I needed a new dress to make for an upcoming costuming event. Next thing I knew I was making a super fancy ball gown from the 1840s. There were a few hiccups here and there but I think the finished dress turned out great!

I hemmed a friend's silk wedding dress by hand by hanging it from a chandelier, the dress was on a coat hanger, which meant that the bulk of the dress wasn't on my lap. It was quite easy to heam that way. If you put a hook in the ceiling of your sewing room you could do the same thing

Lol I've been using the rotary for years and I can distinctly remember multiple snagged fingernails, a couple sliced thumb pads and at least one hair trimming! But what's sewing without a little danger, eh? 😂 thanks for watching!

I am STILL heartbroken that we had to postpone, even knowing it was for the best. It's particularly hard since I now see what I missed. THIS AMAZING DRESS! It is absolutely beautiful Dixie. I also really appreciate "Mockup number 76". I'm making a Regency bodiced petticoat (that no one is ever going to see) and have been making mockups for two full days. TWO DAYSSSSS Fingers crossed that we will gather in the near future. I am amazed at how you linked all the footage at the end! I must know how this magic is done. :) Thank you so much.

Honey, I’d stick that copy shop pattern on a usb drive and head over to a copy shop and save the time. B&W copies are like a buck or two where I live. I’m lucky though, I work for a construction company and we have a large format printer so I’ve printed 36” patterns for free. That’s a gorgeous gown. I love the color!

Your finished dress is lovely! That vintage red ribbon is especially charming, looking forward to your video on making the headdress. The 1840s can be deceptively difficult and you managed the silhouette and trimmings very well!

Use the tarlington just for about 10 to 12 inches height of the hem line and use a softer, lighter lining for the rest of the skirts. It is much like adding horse hair braid on a hem for stability. The dress turned out gorgeous.

Gorgeous and a happy coincidence for me- I've been looking at silk baron to find a nice shade of brown and dark red to make plate 5 in Eighteenth-Century French Fashion Plates! Looks like you did my homework for me as those look awesome together!! Great job as always!

What a beautiful dress! I’m not a brown fan but I would not call this brown. It’s more of a beautiful bronze. I see golds in it as well as the red and the red trim just sets it all off. Red is one of my favorite colors and an absolutely perfect trim for this dress. It looks fabulous on you and you should be very proud of it. I know it must be disappointing not to be able to wear it for your event. BUT look at the good side, when you do have an event you will not have a mad rush to finish a costume for an event. Although, if you are anything like me, you may decide that it’s a great opportunity to make another. I really applaud you ingenuity in overcoming some obstacles as your plans change or the pattern or construction changes your direction for you. Just one piece of advice. I know how expensive silk is and just fabric in general but always order some extra fabric. Especially when using an historical pattern. They are sometimes difficult to interpret or just plain wrong and you may need to cut another piece. I once cut out a dress and did not realize that there was a different sheen to the fabric until I had the bodice put together and tried it on for fit. Luckily I only had to re-cut every other piece to make it right but it was really fortunate that I had ordered that extra yard of silk. Stuff happens. All the time. You know you’ve become a seamstress when you figure out the mess so that you beautiful dress doesn’t get added to the UFO pile. And yes I “pile” too. I’m learning to fold parts together (bodice, skirt, sleevils, etc.) and put them in a plastic bin. But they WANT to be in a pile and somehow they just get there on their own. At least that’s what I tell myself when I realize that there is a dreaded pile again. I know they just jump on the bed when I leave the room.

Me, too! She's one of the few that shows actual frustration AND the problem. I almost feel like, if she can do it I can too (not true, LOL, that's like following a Bob Ross painting show) but I've tried hand sewing hems and it's impossible without TONS of practice. I'll stick to embroidery and leave the costume-period-sewing garments to the pros.. I'm just SO happy me watching means she can make money! That's cool.

Something I've noticed other historical sewer's doing is using a small amount of tarlitin along the bottom to hold the fabric out so you dont have to line the full skirt

Im working on my version of an 1840s ball gown and the skirt is attached to a straight waisted strapless bodice on the interior while the pointed bodice is on the outside and is snug on my shoulder blades, basically making my 1840s dress easier to make for me and I get structure from the bodice itself. And I made it out of Neoprene and I have basically built an inner corset that hooks closed in the back.

Not sure if this is just a RU-vid entertainment choice or not, but sometimes your videos remind me of when I realized that I have ADHD. Getting distracted and forgetting something, or getting distracted and accidentally doing something the wrong way, or generally getting distracted... But also hyper focusing and being kind of obsessive when I start working on details, or not even noticing what's going on around me because I'm too focused on something. In retrospect I've had that my whole life, but the pandemic and a few other things just destroyed all the coping strategies I had. At least realizing it kind of helped me deal with it, not like everything is instantly amazing but I feel like I at least know what's happening sometimes. It's not that I can't pay attention, it's just that I can't always choose what I'm paying attention to.

i'm anxious bc of how she's holding it, it has me worried she might still get cut even thought there's a "guard" - there are different sizes of rotary cutters much like scissors so you can get more precision

Like, if you're Google searching Berthas for research? I'd try searching along with other relevant keywords like Victorian or 1840s/50s/60s or ballgown bertha.

@@judithcollins3744 this is late, but it's an anglicism of the French word berthe, meaning the exact same thing. as for why the french called it une berthe, idk. best theory is that they named it after a queen Berthe who was known for being modest.

Oh please please please for less than $20 by a glove when you’re using a rotary cutter. If you think you’re not gonna get your hand cut weight you will. Please buy gloves
