Beautiful job! Quick tip: never sew over pins, you can break a needle and it can hurt your eye. Instead, there are clips you can use to put them together on the edge that can work or take the pins out as you go :) love this dress and you chose a beautiful printed fabric!

I also love how this came out, and I'm glad it came out so well for your first sewing project. Keep going, girl, you have a knack for this. You are a natural sewer.

Ok thanks so much Cat! I have done this! 😁 Several times I’m ashamed to admit! 😅 I’m so lazy! But it’s so frustrating to keep breaking that needle 🪡 and having to stop and put on another needle or worse the reason I stopped is because I damaged my machine and it was hella expensive to fix! Lots of helpful tips in the comment section 😊

I sew (and knit) all of my own clothes and I was grinning and cheering the whole way through this video. You did such an OUTSTANDING job with an ambitious first project. I can safely say that the thrill of being able to make all of my childhood outfit dreams come true NEVER WEARS OFF and I regularly get emotional when I finish something (oh, hey, that was me crying in a Gibson Girl blouse in my front yard yesterday). Being able to bring your artistic/stylistic vision to life in a way that is totally unconnected to what companies are selling as "fashion" is a superpower (plus you get all the puff sleeves and awesome fabrics you want). Also-- and this is a hot button issue- but I use fine glass head pins (Clover makes them, I think they're labeled "silk pins") and sew over them and it's just fine. (The sewing police do not like this but they aren't allowed in my sewing room ,anyway). Congrats on a fabulous dress!

My god girl you are so courageous. And love how your are so supportive of each other. That pattern is not a beginner level. Is there anything you can’t do. I love how this dress turned out super cute. A little tip for you try and get into the habit of ironing as you go it will help you with things like your pleats etc. your fabulous girlfriend x x x x

I am absolutely amazed at what you did! My "first garment" project was a skirt: cut two trapezoids, sew the sides up, sew the hem, fold the top over and sew a channel, put elastic in the waistband. You're out there making a fancy dress with two kinds of pleating and poof sleeves, not to mention interfacing and a zipper as well? I feel like I'd be too intimidated to make something like this and I've been sewing for years! What a great start to Spooky Season.

Sewing is an art form, I have been sewing for 6 years. I actually collected 4 sewing machines and an embroidery machine. I am still learning and feel like no matter how long you have been sewing there is something new to learn or they come out with something new to learn. I love making things for my friends and family. I don't usually make clothes though, I have made pajama pants and several aprons. Zip bags are my favorite thing to make. I am definitely here for this video. I learned how to sew by RU-vid, sewing Facebook groups, and books. Sewing also has it's own verbiage. It's an expensive hobby but very rewarding. Happy stitching. ❤🪡🧵

GIRL!!! As a maker of all things, it was SO MUCH FUN watching you both learn and grow through this! I have to tell you a story that my mother loves to tell, of when she was a newbie quilter, and brought her recently finished, intricately hand-appliquéd quilt into a quilt shop on her way to show it to family (she'd had NO intention of bringing it in with her, she just stopped at a shop on the way!) Anyway, long story short, one of the ladies in the shop informed my mother that she, herself had been quilting her entire life, and that my mother simply didn't understand that she was too new at quilting to be this good at it. Fact. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Sometimes, it's just in your blood. I implore you to try your hand at other fiber arts. Knitting and crochet are my typical jam, but I've been wanting to get back into sewing (and have a crapload of fabric set aside just waiting... and my husband and I tell people that I'm an artist, but mostly, my supplies are just sitting and collecting dust... maybe I should set up a camera again, too?) I love what you're doing. I love watching you grow. It all feels very early '00's @Threadbanger, but with your own unique flavor, and I am HERE FOR IT. ✂️🖤✨

You did a great job! You jumped right in the deep end with this fabric! I don't know that we can blame Joanns for the pattern piece not fitting. It is a problem with the smaller pattern making companies, I have found. They make and test their clothes for a very small size and then they size up the pattern without testing it. I've run into this problem before and I am sure we will again. Here's what I'd do in the future: take the front skirt piece and cut it so the middle portion is roughly a third and you have two side thirds. This is more seams, but the seams fall to the sides and looks more intentional. And then you have a 'gore' pattern piece that you can use to build future skirts. Does that make any sense? Anyway, the dress is beautiful, I love how the sleeves are poofy AND structured, and it looks great on you! When I think of that 'potential suit fabric' I just keep picturing David S. Pumpkins and I think it needs to be a thing (suits are very difficult to make, but so was this dress!).

Grats!! it looks great, kinda reminds me of my first time making a garment and then when a friend made her first outfit too, it's special. I'm going through a rough time and you saying at the end of the video "teenage me didn't think I was gonna make it to 25" felt like home, it means a lot to me today, thanks, seeing you get so emotional and excited gives me hope to go back to sewing and crafting soon. I'm warning you, now that you made your first garment, you'll need a new space for all the fabric, patterns and accessories you'll hoard

I just wanted to say that you are such an inspiration. You try things that are outside of your comfort zone and have never done before and you kill it every time! It’s nice to see someone real on RU-vid that shows the parts that they feel like they failed on or a part that didn’t go according to plan. It makes you more real and relatable and I feel like if we lived near each other, we would be best friends. I get your humor and your quirkiness matches mine. Just wanted to say that you did an amazing job on this dress and it has turned out SO BEAUTIFUL. Keep pushing yourself. I believe in you!💜🖤🥹

That dress is so cute and it looks beautiful and adorable on you! You did such an amazing job for your first sewing project! It looks like you’ve been sewing for a long time. Having to tape the pattern together was a big job in and of itself. I’ll give you a tip about your sewing scissors ✂️ only use them on fabric and yell loudly at anyone who dares to use them on anything else.. especially paper!😂 My grown kids still laugh about me chewing their butts out for messing up my sewing scissors.🤣 Great job, you should be very proud of yourself!❤

Yes I do this lol I may have traumatized my bf because he always asks "Are these sewing scissors?" before using any scissors in my house 🤣 Also a tip for when you cut, cut along the length of the blade to get a smoother line, rather than lots of short snips. I think those short snips maybe come from cutting your hair where it makes sense to be more cautious! You did an amazing job on such an advanced pattern. It looks fabulous on too 🖤💜🖤💜

Beautiful work! Usually I do a tacking stitch once pleats are pinned. Then remove the pins and run through the sewing machine. It stops the machine’s needle hitting the pins and breaking. Love the fabric choice and you did such an amazing job. Keep sewing it mean you get to have clothes no one else has that are exactly the way you want them to be x

I am so impressed with this dress. My mother is a good sewist, and both her mother and grandmother made a living from dressmaking. As a result, even though I know how to sew, I've always been nervous about really trying to do much sewing. I'm always worried I'll be judged for getting it wrong, and I've felt that I have to do things in a certain order, like 'make this project first, and then progress onto making that'. Meanwhile, when it comes to cooking I have often said that the reason I'm a good cook is because I am confident, willing to try pretty much anything, and as a result most of my cooking turns out well. It's the confidence that has helped. Watching your video really made me so happy because even though I looked at the pattern and thought "oh no way, that dress is way too difficult for a beginner", seeing you work through it all and keep at it is really inspiring. Even the most terrifying part of dressmaking - cutting the fabric! So whether it's the first time you've made something or the fiftieth, You've done a wonderful job and I hope you keep going. It is a beautiful result. Now if only I could get the guts to make something myself. Love your work.

You are so much braver than me! And crazier! I started sewing using my mom's sewing machine, just before the pandemic hit. I realized I needed to practice just so i could sew straight!!! Sewing a BUNCH of masks gave me that practice, but I STILL haven't sewn any clothes for myself. Wait there was a skirt I made a couple years ago, but that was a couple years before the pandemic. And the only pleats I have sewn were on masks, and I was not a fan. Well done, you! Oh and don't sew over the pins. It's like gambling. Most of the time you're fine, but if you hit one,you can break the needle, like you found out. The first time that happened it scared the bejeezus out of me!

Girl. You're stunning, inside & out, just had to say that. But also... I wish I had your confidence. I wanted to learn how to sew & I've only done some small projects & hemming. I really need to just get over my fear of failure & just do something already. LOVE THIS DRESS.

Super nice! If you want to keep using the pins, you can just pul them out rigt before it goes under the foot of the machine. Then the fabric stays how it should, without holding it.

I suggest watching a few you tube beginner sewing videos. They give tips on finishing ends and what to do with the needles so you don't sew over them but really for your first time...wow you did phenomenal!!!

I just had to pause at 5:20 to tell you that you are giving off eccentric art teacher vibes and I think it's wonderful. Also I have a sewing machine I bought myself for my birthday like a year and a half ago that I have never taken out of the box because I am intimidated so thanks for this it's making me want to take it out and try something!

You did such an amazing job! I used to sew all of my own clothes back in the day until it just became too expensive. If you find a pattern that fits you (and this one fits you really well) than you can use it again with different fabrics. This would look great as a non-Halloween dress too. Hint, I used to just pull out the pins as I went along.

I bought this fabric last Halloween along with another and since I'm going to school FT & working FT so my brain apparently overloaded and then shoved the Jo-Ann's bag in a corner. But you've totally inspired me to get to it ..... on my summer break. 😬😆
