I made a wrap skirt out of the same material you have in this video except mine was pink and I completely understand the struggle you had making that sweater, and I used pin's when I used that material like you said it was a bad mistake because the material kept pulling and stretching as it would fall off the table and the pins would actually fall out or come loose and I'd have to end up re-pinning things or adjusting my pins and then I had problems where the material was stretching more than it should have in certain spots were bigger than others so it ended up being a lot of work because of that material because of the project not being the right one for that material and because I used pins that kept coming out because they just would not stay in the material and it was so heavy and the material draped like you said then the pins got caught they came out of it if I had the clips I would have used them on that project that material needs those clips. At least in my opinion
@SecretLifeOfASeamstress
@SecretLifeOfASeamstress 2 года назад
Oh yes I can completely see what you mean. When I prewashed this fabric I hung it over the banister and ended up with a little bump in the fabric from the wood that I could not get rid of. It’s certainly a delicate one isn’t it. I think the clips are probably better for fabrics such as this but otherwise pins all the way for me 😊 Thank you for watching xx

I definitely go with the nearest shade for overlocking thread, and sometimes the nearest thread is proximity wise as opposed to colour wise 🤣

Lovely video 💕 I recently bought one cone of rainbow overlocker thread. I use it for kids clothes mostly. For my own garments I have black, navy, white, grey and rasperry pink. This covers 95% of all my memade clothes 🤣🙈 if I have a fabric that doesn't match I always use grey because it is a great neutral and blends in very well 😊

Beautiful sweater. Love the color. I am not a fan of things tight up against my neck either.I really need to learn to use my overlocker to actually sew and not just finish seams. I don’t get how you know where the seam line is. For me it is a wing and a prayer when I am finishing seams in terms of how much I cut off.
@SecretLifeOfASeamstress
@SecretLifeOfASeamstress 2 года назад
Thank you! My overlocker has a seam guage on it so you can line up the edge of the fabric and you know that you are taking a 1 or 1.5 seam etc. You could maybe mark with a chalk pen or something so you know where to sew? It is scary at first it took me a long time to try too but it's so much quicker than sewing twice :) x

I don't do well with my make 9 either. I love planning but I don't like following through. I get distracted by so many other lovely things. I also don't use clips very often. I have them but forget that they are there. I grew up using pins, and clips are something new to me so I don't even give them a thought. I bought the toaster sweater pattern and want to make the same version as you, out of some Ponte that I bought just for that purpose. Its a thicker ponte so I hope it will work, but I also want to make it a bit shorter because I'm hoping to wear it with my skirts. I'm 5'10" tall, so I don't know how much to take off, if any at all. I'll have to wait and see. Its nice to see how quick and easy it is to make. Yours looks really pretty and cuddly.
@SecretLifeOfASeamstress
@SecretLifeOfASeamstress 2 года назад
Yes I’m exactly the same with the make 9 I think a year is too long to plan in advance for haha! I’m sure a ponte version will be lovely I wouldn’t have thought you’d need to shorten much since you are taller it will come up cropped anyway but check the finished garment measurements 😊 Thank you so much for watching xx

Hey there. Yep, I’ve sewn the toaster up last year in a very stable fleece knit which is super cosy. That said I did have to grade to my hip measurements as currently the toaster only goes up to XXl but I do believe it is in testing for the curve sizing. I just use whatever is on my overlocker most times but sometimes I try and match the insides of the fabric! Also for organising my cut projects I use a4 zip up pouches from amazon. I label them with a strip of scotch invisible tape and write on that with permanent marker what it is
@SecretLifeOfASeamstress

Hi Emma - thank you for the info about threads and storing projects you sound very organised. A fleece toaster sounds lovely I bet that’s super cosy. I have to say I can see why people get addicted to this pattern it’s such a lovely sew! Thank you for watching xx

I have just bought my first overlocker and am having the same dilemma about thread. I’ve not plucked up courage to make a garment fully on the overlocker as I like to be able to adjust the fit as I go and just use it to finish the seams. I do need to take the plunge though and go for it! I had to reduce the width of the cuffs on my Toaster and the height of the collar. Love all your makes Sally.
@SecretLifeOfASeamstress

Thank you so much for watching! Good luck experimenting with your overlocker, it took me a long time to get the courage to sew directly on the overlocker too but once you get used to it it makes everything so much quicker. Thank you for watching xx

Pins for me all the way 👍🏻. I made the Toaster and managed to get the fabric jammed in my overlocker 🙈 - I’d gone the other way as my fabric was too thick! It was my first time sewing with knits (I also managed to put the collar on back to front! ) 😳. I’ve since made the Billy sweatshirt dress and it was fine. I’m going to make another Toaster for myself with regular sweatshirting 😀.

honestly... your way of storing the pieces that are ready to sew is so much more neater then my way. I just leave it where I cut it... and make a big mess, hoping I dont loose anything. To my defence, I keep the pattern paper pinned to the fabric until I use it so i don't get confused with what is what... I am a right tornado in the middle of a project.

I got those envelopes too and find them a total PITA. when you have a bunch of them and you try to slide one in between two already in your box the new one catches on the popper and won’t slide into place unless you put your other hand in and make sure you cover the popper first.

The Toaster is my favourite but I always make the other version. I have a few, it makes up well in French terry and, in general, it’s wonderful to work with. My projects in large ziplock bags. A bit slippery and not easy to stack but I like them. Overlocker. Black, white, red, navy,grey. Sometimes I change the needle thread to match but rarely I haven’t sewn this version but just had a look at the cuff pattern piece on the layout in instructions and I would say it could be on upside down. The pattern and drawing of the cuff is definitely cone shaped with narrow edge at fold.? Maybe it was difficult to cut that fabric to shape?
@SecretLifeOfASeamstress
@SecretLifeOfASeamstress 2 года назад
The other version does look lovely, I can see it in a stripey French Terry that would be lovely. Thank you for letting me know how you store your projects and about your threads I find it really interesting to know. I think you’re right in that it was difficult to get the shape definition in this fabric, it probably would have been obvious in something more stable. I still haven’t decided whether to leave them or try to sort them out - we’ll see!! Thank you for watching xx

The cuffs are meant to be tapered at the wrist edge. I would check the pattern, perhaps you folded them incorrectly or sewn them the wrong side, even though your fabric is drapey they should still have a cone effect. I think it looks nice in that fabric.
