Hi Mick, a little advice from a old broken builder, work smart not hard. Winter comes early. Try to think out each project before starting. Don't cause permanent damage to your arm, use the chainsaw! Unless you are going to push it over with a backhoe cut it at ground level the first time. Raise the floor of your tent off the ground or all your stuff is going to be soggy. ( Build a platform). Pli don't think I am being critical I just want to see you succeed 😉
On my research on buying land, that was one of the mains points…road access and right of way, water, mineral and timber rights. I had never heard of this, also unrestricted land in many states still have regulations 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️. Alaska was listed as the least restrictive.
Hi Mick! Look, you will be getting some criticism from keyboardists out there. I’m 70 y/o and I could hear you just fine. First rule of buying land, rights of ingress and egress, which you have already learned..Work with your neighbors to straighten out the road snafu and it will all work out. Where is your water source? Keep toiling, and be safe.
I think a lot of people who attempt this end up homeless. You are so fortunate and smart to follow the guidance you have been given by your parents. They are a treasure trove of wisdom and experience.
I was thinking that your neighbour did you a great favour by telling you no from the get go over using his road. If you had encountered a 'waffler' who said yes, but reluctantly, I guarantee that you would have been more annoyed down the road (sorry) when he changes his mind at a more inconvenient time for you. Despite the extra hard work, you will be glad for your own road. Good luck with everything! Cheering you on from Nova Scotia! (I have a grandson your age, so can relate! lol)
That is a great point ~and one of the seven habits is ‘keep the end in mind’ (seven habits of highly effective people ) Stephen covey the end of this meaning - if Mick relied on that road and then it was taken back he would have to be doing all his road work later ~ post cabin build
Do everything in your power to be a good neighbor, which means figuring out what they care about. But in the end, you don't really want to rely on someone else to have full access to your property. In the long run, this is probably a good result.
Exactly my thought. You never know when circumstances can change years down the line, maybe he sells it, maybe they get into a dispute - whatever. All of a sudden you can't use it. Better to build it now on a blank canvas than have to figure something out after he builds out the property
i would not bother again with the neighbor ... you get yourself your own road in and you are not beholden to anyone ‼️👍🏼.... really a beautiful piece of property ... can not wait to see wait is ahead on your journey ‼️
Work smarter not harder Mitch. De-limb trees as you cut them and put them in piles by diameter. That way theyll be ready to use and you wont have to worry about a snake pile. Cut baughs from the pine trees for under your tent to make a softer and drier place to sleep. Set up kichen away from your tent so bears and other critters dont come around. You can use those trees and cut down about 10 and make a counter in between two trees. The more you can get off the ground, the better. A chain saw will be your best friend in no time. Build your cabin on the highest lay of the land and your outhouse on the lowest. The rest is all about being creative and enjoying the road ✌️ ❤️ 🏕
Hey Mick, your War Horn is tuned to a near perfect F# (F-sharp). Also, please get yourself a full sized cast iron frying pan, you'll use it a lot, trust me.
Gosh yes, and save your bacon fat for cooking (frying potatoes, steak, etc) and this will season your pan and all you need to keep it clean is scrape the bits and wipe it out with a paper towel or cloth. I've been using my pans for over 4o years already! I even have a cast iron wok. lol Cheers!
I found your channel because I've been following your parent's channels for a few years. I lived in Fairbanks for a while and I really miss the area and people. I would enjoy seeing some of the town and surrounding area if you feel comfortable filming it. The views from the University are lovely too. I'm excited for you, Mick. You're doing a great job. Glad you have this opportunity to build your own place. You've certainly had great teachers with Dave and Brooke. Looking forward to watching your progress. Glad you have a friend nearby.
Love this!! There is nothing like working with your hands to built something of your own. So excited to follow all you do for your piece of the planet. Don't worry about the neighbor, it is his land to do with as he chooses. Better to have your own driveway that is totally under your control. The horn is so cool. Carry on young man, carry on. We are all behind you.
TOIL FOR YOUR FOOD❣️ i’ve already been pouring everybody about that- I tell them people say it’s too hard to grow your own food that’s hard work. Yeah I’d rather work for the government and be enslaved that’s not hard. 🙄🙄🙄
@@MickWhipple depending on sun exposure, you can plant edible food along all 650 feet of your driveway. If you bother to create an opening in trees where sun hits the dirt.... Plant some cabbage next year. Or , maybe you can get away with a single crop of beets this year, if you plant before July.
Mick, I couldn't be happier for you. Beautiful property. That war horn was a perfect ending. Loving this adventure that you are sharing with us. Thank you and prayers for safety as you continue to work on your new home.
Daniel, it's nice to know that he has a friend 20 minutes away. Was great to see you giving him a hand, that's a true friend. Look forward to seeing you in future videos. Hello from Florida :)
I helped my son build a cabin near Wasilla. Best adventure of my life! Enjoying watching you as you build a new life. May the Lord protect you and give you strength and endurance!
Congratulations on your new property! It is beautiful. So happy for you! You have a lot of work to do before winter. I like how you jumped right into it. I worked at a meat and grocery supply company back in the 1960s and the superintendent of the meat packing division (I was his secretary) gave me a beautiful horn from a cow. I cleaned it up and shaved it down with pieces of thick glass from a broken Coca Cola bottle. Took a long time but it turned out beautifully and sounded a lot like yours. I had forgotten about that. I gave it away years ago. Wish I still had it.
I love the horn, haha! I'm a teacher and very proud of your goals and commitment right out of school. I love your sense of humor and style of storytelling!
Gorgeouse property with great views and natural forest area. Sad that the nieghbour is not being hospitable to let you use his road at least for the time being maybe he will later, Love the tent you'll call home while clearing some areas of the property looks cozy enough. Nice find on the horn purhapes more treasures shall be found , Thank's for bringing us with you love your property congratulation Mick from Ontario , Canada
When I lived in the country, a neighbor asked me if he could put up a fence so his cows could graze. I said yes. He put it up 15 to 20 feet onto my property and wouldn't move it! I ended up selling it all to his son.
Your momma shares her food with us, but I like the authentic commentary you offered about not wanting to share food shopping with us! You are doing great! Looking forward to sharing your adventures here on RU-vid 🎉
@@juledorenno, animal fats are quite healthy for you. The FDA has lied about that for years, because they get paid by companies that make alternative fats. Eat lard, tallow, and butter, NOT shortening or seed oils
Great job Mick! You’re making progress and learning great things along the way. I love your comical storytelling. How much property, 3-5 acres and I’m guessing you’re going to drill a well and hook up to electric or do solar? Don’t mind the critics, it will grow you some thick skin. Take the advice that helps you and leave the rest. Everyone has their own ideas, but this is your journey. God bless! I bet your Mom and Dad are proud of you. I am and excited to watch you build your first home. I’d love to be younger and doing what you’re doing. Alaska is on my bucket list, maybe next year I’ll get there. And what a view!
Mick, I really loved the video. I am sorry to hear the neighbor is less than amiable about some things. I pray it all goes well and that you are safe. The horn was epic! I cannot wait for the next vid! God bless ya! Woot! ~John
Mick, thanks for sharing the journey. Be kind to yourself and use your better tools and save your arm. You’ve got a small window before the next frost and we all want to see you healthy and strong.
Love the "Bob Ross" mountain view there! It's great to find the joy in realizing when "enough" comes your way. Even a simple egg and bacon breakfast can be satisfying in the simplest of surroundings. I've come to appreciate cooking "where I am with what I've got" (your Uncle Ryan gets it, too:) ) Enjoy the adventure, Mick ... Thanks for taking us along! God Bless
Yayy Mick, officially settled! Yous weren’t kidding about the huge skeeters in Alaska, pretty sure one blocked out a whole frame, lol. Sorry to hear about the not so friendly neighbour, hopefully they’ll come around. Maybe keep the war cry at the OTHER end of their property…? 🤷♀️🤣 Cheers from Eastern Canada.
WOO HOO! I really enjoyed your last video and I saw you followed your folks or just your mom? Are you far from them? And I was watching you work and thinking "where is your chainsaw kid"?! I saw it required extraction from THE FILTH WAGON! (love it) I can't wait to see what you do next........this is just so interesting! God bless ya, be safe and keep workin'.......miles to go before you sleep.
Much respect to you my friend! I myself moved out as soon as I turned 18, I'm 20 now and will be 21 in December. I live in my camper out in the woods near a lake in South Carolina. When I was younger it was always my dream to live off the land and have a homestead one day. Currently I reside on a good friend of mines property but it is still very nice here and I look forward to purchasing some land of my own one day to put my camper on. Its rare nowadays to find young men like us living this way and being responsible and taking care of ourselves. I'm so glad I'm not the only one left of us lol
You're a NATURAL and AWESOME STORY TELLER! Excellent vid from the music, scenes, Convo, videography, and topic! Keep on keeping on!❤ You're a ROCKSTAR 😎
So exciting to watch your adventures! Thanks for the chuckles along the way! “You’re out of your mind if you think I sleep .. waste of time” 🤣🤣🤣 I wish I still had your energy level. Can’t wait to see how you progress into turning this property into your new home!
I think your breakfast looked very cozy. I cannot imagine how gratifying that first night was, sleeping on "your" land. Waking up with that incredible view. Awesome! Well done!
Hi. I'm an older lady from Okla. And I've been subscribed to both your parents channels for quite a while. I'm not sure why you are not cutting your trees at ground level. Seems to me like double work. Your chain saw will be your good friend. But you have great ambition so that's half the battle. You are from an extended family if experts and they didn't get that way over night. You will do a great job. Thanks for letting us go through your journey with you. See you on your next visit.
Yayyy!! You made it!! " Obliterating the natural landscape " 😅 You are naturally funny i see! Wow those views are amazing; you are a lucky young man indeed! That horn you found is super cool 👍 Can't wait to see your nexr vid!
You are doing great! Keep up the good work. Create an in ground refrigerator to keep the food cool. Create a picnic table to eat at and cook on. Look into a hand pump water well, if the water table is not too deep. Find a place or make a place to park your car where it will not get stuck in mud or covered too much in snow. It will not make it far in deep snow.
You must beyond excited to actually be on YOUR own piece of land with countless possibilities!! I can’t wait to watch your journey Mick 😎 Congratulations 👏
Hi Mick, from Minnesota here, I faithfully watch Bushradical and Girl in the Woods, I'm looking so forward to watch u pursue your dream, good luck and God bless you
Takes me back to when I had to clear my driveway to get my car on my little parcel. Every time I came out I was able to get further into the land. I cut all the trees close to the ground and just drove over and built over, and gardened around the low stumps. Then I finally rented a stump grinder and took them all below dirt at once. That was a great day. I'm pretty excited in the future to see you go three dimensional on your cabin and enclose it with a roof. I'll never forget the feeling of actually being enclosed in my own building for the first time, and the best part was that it started to rain right away, which made it that much more satisfying. If you set up a little table off the ground to cook on and a good way to sit and eat with a side table of some sort, that will be a game changer for your meals. Those little things are so big when you start by sitting and cooking on the ground. Two more recommendations, even though you didn't ask: You''re going to be clearing a lot of trees and building up some huge brush piles. Figure out the final place you want all the logs and branches, and take the extra time to pile them in the final location. I've had to move my logs and branch piles a couple times, and I really wish I'd planned better and took the extra effort the first and only time. Also, be sure to cut down all the trees you need to fell BEFORE you build any structures and even your garden fences, etc. I've lost fencing and even fruit trees, because I was too impatient to really clear the land first. Best of luck, you're living the best life.
I am enjoying every part of the journey that you share Mick. You are doing what I am too coward to do myself. Will be praying for you each step of the way. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
@@susandobbins1313 Well I built a cargo trailer conversion all by myself, and Mick’s dear Mom “Girl in the Woods” so kindly showcased it in one of her videos….and now I just need that plot of land to take the plunge and do it. 💕🙏🏼
Very cool shofar! And I liked how you used your turn signal at the beginning of the video, even though no one was around haha (my kids do that too). Glad you have Daniel out there, being so far from your prior home, it must be great to at least have some companionship out there in the boonies, not knowing anyone.
Definitely next-gen Whipple. You have your own style for sure, but one thing you took along that I love is the authenticity. No fancy show or arrogance. Just exactly as it is. Keep it up! It's what we love about the Whipples!
Suggestion for you, I live in a tent on my homestead for the moment and I ended up putting a frame around the tent and covering the tent with tarps, it will help to keep your setup a LOT cleaner, and drier. It also keeps the sun off the tent, because the sun will destroy most tents and tarps within months, and there's very few things worse than having to replace something that you don't intend to be permanent.
I am delighted to be along for your journey ! The views are gorgeous and your enthusiasm is contagious ! Use your resources wisely (including your own muscles !) , stay safe and healthy...so happy for you !
Hey Mick. Good to see you in your video again. Love the horn. You are working hard for your land and making progress. So good to hear you have a friend nearby. Prayers for stamina and good health.
Beautiful views. I'm so happy you're there & have a good friend too! Enjoy the work, take pictures, important part of your dream to remember! The horn is a treasure. Wow! Best to you Mick
Absolutely gorgeous property Mick! My first thought was it comes with a miniature Christmas tree farm & enough birch to make a table and chair. Totally looking forward to seeing your process of building your homestead. Stay awesome!!❤️
Are you going to eventually take out the lower part of the trees? I don't understand leaving the high stumps? Your land is beautiful. What a great adventure ❤
I'm a big fan and subscribe to both of your parent's channels. i feel like a proud parent warching you make your way starting out like they did. cheering for you in SE MN ❤
Glad to see you made it to your property. I had trouble hearing what you were saying sometimes because of the wind noise. You might get a wind sock for your microphone. All those trees you cut down should be cut up into fire wood not just thrown into a pile. There's some that are pretty straight that would make great poles for many uses. Good luck with the next phase and keep'em coming.
New here - binge watching, very glad YT suggested it. But I am stuck on the first video - that poor cat who so obviously loves you a great deal must miss you terribly! Poor thing. Have fun and good luck this winter.
so have loved what i have seen! very smart young man! mom and dad tout you well! found you through your mom she is awsome! keep on will continue to watch!
what a beautiful place! looks like you are making progress. organic lavender oil is a good nontoxic bug repellent. breakfast looks healthy, tasty and filling. muscle pain at the end of a work day put ice on the painful spots when time to sleep all night in the morning you will be pain free.
@@andreaclark9398 yes, I have heard of Alaska mosquitoes! I live in the low country of Georgia on a barrier island or called "the swamp" we have gators, copperheads, cottonmouths, rattle snakes and mosquitoes. organic lavender oil nontoxic has worked the best for me.
It was fun to explore your property with you‼️you did make decent progress‼️I like the spot you cleared for your tent😊👍Yummy first breakfast‼️ The horn you found is cool and I loved how you blew it to christen your property‼️Looking forward to your next video already👍😊‼️
Gorgeous views you have. I like the horn. Try to have some fun on your property while you are working on it. It's nice you have a friend there to help you. Take care and God Bless you always
Your Hysterical Mick😂 Your feet must kill you by the end of the day, you need some work boots friend. Your place is gorgeous, excited for you!! Be safe 🙏
Beautiful property and beautiful views! So excited to see you transform this into your homestead! Your hard work will be rewarding! Thanks for taking us on this journey with you!
Lookin good. I love the property. Beautiful land and trees. I know it’s a lot of work going into it but, the payoff will be worth the effort. Remember, it’s the journey, not the destination that makes the best memories. Thank you for taking us on your journey.
That many small trees mean clear cutting. Those trees don't look older than you. Bless you for talking with your neighbor. Sometimes you get salty neighbors.
