I finished the Victorian ball gown for Mirah Lapidoth from Daniel Deronda! Watch me make a Victorian bodice for this evening gown, and then head to squarespace.com/SnappyDragon to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code SnappyDragon.
Making a Victorian ball gown has been one of my favorite historical sewing projects, and it's even better that this historical costume is for the Jewish main character of my favorite George Eliot novel. This Victorian ball gown bodice has been a dream historical dress for me and I've learned so much about how to sew a ball gown. I hope this Victorian ball gown tutorial helps you out with sewing historical clothes! The BBC Daniel Deronda movie is a great inspiration for historical costume, but it's set in 1876, which is a totally different era of Victorian fashion history than 1864-65 when the book takes place. Wearing a Victorian dress is a great way to put myself in Mirah's shoes, and getting to experience 19th century historical dress for myself through historical costume making.

Oh my goodness that method of marking darts is genius. I struggle getting darts to line up so much, and it never occured to me to just baste them flat and tighten like that. Definitely going to try that next time I have to sew some!

I know I'm not the first to come up with it, but I figured it out while I had a migraine and couldn't sew a mockup on the machine 😅

“The gown, perhaps deliberately, was not described - but I’m sewing one for her anyway.” If there’s one thing you _can_ assume about most literary characters in most scenes, it’s that they’re wearing clothes, and if they’re not described you can generally assume that there’s nothing particularly remarkable about the clothes.

This gown is absolutely beautiful. The color seems unassuming until the light hits it. Did you choose that on purpose for Mirah’s characterization? Also, “Jewish impudence”!? Oof. I’m not Jewish but I can imagine how much that hurts. I’m a shy, anxious femme presenting Latine, and the “Spicy Latina” stereotype keeps popping up. Poor Mirah. I’m so glad that the novel is kind to her.
@SnappyDragon
@SnappyDragon 2 года назад
Thank you so much! This color is such an interesting one to film. I chose it because I fell in love with it and figured something that would work on Mirah (described as a dark-eyed brunette) probably wouldn't work on me, but I love that explanation and I'm going with it :D George Eliot seriously impresses me with her ability to accurately write the sort of microaggressions that people usually only notice when they're on the receiving end. We need more authors with that sort of ability to write the experiences of people different from themselves.
