Sears sold sewing machines for years, Kenmores. They were great sewing machines.

I learned to sew on a green Kenmore! I traded "up" for another Kenmore in the mid 80s and I loved that machine but I wish I had kept that old green one 😃

What great finds, especially all those buttons. I had those red, white, and blue ball buttons way back in the 70's. I remember using them, probably on a dress. One of the churches in my little town has a huge thrift sale every 2 years. Anyone can donate sewing, knitting, crocheting, crafting supplies. It's a great way to pass along supplies no longer wanted. Even after donated quite a bit, i went to the sale and came home with a few things. There were boxes and boxes of sewing patterns that was fun to go through. All the proceeds go to charity in Africa that helps Grandmothers rasing their orphaned grandchildren. I loved watching your dog checking things out. My best thrift find was 3 separate pieces of the same Scottish tartan complete with the store tags. I made a wrap coat, even the lining was thrifted.

Yes, I remember probably late 60’s, early 70’s Sears carried specialty fabrics if you didn’t find what you needed in the couple that were around. Don’t specifically remember buttons or other notions, this is around the time or a bit later that Nancy’s Notions started, she’s localish to us, she started out the trunk of her car, visiting different stores and individuals who had sewing clubs or something like that. Maybe later, but not by much. She also had mailers going out with her wares. A true pioneer. From a former quilter of 30 years, I do applaud your efforts to save an intact quilt, thanks on behalf of the quilter among us. Tattered beyond repair, sure, cut it up. That’s in great condition, probably 70’s, 80. There was a big resurgence in quilting at the Centennial year of 1976.

Great haul! I’d be most excited about the embroidery transfers. There are some treasures there that probably go back to the ‘60’s, if not the ‘50’s. The quilt ending up in a rummage sale is so sad. Hooray you’re going to use it!!

Great rummage sale finds!!! Yes, when I was a young girl in the 1960's, Sears had a whole sewing section in their stores. Where my mother always parked in the lot, we had to walk through the door right be the fabric/sewing section. The building doesn't exist anymore, torn down to put up a huge, modern condo and retail complex, but the memories of that Sears store are still fresh in my mind. My mother's first job was in that same store.

What treasures! You really made out on the buttons. I love getting lace like that for trims - you've also reminded me of a lace sweater that I'm getting rid of - maybe it can be upcycled! Great haul. xoxox

I do love a good thrift haul, even though I don’t do it much any longer… I was most excited about the buttons because it’s so difficult to purchase them locally, and I’m not driving an hour to a JOANN store, just to try and find buttons 😂xox

Ever seen button jewelry I saw a number of years ago and Berkeley California on telegraph Avenue. Where are the artisans used to hang out a lady with button jewelry and she had on a necklace it was expensive, but it was beautiful and it was all different buttons, but she coordinated colors. It was stunning so if your button overwhelmed necklace bracelet wow

Back in the day, department stores pennies seers even Macy’s had fabric department in California. We had a store called Marvin’s. They even had a beautiful fabric department. They carry patterns and fabrics home deck as well because those major stores would do made to measure curtains, and all kinds of things like that, but that’s a long time ago another lifetime ago.

Back when the majority sewed - oh wouldn't it be wonderful to have all of those options available to us today?

Great finds. I went to a museum on the Mississippi River recently and they talked about the pearl button companies that were in the small towns. One of the churches in our area holds a huge, multi-day sale in August. I always check for useable items, but after seeing this I will be looking for other items too
@SharonSews

That's so cool that you had learned about the pearl button company! Thanks for sharing that info with me.

I think the little crochets would look nice as patches in that jean jacket. I've seen someone wearing a jacket like that before.

I have had good luck at big church sales, not so much at thrift stores. Sometimes I think it lick of the draw, if you happen to stop in right when they get some great sewing related items.
@charlotteclark-calderon9733
I remember when Sears had a fabric dept (I was a little twerp). I bought my first computerized sewing machine from Sears (a Kenmore, of course)
@SharonSews
@SharonSews Год назад
Hahaha, a little twerp 😃 I knew they had sewing machines, but I didn't know they had a fabric department!

The button company single was a sample card. The price was $5.25 a gross. The green coat buttons from Sears are mid-late 1960's possibly early 1970's. Sears, like many other dept stores, sold fabric and notions for years. Most phased out by the 80's. Even Marshall Fields (based in Chicago) sold fabric.
@SharonSews
@SharonSews Год назад
Thanks Charlotte! After I filmed I looked at the buttons again, and realized the GR probably stood for gross and then you confirmed that! I thought it was a fun little find. You know it’s old when there’s no area code included with the phone number 😀 I knew Sears sold sewing machines, because I purchased one a Kenmore in the early 80s, but I had no idea they had a sewing department With fabric and notions. Thanks for watching them for sharing that great information!

I love love love vintage sewing supplies and upcycling. The floral button card looks like 40s. And I adore the big green sears buttons, totally my color 😂 Sometimes when I have no constraints (any pattern any fabric) I find my sewjo lacking. I really like the challenge of using up that last remnant of a favorite fabric or saving a well loved piece of clothing. Or taking, say, a Minnesota State Fair quilt panel and making a top 😊 Looking forward to seeing what you do with all of your treasures.
@SharonSews
@SharonSews Год назад
I do too! And I know exactly what you mean about lacking sew jo when there are too many options. That’s where I’m at at the moment… Part of it has to do what is going on behind the scenes in my personal life, but the other part is that I have so many fabrics and patterns to choose from and I don’t know where to start. Thank you again for that fabulous state fair panel… I’ll be showing it off in the future sewing chat video but I still have decided how I’m going to use it yet.

The last button you showed was probably for a shop owner. 5.25 GR, would be for a gross of buttons. Just my guess, not for sure.
