For emergency preparedness you can now buy a solar recharged battery bank that output 5 and 12 volts. 20,000 mAh. Peak output is actually 20 watts. It weighs 1.04 pounds and comes with four solar panels. Larger units have up to 37,000 mAh @ 13 volts and solar panels that will completely recharge the battery bank in four hours. YOU can put together a nice .01 to 56 MHz wire antenna that weights less than 2 pounds. You can take it with you. For roughly 12 lbs. plus 25 pounds of bush crafting gear you can run away from home.

You positive and negative feed lines should be on opposite side of the battery bank. It makes an even draw across the batteries.

One thing I found early is that companies like VmaxTanks make batteries specifically designed for use with solar panels and charge controllers. They have the screw terminals and such that make it easy and safe to connect the large cables needed for the high currents found in 12 and 24 volt systems. Corrosion is practically a non issue with these batteries and their terminals. I also use a contact grease to insure that the terminals don't have issues in the future. The other plus with these batteries is that they are sealed and do not need to be topped off with water like cheaper batteries that are not designed for solar charging and use.

The diagram shows both out leads (from the same end of the batteries. Shouldn’t the leads be at each end of the battery banks? Explaining a little more: wire series parallel but at the opposite ends, the positive and negative to inverters vs positive/negative leaving from the same end of the batteries. This is so that the batteries discharge at the same rate? Just curious

I was brought up to lay our batteries on an insulator. Never directly on the ground. See for yourself. Watch the voltage drop when placed directly on the ground and watch the voltage hold better when its sat on an insulator. I've seen the difference. Setting them on the ground will prematurely wear out your batteries. Js

if in a pinch you can use even copper pipe (preferably two or three sizes (say 10mm, 12mm and 15mm) shoved into each other, flattened on both ends and drilled to mount onto your clamp terminal. I even used copper water pipe pieces for my lugs...very nice, very cheap and even better then your standard crimp on terminals since all of them are pure copper...

A multitude of reasons my friend. It was "Okay" to have that voltage/amperage going through it. I would have liked it thinker but at the time the people I was doing it for couldn't afford to buy anything else for it. So I had to use what was available. I have since rebuilt the solar system from scratch because an Untrained "Electrician" did some "Upgrading" and ruined the entire system. i see a problem with your system, i connected my 20 battery in a row like yours, but ran a paralell line down the middle for a middle 12 volt leg, since i had 2 12 volt inverters and 24 volt charger, they make a balance to keep the legs balanced, the way you have yours you cold have uneven voltage in each of your 24volt series bundles. add a line down the middle to tie them together and get a balancer.

I have a question that I have never seen brought up on these multiple battery arrangements. Now I have no experience with solar but as a mechanic for 30+ years, diesel light trucks have two batteries. When one goes down it will take the other one down and if you only replace one thee other will take down the new one. Thus both batteries are replaced together. Now those are lead acid batteries, does the same happen when that solar battery pck has one short out or no?
@TheOffGridFamily
@TheOffGridFamily 6 лет назад
The short answer is no but if you leave the damaged battery in the battery bank then it can cause damage to the other batteries or through it not working it can put extra strain on the other batteries

How many watt solar panel will i need (minimum) to work with it. (3) If I have a 12V system i.e. 12V inverter, 12V battery and 12/24V charge controller. can i use a 24V solar panel on this setup (4) How does how big the Amps of a charge controller affect the working of the charge controller positively Thanks

Hi there I'm really sorry but I cant answer all of your questions to a safe and satisfactory manor. I can say that it is possible to set up a 12v system with 24v solar panels, it just takes a bit of fiddling with the battery circuit. What I would advise is phone a company that deals with solar power and ask them. often they are quit happy to help you with any queries you have. I'm sorry I cant be more helpful but my knowledge in these matters is very limited compared to a professional and would hate to tell you something that caused you harm or damage of equipment etc. thanks for your interest and sorry for the lack of help

3 advice: bus bar, bus bar, bus bar. the way you connected the batteries (you chose well with the bigger sections of the cables) your batteries will never charge equally. the last one in the chain will always see a lower voltage because of the voltage drop over the length of the cables between the batteries. take a copper or aluminum bar, bring the main cable from the charger on that bar. from the bar you make one separate cable to each battery, all of the same length. In general, parallel batteries are never as good as bigger batteries. when you have to replace your bank (hopefully not soon) have a look at big capacity 6V batteries or even 2V cells.

A small comment, On the first schematic, move the negative main lead to the opposit side off the bank, one lead (negative) on the left, and the other,(positive) on the right,(or otherway around) in that case you dont have the voltage loss, and un equal draw/charge on the bank due to the cables resistance.. Oh, and never, never! connect battery,s later to a bank!, when used they have a different internal resistance, and can damage the whole bank, always build a bank whit the same battery batch, and dont use them seperate, but always as one connected bank, to get as mutch power , and life out of your battery,s!!. (this is a profi advice, I build , sell and repair solar battery banks an totall installations for off grid use.)

A word of caution, there should not be any flammables around your battery bank, noticed you had a gasoline container within 4 feet, I''m hoping it has never had gasoline in it. A spark will ignite gas fumes in an instant, and just hooking up batteries will cause a spark. Just trying to be safe so you can enjoy your time with your kids.

That is a really good warning. I am aware of the danger and none of them were actually used for fuel or any flammable liquid. I should have written a word of warning when I made the video but I was a noob at editing.

You should see some of the insults this guy and others have thrown at ME the last few days. RU-vid is FULL of people who "THINK" they know what they are doing!

DYNAMIC Risk Assessment.. OMG it looks like you have the batteries up against the walls, is that wall metal?. If it is, that is a big health and safety concern to have the batteries and heavy gauge wiring near it in what looks like a big metal container along with liquids in close proximity. You have a cabinet on you right hand side with what also looks like liquid along with other loose junk up there. All it will take is one bump from you wile you working with the batteries for it all to come tumbling down with can start a domino effect of horror. Spark,fire and so on the what looks like wood under you batteries will only help the fire burn and spread faster then you can blink. If the explosion thus not kill you the smoke and the heat from the fire will.. any of this sinking in yet?. For others, if not for your own Safty, I hope my comments have shocked you enough for you to put Safty first when working on this type of project. By the looks of your setup, it’s a matter of life or death. I’m sry to say that this is a good video to show students what not to do wile working on these systems.

A lot of what you say would be correct if what you say was true but you have made a lot of assumptions that are incorrect. This system is safe and all safety checks were done before, during and after. thanks for your comment.

Definitely the wrong place to put all those batteries.Just for my info what should the batteries be sitting on .I know if you sit it on the ground will run it down really fast.What is good material that batteries should sit on

Lol safety checks? Look at your own video and you will see what I’m talking about. Are you trying to say I’m not seeing the danger, or are you just blind to it? the fact you can’t admit to it is a more scary situation, as this is the first step changing the wrongs

The Off Grid Family very poor attitude to safty to take. It’s not about me, it’s about the fact of this matter that you seem to be blind to.. If you would rather blame someone else instead of taking responsibility That is we’re the mane problem is. Let’s hope someone else don’t get hurt because of your own inability to recognise your own dangerous practices even though it’s stearin at you on your own video.

The Off Grid Family and I only picked out just some of the very dangerous things in this video. I’ll leave it for others to find the rest.

Keeping up the good work I will, as health and safty is something I do for a living for 9yrs now. I’ve also built 5 Soler Generators my self so I am a fan of ppl DIY there own project, but it has to be in a safe way. thanks, I’ll take that even though your comment are more out of ego and being sarcastic. Thank god about the walls, if what your sAying is true, if you check what I was saying I was just asking the question. It’s a shame about the other dangers your ego is blind to, like the liquids and junk in close proximity to the batteries and the liquid on top of the unit you have on you right hand side, wires hanging loosely and how your tugging and cutting of live wire begs beliefs, the list go’s on and on and on But hay, ignorance is bliss to some ppl.

Please do not play power systems you sound you aren't qualified to be installing .. Especially when AC and DC charging .. Sounds like you been in the Reno game..

Biggest 163 I was being sarcastic Looking at what he was doing he sounded like a halfwit that shouldn't be playing around electronics he wasn't qualified to install.. There is ways and means of setting these things up and by the looks of things the charger was ill equipped to handle the job it was tasked to do.. And to be honest he sounds like diy person who gut homes and makes a profit.. Looking at the current UK for people who play with electricity and the safety regs.. It is a bet this is an illegal bodge job because you be lucky if the actual charger be rated for more than 1-2 batteries looking at the battery bank it isn't advisable to be playing with crap hardware that looks like it was was was designed for a small ups batteries not 12-48vdc automotive batts
@TheOffGridFamily
@TheOffGridFamily 7 лет назад
well you guess wrong my friend! I am fully trained and what do you mean by charger? do you mean the inverter? if so then it is rated for that higher current and voltage but I had advised the person I was doing it for to buy a bigger better one which they did in the end. I brought none of the stuff there and it was an old couple that asked for some help. I know you assume you have mystical powers of "Guess Work" but your wrong! People who dont upload videos are always the ones to give negative comments with no helpful info in them. if you dont like it then by all means dont watch it!
@biggest163

Jas, i was agreeing with you, it was NOT a reply to his comment. He hasn't even followed his own wiring diagram at beginning of video, resulting in x1 battery being reverse charged, for this cell will probably end up with it exploding at some point. Also using red leads for negative too..... This is a how too video on how not too!
