Finland ordered 64 of f-35 aircraft, because it is simply a better aircraft. F-35 beat gripen with flying colours in Finnish air force's tests and met all the requirements.

@@katt77 one of Finland's requirements was that the F-35 needs to be able to land and take off on public roads, and F-35 passed those tests also. F-35 is therefore also able to perform landings and takeoffs on public roads in Finland, just like the Finnish F-18 Hornets.

But it is very last-gen. It can't compete with the F-35, that's why Finland chose the f-35 instead of Gripen, even though it cost more.

It is a beautiful plane, but not aiming at the right direction. Long ago big acft producers east/west understood, that maneuverability plus stealth are vital. Neither is provided with JAS. And you must note , that Gripen A/B never actually achieved a full operational status and they were opted out. That's why C/D has been a focus of interest, but even those do not compete with others. Now the Saab effort is in E/F. Well, Swedes are good in acft planning and production. But if the aim has been wrong?

@@ghostviggen Well, Gripen is an energy fighter, as well as F-16 and Eurofighter. But the shift is to maneuvering fighters - SU's, F-18 as a good example, Rafale. I do not know about F-35 - possibly it is a good maneuvering acft.

Different requirements. The finns needed longer range and bigger payloads than the A/B (and later C/D) versions could offer, hence they went with FA18 in the 90s. The E/F version would at least have the range and be closer in payload but was not even planned at the time. And later they went with F35 that has its advantages and disadvantages. They probably did the right choice, although I would love them to have Gripens as well, especially since it is easier to run from temporary road bases.

Been thinking of lot why did The goverment dich these magnificent planes and take 10 Time More costly F-35...guess its about The political issues...bet that they would let us to NATO without taking F-35 lightning II

Åke Henriksson Tott (Finnish) Finnish Infantry Regiment (Veteran) (8 companies) - Colonel Klas Hastfer (Swedish) There were even more Scotsmen than Finns in that battle Scots Brigade - Colonel James Lumsdaine Lumsdaine Infantry Regiment (Veteran) (8 companies) - Colonel James Lumsdaine (Scottish) Mackay/Monro Infantry Regiment (Veteran) (8 companies) - Colonel Donald Mackay and Robert Monro (Scottish) Ramsey Infantry Regiment (Veteran) (8 companies) - Colonel Sir James Ramsay (Scottish) Hamilton Infantry Regiment (Veteran) (8 companies) - Colonel Sir John Hamilton (Scottish) Sweden including Finland in those days had a small popualtion and could noty sustain a big army. The swedish kings had to hire a lot of mercenaries and that was expensive. My ancestor Alexander Ramsay came from Scotland leading a unit of 5000 scots mercenaries to fight for king John III in his war against Russia. Ramsay survived stayed in Sweden, married and his son moved to Finland and from him the line goes down to my mother.

Maybe take a look at Finnish losses (both military and civilian) fe. during the Great Northern War 1700-1721, when thousands civilians were slaughtered by Russians, raped or taken to slavery. During battle of Narva (1700) about one third of Swedish troops came from Finland.

Russia hade 20 good pilots left in ukraine that was 3 month ago. Perhaps they could get t55 to fly with some new recruits.

It's one thing to land on short stretches of road in the forest. The Gripen has a built-in control system that tells you what needs to be fixed, a moto change takes 60 minutes, the Gripen lands refueled and gets new weapons in 10 minutes. I wonder if the F35 can handle this in the forest, it will be needed when airports are knocked out by Russian missiles
