Hello! I'm sort of between big projects right now. Finished with my summer wardrobe, gearing up for my complex 18th century pieces, clearing out smaller projects in the meantime. So I thought I'd do a Q&A while I work!
FABRIC RESOURCES:
Spoonflower shop for my designs: www.spoonflower.com/profiles/...
Burnley & Trowbridge for reasonably priced linens/wools: burnleyandtrowbridge.com/
Fabrics-store.com for a wide selection of linens:
fabrics-store.com/fabrics/lin...
Mood (I do find deals there every once in a while): www.moodfabrics.com/
I usually buy my silks from this Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/shop/siilkfabric...
Etsy is great for finding a wide range of materials: www.etsy.com/?ref=lgo
I occasionally find good cottons on this site: www.onlinefabricstore.com/use...
I shop locally for basics as much as I can. Notions, cottons, buttons, etc. Unfortunately the only stores I have locally are Joann's and Hobby Lobby. I shop whenever I travel and give myself permission to stock up if I find a good store with deals.
Vogue Fabrics in Chicago (they do have a website to shop from, but the prices were much better in-store): www.voguefabricsstore.com/

Please don't compare yourself to the Closet Historian. I'm pretty sure she's superhuman. It is nice for us regular humans to see one of us on RU-vid, too!

She was also a professional production seamstress which probably helps with just the pure stamina of sitting at a sewing machine for long periods of time

Yeah I'm lucky if I make more than two things in a year! (And each thing will be like. a shirt. a pair of stays. not an outfit.) Comparison doesn't help anyone, we should be proud of what we make!

To anyone who would criticize a printed stomacher, you just told us that you have never embroidered a large project by hand. I love embroidery, and I never sit down to listen, watch, or chat without work in my hands. It takes forever! Let us remember that the details we take for granted were once only available to the wealthy.

Same! It definitely changes over the years, and gets maybe a little less giddy and smoochy, but 100% more than balanced out by the depth of the relationship and your skill in understanding each other and maintaining the relationship. If both of you are working together to make it stay good, it totally can get even better.

"I think that self-sufficiency is something that our ancestors valued for literally thousands of years and it only took about 2 generations to completely wipe out entire skill sets" Wooow, that really hit for me. I've also always had that fascination with people like Little House on the Prairie. It's cool watching you work toward it yourself, showing the ups and downs.

I just watched the two latest Closet Historian videos and I think, she gives all of us productivity envy 😆. But don't forget, that she doesn't have a house and garden and animals to take care off. Nor is she married, with all that comes with that. And for what it's worth, I thought your mini series about optimising the design process for your personal wardrobe was a more valuable addition to the online sewing world, than just yet another garment tutorial. So well done. You might not have cranked out a lot of content, but what you did publish, was well worth watching!

five years in a marriage and more in love every day. we’re both in therapy, we talk about difficult topics, there was a lot of painful growth to go through, especially for him, but being together and being happy was and is a driving force and a goal. (it was harder for him because it was customary in his family to avoid talking about problems as much as possible and be passive-aggressive. he had to unlearn it and learn healthy ways to communicate and resolve conflicts in his late 20s-early 30s)

Not the Gunnar Deatherage shade 😂 but no, I totally agree, he pumps out those patterns so fast, but they would really only work on a dress form
@MariahPattie
@MariahPattie 10 месяцев назад
he's just the first one that came to my mind, but it seems like every tiktok/reel/short creator all use the same dress form. Draping patterns is super easy when you barely have any curves to deal with! But then when you size-grade up from there, the patterns get more and more unrealistic for your average curvier person to work with.
@doglover1neo
@doglover1neo 10 месяцев назад
@MariahPattie the thing is it's because it's the cheap display form. You can get those for $40 on sale at Jo-Ann's or you can pick them up used. They are not meant to be draping forms. Obviously because it's highlights to look optimally the best. But real dress warms don't actually look like that he just being cheap and easy. And it's fine if you're close enough to the measurements to that display form that it will work for you. It's not good enough to make an actual product off of. Especially when you see a lot of these videos with that display dress form use they don't actually finish making the dress for someone to wear it's always on the dress form. So don't get to cut up on that. Do be upset that people are using it for a final product and expect it to somehow magically work for real human bodies outside of a very select few. But there are dress forms whether it's p mg, who do carry human shape dress forms, including plus size. That are on the inexpensive side and there are companies who will make a full-on 3D digital version dress form a custom physical dress form to that size but it costs thousands of dollars. So go beyond the lookout for dress forms on sale and try not to fall for these stylized display mannequins. Because they're very inexpensive and they look pretty but they're not realistic. You can tell because they typically have a unibu their rib cage goes down into a cone shape and then they have hips but once you really look at them they're not very defined hips. I was thinking of someone who's been thousands of dollars on actual dress forms with back rolls. You can find better ones than this stupid display forms because they're so cheap they're popped out real quick. And yes the several thousand dollar dress forms are extremely nice and definitely worth it because a lot more work goes into them to make them usable as a body double compared to typical dress forms. But there are not in most people's budgets for the available standard versions let alone the full-on custom versions. But do you look up for second-hand ones you can find them for relatively cheap, so a few hundred dollars versus several hundred dollars or $1,000.

Love your channel. I grew up on a farm with milk cows, chickens & gardens. My family had approx. 100 acres. I now live in another state on my own farm of 5 acres. I have chickens, bees and a garden along with fruit trees & bushes. I will be getting goats & sheep. I can only support a few of each on 5 acres. No room for cows. Even with rotational grazing it's gonna be tight to care for all the animals I'd like to have. Buying winter hay & feed is crazy expensive. Consider all those challenges before you acquire animals. I'm sure you will be a great success in you endeavors. Continued happiness 💖

And don't feel obligated to share if you don't want or aren't able to. The important thing is to do it if it brings you joy. 🥰 I hear you about your experience with homeschooling making you want to do it right. My brain is wired the same way, so this makes total sense.😅 It still warms my heart to think of how you and Caleb were reunited. #hopelessromantic I love what you said about there being less to compromise on the more compatible you are, and that makes a lot of sense. On the cow note: you should look into Irish Dexter cows. They are a miniature, dual-purpose breed that produces nice, lean meat and rich milk. They are very hardy, diet-wise, similar to goats. My family has a 20-head herd (25 if you want to count this spring's calves) and we have been very happy with what they have provided us with for the past 12 years.

Marriage is a partnership, and it really pays to actually like the person you’re choosing to partner up with…which is where I personally think a lot of marriages fall over. Attraction and love is a good selling point and good for the short-term stuff, but genuinely liking someone is a lot more useful in the long term if you are going for long term. For context, I genuinely like my beloved, and we were friends for several years before making the leap to dating, which led to several more years of just vibing as is until we eventually got around to the wedding for my grandparents sake. Long story short, we’re going on 11 years married, and over 15 years together, and it changed nothing in the relationship; which is a decent metric for the relationship’s survivability in my mind.

The Closet Historian is very talented and an exellent patterning teacher! But as she points out, she starts most of her projects with *her own drafted blocks* made and perfected years ago. She very very seldom has do do any mock ups at all anymore, which is an enourmous time saver. Bekind to yourself. The homesteading/cottagecore fantasy is very much only a fantasy here in sweden. Small vegetable patches, fruit trees and the like is fairly common where I live, but the growing season is much too short and too cold to make self sufficiance anything like pleasant. My paternal grandparents were among the last small scale farmers in the area, any illusions died an early death 😉 I like learning the skills and keeping the traditions alive, it is good to know that I would be able to contribute should I be required to. But by all that is holy; I would prefer to not have to do so. On that note, starting out with a few goats or sheep is a good idea. Cows need a hellish amounts of feeding, like 1 acre per cow hellish. 😱 When my grandfather kept milk cows, my father tells me that the summer was pretty much dedicated to getting in enough hay to keep them fed the rest of the year.

OK, so I'm in Sweden so obviously different but I get most of my sewing materials at second hand stores. Sheets, curtains, table cloths. I think it largely depends on the age of your town. My city was a small midwestern town until about the 1970's when it started growing exponentially (you can see that in the architecture of the houses), but it never became particularly wealthy. Thrift stores just tend to only have newer, junkier stuff. Nothing old enough or expensive enough to be quality. But when I go to thrifting in other parts of the country, it's a totally different story.

When I buy fabric on line, especially if it is a basic that the vendor usually has in stock, I either request swatches right off the bat, or cut swatches when I get the fabric in hand. Then I put a note on the swatch (if it didn't come with one already) and put it in a binder. Then when I try to remember "Where did I get that really nice cotton batiste from... oh that's right it was from such and such.

You inspire me so much, the rate you sew it is so much more relatable and people sew at their own speed- I have recently also been concentrating on basics for a capsule wardrobe inspired by your video with the bodices. I have been married nearly two years and we have had our moments in the last two years but to be honest we didn't get issues either like people seemed to say we would. No shade to anyone who does, but thank you for being real about it not always being the case. Most of the people I know who struggled were newlyweds in their early twenties. I wonder if it is because by the time you reach 25 or older I think you know yourself well enough to be mindful of your body and knowing your needs and mind and are better able to communicate those to others too. Thank you :)

I was homeschooled from 4th through high school and my sibling started at 2nd and then re-entered as a high school freshman and generally I really think your reply to that question is really relatable. From my own experience with friends and fellow students, also as someone who did a few different forms of home-schooling, I definitely think public middle school is worth... skipping over. I never saw a destructive or negative issue with people who re-entered public school for high school and if anything it was a good "finishing school" process before going onto college, but there is something really, really toxic about middle school on a social level. Kids in elementary do fairly well across the board and then by high school things seem to even out again but there is something about the tween years that can be really, really difficult. All of my sibling's friends from the public high school didn't have it easy, but they kept reminiscing about how high school was socially/emotionally much easier to feel with then middle school, while often mentioning how they had more nostalgic memories of elementary school.

We have a small flick of chickens though and have spent the last 8 years that we’ve lived here adding veggie gardens and a fruit orchard. The four seasons cottage core bodice is an awesome idea. I made a pair of 18th century sleeves because I have a wool cape that is shorter at the sides for ease of movement and one day it was raining and I was fine (because wool) and then rain went straight through my hoodie sleeves. So. Yeah, no. I wear them all the time. Even with T-shirts. You could make some reversible sleeves in your colors to add to your wardrobe. And maybe have both long and short versions. :) Love the idea.

I have goats. Cows > goats. Goats are more work than cows. Their diet is complex, they're easy to get sick, and they need a lot of maintenance and attention. Still, its good to dip your toes and try goats none the less. You may love them. Some people do. Plus, if you can handle them, you can definitely handle cows from what I've heard lol. I actually sold all my goats aside from two for land managment pourposes. They graze our forest and keep it clear. If I had the feilds, Id have cows instead. As I am the same. I've always had an affinity for cows, and for my chickens of course!

16:31 I'd be down for an in depth discussion on homeschooling. I was homeschooled 4th - 9th grade and it was really good for me. I finally got myself diagnosed with adhd, but I think a lot of the success I've had in school was due to being allowed to spend those years learning at my own speed and in ways that worked for me. I went to a high school and basically sleep walked to valedictorian because I knew how to teach myself and... Gamed the system lol. I also have thoughts, and i think a lot of people homeschool for the wrong reasons, but the parents who do it because they're noticing that their kids aren't being served in standard schools tend to do really well by their kids. This is especially a growing trend for Black folks who are trying to keep their kids out of the school to prison pipeline and away from prejudice, and learning accurate history rather than American mythology. Racism sucks.

Re Canadian stores: its not natural fibers, necessarily but fabcycle in Richmond, bc sells factory ends, scraps from fashion industry, and try to keep that perfectly good waste fabric,and they have really good pricing and yes, they ship. Amazing communication. I have found natural cottons often. They just sell everything is all.

10:40 I'm new to watching her but I think she mentioned she used to work in a sewing shop for like 10-20 years. She's used to making clothes fast. You managed to spend a season wearing almost all your own clothes. That's an amazing accomplishment that's very rare right now 16:00 Omg, I've seen some stuff with home schooling as well. But, with how public schools are in the states and how often it's in the news, I think I would home school as well if I had kids. I met one kid that didn't know what soda was, super heroes, any fiction idea. It was weird. Wonder how he's doing now. My brother was also home schooled for 3 years because of behavior issues. My parents and him would blast through like all the math stuff in 3 weeks, take a few weeks break, blast through science, etc. That's how he learned best. If you do get cows (maybe could do this with goats?) it would be very interesting to make leather. I know people hate leather but most faux leathers are plastic and don't last nearly as long. Would be an interesting experiment waaaaay down the line Hmm..... A 3 week cycle.... I wonder if I could try that or a version of it with my schedule...

Oh and you can definitely do a pig on less than an acre if you supplemental feed some. We did and don't regret it! Helped to have a tractor to move her and do the big cuts, so idk what to suggest if you don't have access to one. Good luck!!

Mariah, glad you Don listen to those unhappy naysayers. In Nov I will be celebrating our 45th Anniversary. Our lives never changed. To date we hold hands, we listen to each other, we love our lives together. Forty-five doesn’t seem like forty-five, but rather like one year. Life is good, and I hope yours & Caleb’s will be the same😊

I've actually used printed fabric for that before, and it worked wonderfully. I won't be doing that with this stomacher though. I am saving to get an embroidery machine at some point, and recreating this design as an embroidery file would be one of my first projects.

We have both treadle machines and electric machines. We also raise pigs, chickens, turkeys, rabbits, and ducks with dreams of one day taking on milk goats. I've never been to the ball in st. Louis but the encampment I've have been to many many times since it's held not too far from where we live!

The wool you used for the petticoat looks like it has good drape. What kind of wool fabric is it? I have one full set of B&T samples to try and figure out which type I want to use. I have three plaids from Gordon but they are such heavy fabric. The one you used looks like it would make for a more comfortable petticoat.

I'll probably start with Nigerian Dwarfs. They seem like the easiest to manage. Later on I want to research and find the best breeds for milk/fat content. I know it's possible to make butter and multiple kinds of cheese from goat's milk, but the fat content is different and it's a lot harder to work with than cow's milk.

Do you know anything about that chair you're sitting in? I used to have a set that had the exact same carving on it. Although it was stuffed with horse hair one of the drawers that went in a cabinet was stamped with the word Victorian. This would indicate it was a reproduction. What do you know about that set?
@MariahPattie
@MariahPattie 10 месяцев назад
I believe these sets are called "Kimball" reproductions. They were made in the 1970's. I used to have a full set in burgundy upholstery, but I don't have room for it here so I sold it. A while later I found a nice single chair in green. They are pretty common on my facebook marketplace. Sometimes they are expensive, but deals come up occasionally.

A couple of thoughts on detachable and on heat. Detachable, NOT historically accurate, but a creative way to make something detachable is on "Shannon Makes" "Historically Accurate in Seconds with a transformable skirt." AWESOME! Heat: A damp towel on your neck, or water on any body part (spray bottle, soaked) will harness evaporation to make the heat not quite so bad. Re: YOU and Closet Historian: "Real" is always welcome, inc the real-ness of health challenges. I have them too, and it is a help to me to see how you manage things.
