guitar, Piano, Bass Guitar, a Boss Over-Drive Pedal, and a Boss Sp Sampler as of right now. So for a total of 11 hardware pieces/equipment what mixers are generally suggested? (including channel wise) I’m new to music and producing and would like to learn how to a build a workflow with mixer integration. Thank you!
@reedalerise
@reedalerise 4 года назад
Only real advice is buy something with a few more inputs than you currently need - you'll always want to expand at some point. Those new tascam mixers look nice with the individual digital audio outputs - I can't see if the korg outputs audio over usb. Personally I don't use a mixer any more but prefer a 16 input audio interface going into my DAW.
@adriannunez8868
@adriannunez8868 3 года назад
Reedale Rise was there any difference in the sound/ tone quality from the switch? If I get a 16 channel mixer will I necessarily need to get a 16 input audio interface? I’m looking to get both the audio interface and mixer working together. And maybe later on add some compressors and amp boxes. Would like your take. Thanks again!
@reedalerise
@reedalerise 3 года назад
@@adriannunez8868 If you get the Tascam Model you don't need to also get an audio interface - each individual audio channel comes into your DAW over USB cable (from what I can see). The sound characteristics/colour of every interface will be subtlety different. I wouldn't bother with hardware amps/compressors if just starting out - there are VSTs that can do this in the computer much cheaper and more conveniently.
@adriannunez8868
@adriannunez8868 3 года назад
Reedale Rise Besides the Tascam what other mixers would you recommend? I’m looking into a Midas Venice right now which is why I’m asking about the audio interface. Besides compressors/amps I would like to invest more so in the interface and mixer. I’ll most likely buy a mixer first before an interface and I’m curious what your take is. Thanks a lot for the help.

I'm dying to know if you've filled the rest of those channels on the Allen and Heath yet haha. Serious question though: have you tried using the mixer as an interface, if so, what was your experience?
@reedalerise
@reedalerise 7 лет назад
I don't actually use the mixer any more - use a multi input audio interface (Focusrite 18i20). I could easily fill the inputs now tho! I did experiment with the USB audio output from the mixer and I didn't think the audio quality was very good, so went back to routing audio a stereo out from the mixer into my interface

If you were tracking MIDI for multiple hardware synths, can't you use a MIDI merge box to take the MIDI outs from all your synths and merge them to one MIDI input on your MPC? They'd still be on separate channels, so you could avoid having to use a separate controller and then use the synths themselves to both send MIDI to the MPC as well as receive.
@reedalerise
@reedalerise 4 года назад
Yes, midi merge box can consolidate your midi channels into one cable going into the MPC.

How would I set up my laptop with my usb interface, analogue desk, and monitor speakers? I want to route the output of my laptop to my mixer, and back in again so that i can record my ITB sounds with analogue colour. How do I wire up the cables so that I can monitor the sound without recording also? How do I do this in Cubase 7? If I dont select the interface inputs within cubase, do I still hear the inputs from the mixer in my monitors? Interfaces and laptops generally confuse me when it comes to audio: Im used to just having a mixer, hardware, and an amp.
@reedalerise
@reedalerise 9 лет назад
complicated question! you need to run your audio outputs from soundcard to the desk. hopefully your desk has more than one main stereo output (mine has a main out and an aux out). aux out then needs to be sent back into the soundcard. Then either connect soundcard directly to speakers or use the other stereo output from the mixer and connect to the speakers.

+tasss550 If I understand you right - no, you can't make another sound with the DX7 as it's monotimbral (can only play one sound at once). The Blofeld is multitimbral though - can play more than one sound at once on different midi channels at same time - lots of fun!
