The only reason, why I wanna sew my own clothes, is because when someone asks you "Where did you get that" and you can reply "I made it", that's the BIGGEST FLEX IN THE UNIVERSE.
i can just hear someone saying "Omg that dress is so cute where did you get it?" and ashley being like "oh, this dress *dramatic hair flip* i made it myself"
Lol I couldn’t have put it better myself! The jokes were on fire too! Fabric butt plug?! Bad sexy statute of liberty costume! Come on! It is incredible!
You picked SILK as your first sewing project from scratch? INCREDIBLE. I've been sewing for four years now (plus a few years in high school but that was eons ago), and I'm still intimidated by silk. Your dress turned out lovely! And if it makes you feel any better I just miscut some deadstock fabric that's sold out everywhere, so mistakes don't end with experience.. ;)
I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING, but then again I’m still a beginner and decided to use a thick stretch knit to work with to finish a sweater for my cat today 😹 I guess if you don’t jump in though you don’t learn all the tricks to working with different fabrics 🤷🏼♀️ if I were using nice fabric though I would def do a muslin mockup first I’d be too scared to mess it up
@@shoobop2057 anything really as for price I'd get something basic... The only thing I would buy is more needles. Some fabrics need different types of needles like silk needs a 10/70 needle if I remember correctly. I would research what needle you need for the fabric you'll use.
When she said "there's 3 minutes of your life you're never gonna get back" i suddenly became painfully aware that time is constantly moving forward and won't rewind itself and every passing second I become closer and closer to my inevitable death. What has become of my life
boomerang nebula that’s great, nothing wrong with realising the truth! It’s quite empowering I feel to realise the value this time/ life instead of being oblivious and having the illusion that they’ll last for eternity :)
Okay I am outing my age..I am 62, yes, and I love watching Ashley! I will honestly tell y’all when you hit 40, your attitude becomes “fuck it”...”I will do what I damn well want”. Just something to look forward to 😏. That doesn’t make me a “Karen”. Ash, you did good especially tackling SILK! I did flashback to my Home Ec days and 70’s polyester (shivers)...
she really has the audacity to be a literal film maker, a designer, and beautiful edit: i’m lowkey mad that the person who liked it for 420 didn’t tell me 😔
I just love that she’s digging into a fun editing style more, rly getting the most outta that degree. I’d be super excited to see more like this, whether that’s sewing or obscure childhood stories lmao
Been sewing for 10ish years. Hear me out: do NOT try to finish anything in a rush lol. If something isnt working out, walk away, do something else and come back. In an ideal world, dont get to the « sewing stress sweat » stage so you can make smart decisions lol I regret every stitch sewn after 11pm because thats when my brain personally checks out
Thank you for this! I've just started sewing and I'm always rushing myself. I'd love to be able to make everything in a couple of hours but I have to keep reminding myself to take it slow lol
I saw a little, mostly quilting which is sooo easy if I compare it to dress making. Every tip you gave is so true to my experience. I personally have to saw with natural light. Sawing at night is asking to much off my 👀 and brain. Sewing requires time time and patient. You really have to be mentally prepared to dedicate time and effort for the project so you are happy with the result.
the vintage shots, the beauty of the dress, the listening to betty, the immaculate hair, the ditching the shirt when the sewing got intense and the editing of this video really do it for me
God I'm so proud of Ashley. She went from filming videos in her small, L.A. dorm room with 5 other people and having to plan all if their schedules out so none of them had to see her film, to moving to New York, going to New York Fashion Week, having her own sophisticated, chic, kickbutt fashion style, and making her own damn dress! Girl is killing it, and I stan.
Lol I’m from NYC and I pray to god I see her one day. I’m also really into fashion and art so who knows 🤷🏻♀️ I missed NYC fashion week last year but hopefully they open for another one by next year
s k y p o p just a fair warning, choose a safe part to live and things can be expensive compared to other states! Also NYC is very overhyped, it’s really not that great. Also no need for a car, just take the subway, there is basically no where to park
Kierra Kim thanks for the advice! I have been wondering what New York is really like, and I hope ashley makes a video on all the pros and cons of living in in New York.
this girl,THIS GIRL. all my respect goes to her. I go to art school where i have to sew, its fucking hard and you need to have a lot of brains and patience to sew, so she is a literal superwoman in my eyes. If you don't know how to sew you will not understand the pain and anger. Anyways, slay queen ily.
hahahhahaahhaha...Haha.. hah..ha Just realised I don't have a life despite laughing when Ashley said "wasted 3 minutes of your life" for 12 minutes Ew looking back at my comment, its cringe I'm sorry
You could probably sew around the eye holes with a zigzag stitch until they're properly bound (to look like fully embroidered edges, like you would with a button hole) with matching thread and that would keep it together, look intentional and get rid of the entire struggle with the eyelets. All the tiny bits of extra paper from the tissue would also likely come out in the wash if it's too tedious to get every last scrap.
@@ahumanaperson You are likely very right, the most modern machine I have ever had that worked is thisold singer that's built into a desk, so I wouldn't know. Your way is probably even easier.
@@tirthavegda4136 As in instead of metal "eyelets", to bind those holes with thread instead, like you would with a button hole. but since she's doing it by machine, it's relevant to suggest she could try a zigzag stitch, because that's what people use when they don't have a special buttonhole function on their machine, since she probably doesn't want to do it by hand. She could reinforce the fabric with tissue the same way, and not worry about it staying in the finished garment after a wash.
ngl the nostalgia hit when she said “as a 12 yo with 5 brain cells on me, 4 of which were taken up by tumblr and other one of which were taken up by boys who i later realized were kinda mean”☺️✨
Oh honey child, NEVERRRRRRRRR sew when you are tired! Just learn to get up and walk away from the machine and do not come back to it until you have slept. And, I'm astounded that you have had such success on your very first make-from-scratch pattern - you look utterly gorgeous in it. I think the bigger eyelets add a bit of a punk edge to it which contrasts perfectly with the feminine fabric. Yes please, more videos of you sewing please Ashley. Thanks for ALL your incredible work, take gentle care xx
I’m a 20 year old college guy with zero interest in fashion, yet I’ve been looking forward to your sense of humor in your videos Keep up the good content
i hear you, i'm a 30 year old psych counsellor and have no interest in fashion whatsoever, but a lot of interest in ashley's commentary and awesome editing skills
THERE IS NOT ENOUGH COMMENTS APPRECIATING THE “I feel like I’m trying to preform heart surgery with a spatula” JOKE AFKJASKFJDFHD IM WHEEZING ASHLEY YOURE LITERALLY SO CREATIVE AND WITTY LOLLLLLLLL
I don't even mind that she doesnt post as often bc it makes me so goddamn happy to see "new video today" out of the blue and that I always KNOW the quality and time and effort is always there wow I'm so proud of her
dude it is always worth the wait so I don't even notice how long it has been, so when she said it had been months since she last updated I was really confused
I used the time she hasn't posted anything to rewatch all of her videos. Was really cool to look at her developement and how she becomes more and more mindfull and reflexive. It's so joyous and encouraging to see!
can we just appreciate how good the edit is? the transitions, the background music, and the whole vibe is just so aesthetic. Ashley improved so much over the years, this is such quality content.
I KNOW RIGHT. all of them is in the right portion and not being too much. Very decorative & detailed yet still have the values behind them. So freaking gewd.
I think all of us need to take a moment to appreciate the FUCKING HARD WORK this girl puts in all of her videos. I mean, I know she's upset because she hasn't posted in a month but honestly, quality over quantity? And for Ashley to take all the shots in all these different angles, the editing, the music selection, even the titles which are bombass just show how much effort she puts in. And she did that while she's all by herself in the global center of a fucking pandemic while also managing projects on the side! All I want to say is, you're doing your best Ashley and we love you for this. Please take care of yourself and ffs, start eating something if you're going to pull in so much work in a few days! PS Love the dress and the entire process, obviously. You're fucking awesome
Tips from a self taught sewing person: -watch as many tutorials as you can for all specific elements in your project like an invisible zipper -buy second hand curtains and tablecloth’s to practice on -don’t be afraid to change your plans if something goes wrong -always buy more fabric than you need to, you can always make smaller projects out of the leftovers Have a nice day😁
I am 72 years old. I might be like your oldest fan. I love watching you do stuff, especially now that you are in New York and have such a cute apartment. I could relate to your sewing project. I once studied a Slipcover Chic Book for a few weeks before I made muslin pattern pieces and sewed slipcovers from scratch for a loveseat and chair. One would think that since the right side of the sofa is identical to the left side that one might make sure that the pattern pieces are identical. But I didn't. Somehow it worked out anyway, just like your dress. Keep the silliness coming.
Dear bestdressed, You have inspired me so much and I went from wearing a hoodie and some sweat pants to wearing accessories jackets shirts skirts and all that you inspired my RU-vid channel and I always binge watch your videos I love how your funny cute and doesn’t act like there life is perfect so thank you for being you💖💕🎀🌸🦋
ashley, recently i’ve been crocheting and I realized that you are the best person to watch and listen to while crocheting. I just wanna say it’s fun to make something at the same time as you 🥺
can we talk about how wonderful the little fabric shopping montage was? that was really beautifully edited!! edit: i'm a bit further in the video now and wow the editing on this video in general is really aesthetic and beautiful. i love the way the retro editing fits the theme with the retro dress.
This is why Ashley's my favorite. Not only is the editing sequence here hands down the best I've seen by her, but Editing Ashley also pops on to grace us with her cute-ass piñata slides in the middle of the video. Like, seriously girl, the level of extraness & dedication to ur vids is high-key commendable. We stan Ashley so, so hard
@@bestdressed we appreciate your dedication so much!❤ and we don't mind when you take your time bc you have some of the best editing and video style on yt and it's worth waiting for
OMG that's so pretty. I would really like to see it as a series trying to sew different style clothes. I really want to learn sewing because I love altering my clothes.
Same reaction. Lady is AMBITIOUS! And she fookin' killed it anyway! I'm so impressed. *vintage silk in my fabric stash stares at me* O_O shhh, it's not your time yet... not ready to ruin that one. XD
A little advise. When you start getting mad, stop sewing. I've been sewing for 10 years and I have ruined so many things bc I kept sewing after I started to get frustrated 😂
I have this same rule for myself. When I get frustrated and continue to sew I almost always sew something on the wrong side and then cry while I take another hour of my life ripping seams. 😂 I was crying laughing during the zipper crisis because that was me my entire first year sewing haha
I honestly am so happy i stumbled upon Ashley's channel, shes so underated and she makes me feel better about how fuckin awkward i am. Her vids always lift my mood and shes the person on the internet i relate the most too. Love ya :))))
me: sees "silk charmeuse" me: dies the dress turned out great! that fabric is so pretty and i felt your struggle with the eyelets i found that heavier fabric is usually better for those otherwise it's a pain. also are those butterflies in your hair?? absolutely delightful 10/10 good looks
I've watched this so many times now. Like the music and the video itself is so aesthetically pleasing. I don't think i'm ever gonna get tired of watching this video over and over again
I aspire to be the kind of twenty-two year old who tapes insects underneath empty pots and leaves them there for ridiculous lengths of time, before being rescued by someone who's normal. Something about that willingness to inconvenience yourself in order avoid anxiety...chef's kiss
I miss you and the me I was when I first saw your videos. I would say I hope you're flourishing wherever you are, but I know that you are. Best of luck, darling 💞
Hannah Wicks But that’s so smart! In my own experience you can get terrified to work with a fabric too expensive. Old fabrics are usually of better quality and have memories attached to them!
can everyone just appreciates how much effort and time she puts in to this video. like the editing, the filming process, THE FREAKING SEW PROCESS, editing this video... everything is just perfection
That speech pattern is what I like to call "Pandemic slur." It is a dialect of English perpetuated from self isolation and forgetting how to English in the absence of peers.
Ah this is such a reminder to just everyone who may or may not read this that life goes through ups and downs, and don’t feel obligated to be on someone else’s time. Literally take time to heal and do the inner work 💓💓💓
Oh honey...! Go get yourself a zig-zag foot (to overcast edges if you don't have a serger), a zipper foot, a seam ripper, and some cheap fabric that you can do a test-run with before cutting into your beautiful dress fabric. There are lots of well-stocked notions stores on the same block and north (take the back lobby exit out of the Mood building) with EVERY SEWING THING you could possibly need. Thank goodness the dress fit. Nothing is more discouraging or kills the joy of sewing, more than seeing your time and $ go down the drain. Take care of your gifting. ❤️
Every budding seamstress(seamster for those sewing males) NEEDS a Sewing Big Sister or, as I had, a Sewing Godfather!(Godmother? Godparent?! Ooph!) What luck that you're local and willing to hand out helpful tips like this! It's so kind of you to share your knowledge.
@@nicischmidt7572 So glad to help. Also, there are plenty of reasonably-priced fabric and trim stores within a 2-block radius of Mood, where I'm sure a tiny-floral vintage-y silk print is waiting for her. Bring a foldable shopping caddy with wheels if you go. You're going to buy more than you thought...👗
As a christening gown designer and seamstress, I cringed for you when I realised you were using satin.... for your first proper sew!! It’s one of the more difficult fabrics to sew. Well done 👍
“I feel like I’m trying to preform heart surgery with a spatula” is literally going to be my life motto ✨edit✨ hate to be that person but thanks for all the likes omg
Some day in thirty years Ashley is gonna have her own fashion boutique in NYC or London and once in a while fans from her channel drop by to buy clothes and talk about their lives to her and she'll give you advice on not only clothing but also your life like a big sister
GAGAGAGAGAGA!!! I watched this video and it is really bad compared to my videos. GAGAGAGAGA!!! This is NOT self-promotion! This is the reality! This is the world! We are the people! Don't disl****ke my vide*****s, my dear atuey
Damn, I'm only like 4 minutes into the video but this feels like a whole ass music video. That editing. Thr music choice. Those transition screens. Pop. Off.
