This is a walk-through on the settings I use for capturing motion with the Olympus OM-D EM1 MKII. Hopefully it will be useful to people stepping into the camera for the first time or for still photographers who want to start exploring the cameras capabilities for shooting motion video. (second upload corrected background audio levels)

Thanks so much for another great tutorial! Your explanations are very clear and precise. I have an EM1ii and love it for stills, but I need to learn to shoot video. I’ve noticed that the aperture and shutter settings I use for stills don’t seem to translate well to video and I end up with dark clips. I also would like to be sure I can retain my video settings while jumping back and forth between video and still modes for things like hybrid portraits. Can you please do some more tutorials for those of us who are so video-challenged? Thanks again :)

The other night I was sitting on the balcony capturing still images of the moon in the clouds. I selected manual mode. As the clouds moved by the moon captured a video image. The video was all black. It’s as though the manual exposure settings for still images were overridden. Hmmm …. strokes goatee.

Excellent and much needed video. Your tutorials, particularly the set up videos, have been essential for me as I make the conversion from Canon to Olympus. In this video you highlight how one can set up the camera for taking videos. In particular you mentioned using the function lever as the switch from still photography to video. I've been trying that out but have become a bit confused. When in switch position 1 (still photography) I noticed that I can just hit the record button and the camera will begin recording video --- using the PASM mode that I was using for still pictures, and using the same exposure settings I had been using for still pictures. (Or at least that is the way it seems to me.) When I activate switch position 2 (video photography) I the camera leaps into the full video mode which if I had selected cin4K meant the exposure settings change drastically (ISO whatever I had in last video shot, Shutter at 1/48th, and aperture wide open ) This creates a problem though because the exposure settings are now a big mis-match to my previous still shot exposures and I find I need to rapidly crank the Shutter/Aperture dials to get a suitable image. How do you avoid this?.... Or alternatively, what is the advantage of using the function lever to go from still to video?.... It seems to me that any speed advantage is lost when I'm fumbling with the exposure settings upon making a change. (In other words, I might as well have just used the dial on the top of the camera.) Thanks for any advice you can provide..

Hi Joe, thank again for some much great quality information. Can I ask; on a UH2 SD card, at Cinema 4K, what size card would you recommend? Is biggest (i.e. 256(?)) always best and how long could I record for? Is there a cut off of 1/2 hour (like some Sony cameras)? Are there any cautions about filming for longer periods of time. Really appreciate any thoughts you can send my way.
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 4 года назад
Hi Roz, at the C4K setting your memory cards get used very quickly so the larger the better, I'd recommend 128GB as being a good trade off for price/size/performance. Yes you'll have the 30 minute record limit no matter which settings you use since that's a limitation Olympus (and most others) impose on their cameras for what I'm told are tax reasons. One tip I have for longer recordings is to try the regluar 4K mode instead of C4K, you'll get about twice the capacity in minutes you can record and I think it still looks pretty great. As far as cards go, you definitely don't need UHSII cards to record video as any card with a minimum of 30MB/second will handle video with no fuss. I tend to shoot video to my 2nd card slot and as I explained in the video it's limited to UHS I anyway. The last advice I can think of at the moment is that if you've never tried it, try shooting in the FLAT profile. You will need to add contrast after the fact but it's nice insurance in case you want to push the color/highlights/shadows after capture. I hope that helps, let me know if anything else comes up!

Hi Joe, I know you have a lot of experience with the EM1 MKII. I own this camera and have an issue. Basically in mechanical shutter. I can take 50 60 100 photos and no problem. Then for some reason I take a photo, the screen and LCD goes black. When it did I removed the Lens, thinking the shutter jammed. But it was down and the sensor was visible. So I turned it off then back on and all good again. However I later realised after waiting when it goes black, it then shuts down. Turn it back on again and ok again. I have now set it to silent mode activated the beep and flash and use it in silent and all corrected. Have you heard this before. It seems to have appeared since 3.2 firmware was installed. Could SD card cause this. I am using 16GB slow version scan disk. Your thoughts would be appreciated

I leaned a lot from your video, thank you very much. Now that the EM5 MKIII is out, does it have the same capabilities for shooting motion video? I'm considering to buy it because of its light weight; but I need a good camera to shoot ballroom dancers indoor.

this is still relevant to me. thank you for the effort and the sharing. your vids are always informative. some video-centric questions: does the OM-D EM1mk2 have access to zebras? are the audio meters visible during recording? is there a way to expand the image to check focus during recording? thanks in advance. thumbs up.
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 4 года назад
No to zebras, yes to audio levels during recording and the punch in is only available before recording. It's definitely not at the same level in terms of features as a Panasonic camera but the AF improvements in firmware 3.0 coupled with the IS are very well done for video.

@@JosephEllisPhotographer thank you for the reply and sharing. what do you think of the actual video image quality? 8bit/422 should look good. does it? nice colors? using either the flat or log400, does the footage grade well? would you use the video from a OM-D EM1mk2 for paid corporate video work?
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 4 года назад
@@smalltalk.productions9977 I do believe the camera is up to professional work for sure. I've used it successfully for corporate event work and interviews and it performed flawlessly. I tend to use it with the flat profile since I'd prefer not to spend extra time grading but then I can't claim to be an expert in that field either. If you're looking for an amazingly small rig that you can hand hold (no stabilzer needed) it's fantastic. The biggest downside for commercial work is the 30 min record limit if it's your main camera for a presentation etc.

@@JosephEllisPhotographer if after the 3.0 software update the hybrid autofocus is as good as described , then for corporate interviews and events in a small package, i remain interested. last question: are the camera's audio pre-amps good enough for pro interview audio or do you use a separate audio recorder? again, thanks for the sharing. i am an appreciative subscriber.

If you have the EM1 MKI I’m not sure there is any improvement to be had but if you have the MKII with the addition of the firmware update from Spring/Summer 2019 the video AF has been highly improved. I use both CAF and single with a very high success now for run and fun projects.

Correct, you can of course vary that a bit and it will still work but double the frame rate is still the best advice for video.
@fabioarodrigues

Great video. A question I have is if it is possible to record more than 2 min continuous shooting at Cinema 4k? I have a UHS-2 card on slot 1 and my videos are always broken up in smaller 2 min video clips that I have to then Stoch together in post, which is very annoying when doing just a video of my kids playing around in the park.
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 4 года назад
I agree that is a pain, one tip I have is that you might try the standard 4K setting. The bit rate is 100Mbps instead of the (variable) 237 Mbps of C4K so you’ll get a lot more record time overall and each segment of a longer take will be 5-6 minutes instead of 2ish.
@fabioarodrigues
@fabioarodrigues 4 года назад
@@JosephEllisPhotographer thanks for the response and for the tip. So that's not really a way around it? I thought that it was something I had configured wrong. I never tried Panasonic cameras, but I heard that some of them can record up to 30 min continuously in 4k. Initially I was using a standard UHS-1 card and thought that was the reason for not getting more than 2 min of recording. I bought a faster UHS-2 card and had the same result. So apparently for filming in 4k I would have the same result with either card. But the UHS-2 card helps when shooting photos at 60 fps. If it is true that Panasonic cameras can really film up to 30 min continuously in 4k, I'm a bit disappointed at Olympus for not doing the same. Not everyone wants to edit their videos when filming their kids playing basketball or a ballet recital... Looks like I will have to go back to using Full HD instead...
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 4 года назад
Well first, your camera is recording continuously since there is no gap between the files. Second the reason for the multiple 2 minute clips has to do with a file size limitation not the card your using and the Panasonic I have used work the exact same way. What a GH5 can do however is record for more than 30 minutes without stopping (but you will still have multiple files). Sorry I can’t be of more help.
@fabioarodrigues
@fabioarodrigues 4 года назад
@@JosephEllisPhotographer You actually helped a lot. I now understand it is a file limitation and not a camera issue. Thanks for the info. Really like your content. I will definitely change now for the normal 100 Mbps when filming 4K, as you suggested. I just wish the camera manufacturers offered a simple solution for stitching all videos in one file for computer playback. Would make life much easier for consumers just interested in film simple life events in the best quality possible, without the need of third party software. I never had that issue with Full HD with my original E-M5, but again, I think I never filmed long enough to create a single 4GB file. It is a big leap going from Full HD to 4K. Cheers!

@MrTifoso31
@MrTifoso31 6 лет назад
Joseph Ellis Hi, it's me again ;) Without scientific tests I find that noise filter "low" or "off" make no visual difference. The manual says this Setting is for high iso values. But they don't say which ISO setting it begins with. At c4k and ISO 3200 noise begins to be obvious but in a (for me) usuable way (with noise filter off). Higher than 3200 makes no sense in c4k as sharpness begins to get softer. One curiosity: at c4k you have a slow & fast setting. Do you know how to set the frame rate for slow motion? I only get the faster options and again the manual is useless here. Regards, Giuseppe

Hi Roz, when I'm recording in my studio I have a shotgun mic over my head which is either attached to a second camera for an overhead angle or I have it plugged into a recorder like the LSP4. Then when I'm assembling the video I'll use that sound instead of the sound from my main camera angle. If I'm working at an event I'll have the shotgun mic in the hotshoe of my EM1.2 which I might have on a gimbal or a tripod. Keep mind the primary sound for a wedding usually still comes from lav mics. I hope that helps!

I know a lot of RU-vidrs say "24 frames/sec." "It's more cinematic." however, the most pixels you can put on a FHD TV is 1920x1080 - 16:9. 4K, same ration. Nobody in all the world broadcasts TV at 24 FPS. USA and a handful of others broadcast 30 FPS. Everywhere else, it's 25 FPS. Cinematographers use any different aspect ratios. If you don't shoot 16:9, then you must crop in post, or the video is letterboxed - black bands top and bottom. The camera has one UHS-II slot. There is no point in using a UHS-II card in slot 2. It requires UHS-I U3 cards for its maximum video spec. UHS-I cards are cheaper that UHS-II. I have one camera that can definitely benefit from UHS-II card, it's a Panasonic GH5 which requires UHS-II V60 cards, but only for its maximum resolution and speed.
