I have a ton of fabric for napkins for last year. Then I had a heart attack the day before thanksgiving. Oops. No home made gifts last year. I’m anxious to try this method and I don’t even have to leave the house. Now if I can find the placemat tutorial.
Oh my goodness Connie!! Yikes. You've really had a time of it this last year. Yes, please try this and let me know what you think. It's the easiest miter I've tried. And don't over do it!

Patty-Great tutorial. The focus on pressing is so important. Thanks for mentioning that aspect. I don’t care for ironing unless I’m sewing & then I don’t mind at all. 😉
Thank you so much Kathleen! Yes, I don't see people stressing the pressing aspect all that much. Maybe people just take it as a given, but I get a lot of beginners, and I feel like it's really important to stress the pressing to them. Yes, I LOVE to iron fabric and projects!! But not shirts! LOL
Vicki I just use the quilting cottons, but you could certainly use a blend if you are concerned about shrinkage. It's never bothered me. I sew all my placemats and napkins and table runners etc from quilting cotton. Any stable fabric should work fine for this. I hope that helps!
I’m currently making mitered corner napkins for Thanksgiving. I’ve made a lot before, but never saw the method you use. I absolutely agree with you on cutting, pressing and starching to be assured of a beautiful napkin. I’m anxious to try your method for the ones I will be making for Christmas. What I like about yours are eliminating the bulk from the corners. I always learn new and better ideas and techniques from you, even though I’ve sewed for well over 50 years. Not to be off subject, do you have anymore information about crafts, they are running 50 off classes till tonight, there is 2 classes that I would like to buy but can't afford to at this moment besides I own 39 classes I really should do those before I buy more, but do you know if they are going to make us buy any new classes? I'm not sure what the benefits of being a premium member is then. Do you think they will still let us into classes if we discontinue our membership, I'm living on a very strict budget, so I have dicide what to do
Hi Sherri! I really should do an update video. I don't know all the ins and outs of it. I do know that our forever classes are loaded up under our accounts now. The premium is my favorite because I like to have access to everything, and if you sign up for their email you can get offers for $5 for a whole year, which is kind of crazy. Not all classes are included as some teachers opted to have their classes offered as stand alone purchases only. I don't know what would happen with out membership, so you should ask them directly. I hope you can get the $5 annual deal and that the classes your are looking into are included.
That is wonderful Deloris! They are also a great gift project because you can make them and they don't take much room to store. Please share you finished projects with us when you have some made! I love to see what fabrics people use!!

Thank you!! I do hope you will give them a try! This project is great to practice cutting and pressing as well as straight seams. Plus they are fun to make. I use mine all the time and it really does save on the paper napkins which get expensive.
I have always hated ironing my clothes, but I love pressing my fabric for sewing projects! I dont know what happened either! LOL! I'm even looking at purchasing a new iron, with auto shutoff, since I can't seem to remember to shut mine off before I leave the room.
I know Tammy!! LOL! I don't know what happened. I'll wear wrinkled old tshirts every day, but my fabric is going to be perfect. I have a Rowenta I bought from QVC and it does shut itself off after a few minutes of sitting unused. But it's not like the fancy ones with the little pop up feet like I see on the big quilting channels. Those are so cool! I love my iron and it makes a huge difference in my projects. I also like sewing pillows and bags and zippered pouches and they all benefit from a good press.

You reminded me that I need a new iron. Also, I ve only used spray starch on white clothing can I use it on other colored clothing? In the past when I’ve sprayed it on color clothing it turned white and powdery...not sure why??
I could be the fabric type?? I spray this lightly on the fabric wrong side and it works fine. I've never starched my clothes so I can't really answer that question. And there really isn't anything like having a quality iron! I got mine from QVC. Of course!! LOL
So you starch it at the beginning right after you cut it I assume. I am new to ironing. I never iron clothes! I find it difficult to iron quarter inch folds. They come out crooked and I nearly burn myself So I sew a quarter inch with my presser foot or marks on the machine, and then I press along the stitch line. I will have to watch your video again . I like how you marked that diagonal line to sew the mitered corners. Of all the sewing I have been trying to do lately, sewing napkins has been my favorite! Fun and you can make them for so many occasions and gifts. I just made a whole bunch of cute Halloween ones for friends. I got to share my love of Halloween fabrics with my friends. And this is the time to use cloth napkins! I used to think it was for when you had holiday company, and I rarely do. But I use them all the time for myself and anyone who comes over now, because it saves on paper. And for a while you couldn’t even find napkins at the store! I rarely use paper napkins since I discovered sewing cloth ones.
I starch when I press the uncut fabric off the bolt. I always press that out and then I starch again when I press my cut squares. Pressing and proper ironing is super important to sewing and quilting. As long as you use the seam gauge to fold the 1" line you should be able to match the 1/4" fold over. I do think starching the fabric makes it a bit easier. But yes, it's easy to burn yourself! I do love this project!! And I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves napkins so much! Thanks for sharing Padma! I swear by the disappearing ink pen. I use it all the time and I always draw my lines when I can.
Oh, so you press and starch the whole yardage piece, and then again when you cut the napkin shapes. OK! The disappearing ink pen… Yeah, I marked some marks on some clothing I was making, and then said to myself, well, I am sure that I marked this piece! Then I realized what they meant by disappearing…! I thought they meant it would disappear when I washed it or ironed it. But it just evaporates!😃
Hi Peggy! I personally use quilting cottons. But I have also used linen which made gorgeous napkins. The ones in this video are just quilting cotton off the bolt from Joann. I have also used their fat quarter. I really enjoy this project and using cloth napkins. I hope you give them a try!
Actually the first part is important. If the fabric isn't cut just right or the pressing is not good, the napkins won't have good miters. You can skip that part, but if someone is not experienced with handling material, they will have trouble getting the corners right. I also did provide time stamps for people to find the segments more easily.
At first I thought what use do I have for cloth napkins? But then I saw how nice they are and with that matching placemat, super cute! So now I'm inspired to make some matching sets just for me. Why not treat myself? Such a fun project. And no more paper towel napkins.
I love using my cloth napkins! You can use fat quarter as well. But do make sure to square them up for cutting so you don't have any issues with stretch as you miter the corners. I use mine every night. Paper towels are still a little hard to get in the store here, so these help the paper products to last longer. I use the same one for several meals before tossing in the laundry. For company, I would use all freshly washed and pressed. I hope you will enjoy the placemats for sure!
@@PattymacMakes Fat quarters! If I make my napkins 17 x 17, I should have plenty to ensure straight grains. And I could do pieced placements, too. Mix and match! What a great way to try out quilt designs. Like making mini-quilts.

We are hosting Thanksgiving dinner and it occurred to me that we typically have dessert an hour or so after leaving the table and my lovely dinner napkins will be in the laundry…so, I’m making a smaller size napkin for dessert! I’m going to be a pro at mitered corners by the time I make all of these (6-8 each size)!!
@@karijohnson6542 What a wonderful idea Kari!! I do have an easier version of napkin that is simple hems if you're at all interested. They aren't as fancy as the miters though, and since this is more of a dinner party than a picnic, the miter is probably better suited. I'm so happy the tutorial is working so well for you!
@@PattymacMakes I’ve seen your other version and have made a few of those, but the mitered corners look SOOO much better! Have you seen the rulers that you can iron on/over? Dritz makes one (aluminum) but there’s a plastic version that I like better. It’s a lot easier than measuring with the hem gauge ruler. The plastic version starts with a “K” and I found it on Amazon.

@@PattymacMakes No; sorry. Not in quarantine now. I started sewing masks for family and friends in April 2020. I found sewing to be fun, so we invested in a new machine and are planning to rearrange a spare room to be a craft room, so we’re looking at videos of other craft rooms for inspiration.
Darlene, the set up is important to having good square joins at the miter. And I did timestamp the video so you can skip around if desired. I get a lot of people who are very new to sewing in general, so in some videos I give a lot of extra details. I take that extra time to timestamp so it's unfortunate you didn't take advantage of that feature. But I know some people are in a giant hurry and just want the end without the details that go into a truly successful project. The cutting and pressing is super important. My personal experience following the faster moving videos making this project is that leaving out the info on grainline, and straight cutting and pressing leads to results that are less than perfect, and the person at home is left wondering why their project flopped. I do take your criticism under advisement, and I'm sorry you didn't find the full explanation helpful.

Otherwise the miters are not as nice as they could be. It is hard making the videos because you don't want to bore the more experienced people but you also don't want to leave out the beginners. It's hard to know what's the best route. I do hope you'll try these napkins!! They are beautiful.
