Just finding your channel. Your explanation about how/why you wound up living in France was so endearing. As I listened to you searching for the words to say about it, I thought, "she got to Paris, and she found that she was home." "America is my country, and Paris is my hometown". Gertrude Stein
🌞great video! Would ever want to show us your fabric stash and patterns? I’m from Canada an also love Blackbird fabrics! Haven’t checked out closet core fabrics but will now!
Thank you! Yes, I've thought of showing my fabric stash - especially the ones that have been languishing in my stash for years in case I can get help with ideas! 😊
Thanks for your interesting chat. I travel to France once every three years from New Zealand and I do an online refresher in French before I travel. Each time it gets easier. Tres bon!
☀️ Bonjour !
Well done for making France happen! All that hard work and bureaucracy paid off. I know what you mean when you find a place where you simply belong. So happy I have discovered your channel recently. I have already bought the Sauvie Sundress pattern, the Brene top & the Wanted Top. My French to translate the Wanted top isn't as bon as I thought it was hahahaha. Keep up the good work. You cram into a week what most get done in a month.
Oh, thank you so much for your message! It has made my day 😊 Those are some really great patterns that I wear all the time, happy sewing! And don't hesitate to message me on Instagram if you have get stuck making the Wanted Tee, I'd be happy to try and help!
Congratulations on surpassing 1,000 subscribers! There is no doubt that your channel will grow even further. I've loved watching each of your videos and this was a nice way to get to know you a little better. Your makes and style, and the way you present them in your videos, have inspired me to embrace my love of skirts and solids. I too love the heather dress. I made one last year and have another on my cutting table. I love the fit in the bodice and the neckline is perfect for me. I'm in Canada and studied French through school and for a year in University. I've always regretted that I didn't go further. I was able to get by (barely!) on a visit to France in the 1980's. I'm 60 yo now and hope to travel to France to attend an immersion program and do some travelling within the next couple of years. In the meantime, I'll look forward to your next video!
Thank you so much! The heather dress is truly versatile, I'm glad you love it too! I do hope you get to come back to France again and an immersion program sounds really interesting!
Ok. Everything about this video was great. I’m finding emotional feelings about your evolvement into the French life. I have always wanted and felt the desire to learn French, for just the reasons you spoke of. I also was encouraged Not To. The desire is even stronger now. So, as of today, I will begin to learn French. It will probably be very ugly as it has been 45 years since my original desires were derailed. Thank you for helping my realize my longing needs to be acted upon.
This message makes me so happy! Remember to be patient with yourself and know that learning a new language is tricky and can take some time, but is entirely possible! I'm rooting for you 😊
☀ I'd love to see your sewing space in a future video. Also, would love to know what kind of machine(s)you have and whether you use a serger and/or overlocker. I have really enjoyed your videos and am building my future sewing project list based on your fall video. Thank you so much! Au revoir!
Thank you for your feedback! I've been thinking about doing a sewing space tour, but it's not finished yet! We're still furnishing our new house after moving in about a year ago (furniture is expensive!) and I still need to figure out how to store my fabric and patterns (still in boxes 😬). But I will eventually, promise!
☀️☀️ I'm enjoying getting caught up with your videos, having just subscribed. I see some of your clothes are similar to what I wore maybe 30 years ago, and they look great on you. The swing skirt with a diagonal front seam for instance. I look forward to watching more of your makes.
Finding the right fabric is such a struggle. I love your response to "why France." I think many of us who travel experience this feeling somewhere in the world. I have anyway. But to follow that feeling is really something special. Very inspiring. 🌞
☀️☀️☀️ I loved hearing about your love of France and the French language! I live in Sweden and English is our sort of second language from a very early age. But as you, I loved French, it’s such a lovely sound and I did French for a couple of years in school. But I never got the chance to learn to speak it properly. I’ve been to Paris twice and I adore it! I managed quite well with the little French I remembered an English for the most. Thanks for sharing! ❤️
It was lovely spending time with you hand sewing! That was actually very inspiring. I love hand sewing. I've never done it but maybe hand sewing would be better for gathering? I use my serger for gathering always. You can set your differential to 2, long stitch length and it gathers while finishing the edge. Some use clear elastic to gather but that never works for me! A great online platform for learning a second language is Duolingo. I learned esperanto with it. It makes learning a second language actually fun and it's not expensive at all.
Hello and thank you, I'm so glad you enjoyed this video! I've never tried hand sewing for gathering, I always use a regular, long stitch on my machine. Your serger tip sounds really useful! I don't have one, but it's tempting to buy one 😊 Duolingo's great too! My friends and family are now using it to learn some French before coming for my wedding in May and it's really useful for them!
I found your vlog when I was looking for reviews of the Traveller's Coat, and now I'm working through all your videos. Your content is excellent, your presence sheer delight. Greetings from Vancouver, BC, where I live mere blocks from Blackbird Fabrics. I swear, whenever I'm walking there to pick up an order, my heart lifts and I feel joy coursing through my veins.
Thank you so much, I’m glad that you enjoy this channel and welcome! I admit, I am very jealous of your proximity to the Blackbird Fabrics warehouse, although I would probably go bankrupt if I lived nearby! 😂
My least favourite parts about sewing: putting together pdf patterns 😖 cutting out 😡gathering🤢 interfacing 😭 sewing in elastic neckbands 🙄 choosing a size 🤯. Changing threads on my overlocker 🤬 Maybe I should concentrate on just buying fabric - thats my favourite part 😍😍😍😂😂
Glad I found this. Your backstory on how you came to live in France is fascinating. I grew up in a French Canadian family and my French teachers always got a kick out of my accent. I agree, Paris is a wonderful city and you're fortunate to live there. I wonder if the great fabric stores I visited in the 1990s are still there. Your sewing is quite skilled and I love your choice of patterns and fabrics.
Thank you so much! It's been such a long time since I've heard a Canadian French accent, I love listening to it! In fact, my very first time in a French-speaking place was when I went to Québec city with my friend and her family when I was 12, and it's one of the reasons I absolutely wanted to learn it! ❤️
☀️ Hello Sarah, great chitchat video! I love getting to know the people I follow as well. Interfacing is boring I agree, and the outcome is often unpredictable 😬... 👋
I have just discovered your channel and am working my way through your previous vlogs. I love your natural delivery style, and the information you share about the patterns and fabrics. I am sure that you will get many more subscribers x
🌞🌞 congrats on reaching 1000 subscribers 🥳 it was interesting hearing about France and also where you buy fabrics. I live close to Montmartre and often by coupons but not sure it's the most sustainable as I often have fabric leftover. Funnily enough I'm also an English teacher here. I'm not sure what your main job is? Perhaps you could speak about that in the next video 😊 Looking forward to the other videos too on your essential sewing tools. Good luck with finishing that hem! 😁
Thank you so much! And hello fellow sewist in Paris! It must be interesting living near Montmartre - I've always lived in the east or south of Paris and Montmartre just seems so romantic (and great for the quads 😂)! I work in publishing and I'll definitely be talking about that more in the future - I travel a few times a year for this job and I plan on making videos on that too 😊
@@Sarah_Naomi Oh your job sounds so interesting. Can't wait to hear more about that! And as for my quads, they don't get as much exercise as you think 😂 I only live about 20 minutes by foot from Montmartre (in Saint Ouen) but usually take the metro 🤭 Looking forward to the other videos you have in store for us 🤗
☀ Sun for you, although I love ☁s a ton! :-) I only just discoverd your channel and am excited to see more of your sewing. It looks gorgeous so far. Also, thank you for motivating me to try once more to become fluent in French. ❤
Hello, that was lovely I so enjoyed hearing your story. Congratulations on passing 1,000 subscribers I have a way to go yet! I have only ever lived in my hometown and even studied Open University when my children were small so I didn't even leave town for that, so I am so inspired by your move to a country that has always delighted you. Well done on following your passions. Take care.
☀️thanks so much for the lovely video, it’s great to know more about your personal story and I feel like we are so similar! I bet the hem of your skirt is now finished, well done trying to sew it while answering questions 😅 all the best 🌺
Thank you for sharing! I am curious to know whether you’ve had your colours done, and what your season or palette is. Also, your reaction to the question ‘why France?’ Reminds me of my own response to ‘why New York?’ (I’m Australian) It’s hard to articulate, but it’s beyond a ‘want to’, and more of a deep knowing that I’m ‘meant to’ be here. And the visa process🫣 Also, I was interested to hear you are an English Lit major. Me too. Appreciated hearing a little about your journey and connecting to a few points you shared. 😊
Thank you! I'm happy to hear that you share that strong, resonating feeling too and that you were also able to find a way to fight through immigration and stay! American immigration is a trial unto itself - bravo! 👏 I've never had my colors done and I'm kind of clueless about my exact palette and season (cool colors, but gold jewelry?). I really want to get a professional opinion someday. I'll share it if I do!
Thank you! I find them all over, it's quite common here in Paris in the fabric shops around Montmartre like Sacrés Coupons or Coupons de Saint Pierre. Online, I buy deadstock fabric from SoTissus, Mister Tissu, and The Fabric Sales especially.
