I need a new sewing table, and the city of Montreal is going to help me get one!
Come with me today as I scour the curbs, dumpsters, and alleys for one person's trash, soon to become my personal treasure! It's not exactly dumpster diving, but it's curb scavenging, and it's one of my favorite activities!
It's a great way to recycle and repurpose material, and most of what I find is going to go towards building a new sewing table for my craft room. That'll be the next video or two - building the sewing table, and then setting the rest of the room for sewing, crafting, and -of course- filming it all!

One thing I miss about being back home in Germany is the "Sperrmuell" days. My American friends called it going "junking". LOL One day a year where you can leave all your big stuff outside. I was always amazed at what one could find.. My mom and I used to go and look. Great finds!!!!
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Год назад
Ooh, that's a very fun tradition to learn about (and what are the odds that it happens in December or January, because that's when we always in Germany?!) We have an unofficial Sperrmuell day here in Montreal, and it's July 1st. The VAST majority of leases in Quebec finish on June 31, and that means that, in Montreal alone roughly 70,000 households are moving all on the same day, so you can imagine the absolute CHAOS of that day. And of course all the stuff that gets cleaned out/left behind at the old house/doesn't fit into the new house is left on the curb that day (and to a lesser extent, in the week following). So of course it's tradition in our house that, if we're in Montreal for July 1, Phil and I take the day and drive around and collect treasure!! But even when it's not Moving Day, one can still find plenty of good treasure if one's patient and keeps an eye out!

@@ShannonMakes simiarly, Boston has "Allston Christmas" over Labor Day weekend, when all the students move out/in and you can find anything you need at the curb. Also, a friend in Michigan told me that his town does an organized day when everyone puts out their big trash and folks are welcome to scavenge what they will. So it does exist SOMEWHERE in the world, if not still in Germany.

Oh, am I the first :D Great finds! I actually build a nightstand for my roommate last year and needed the exact same clasps. I ended up buying them because it didn't even occur to me to go looking for pieces on the streats that I could take them off (although I am usually always hunting on the streets for stuff :D ). Great tip! :)
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Год назад
Congrats on #1!!! The downside to street hunting is that, unlike this video where I got lucky, it can sometimes take a while to find what you need if you are looking for a specific object, so it might have prolonged your nightstand project. My sewing table is taking probably 5 times longer than it should because of this exact reason (but it's also costing way less, and is better for the environment, plus it makes me happy). Totally worth it IMO, but not always the best option depending on other project constraints!

I'm so so so glad we're in the same city again; we definitely need to go on some diving and thrifting adventures! I would have totally taken the head but I think Mr Owl has a hard enough time putting up with my dental cast paper weights LOL Edited to add that the basic pine IKEA bed and the old school bed slats are fantastic sources for reclaimed wood, so high five!
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Год назад
YESSSS!! Omg, if we're both here on Moving Day.... *scheming fingers* But yes, totally, there are a few pieces of furniture around my house that are made from IKEA bed slats, most notably the tables on both our balconies, but I haven't seen as many piles of those lately. I'm wondering if, with the price of wood, other people are finally catching on to how useful they are!?

haha yes, she loves to chase things, and that includes water droplets. So while she won't really go into the water just to swim and frolic, she loves to be "thrown" the water (or, even better, be thrown the stick into a lake, but here in MTL, those options are quite limited ;-) )

Gregory Maguire lived around the Boston area for a long time, and way back when I was taking writing courses, he came to speak (around 1996 or 1997) to one of my writing courses. He was very nice, and very encouraging, and I don't think any of us knew back then that his strange little novel would become a Broadway sensation and a whole series of books.

Yes, it was absolutely fantastic weather (although gotta get that corgi out rain or shine, and I *have* been known to pull in entire dressers and such out of absolute downpours... Wow, thanks for sharing! Clearly I haven't been walking around the right neighbourhoods! I'm still try to furnish my apartment (only semi-recently moved to Montreal for work), and I'm reluctant to buy new furniture since I prefer to give pre-loved furniture a new life and home. This walk through gives me some hope, though! With winter approaching, I'm guessing I'll need to find things quickly, though, yeah? Hmmmm... Thanks again!
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Год назад
Well the *best* time of the year to get lots of good furniture efficiently is definitely July 1st, aka Moving Day, but I find pretty good stuff all year round. I'd say 95% of our apartment is furnished from street finds, but a good tip is definitely (if you have enough time/energy to do so) to take things that are less than perfect, knowing they're a stop-gap measure, and just keep an eye out for better things to replace it eventually. Because (apart from July 1) it's hard to find enough street treasures to furnish a whole apartment in a short period of time... even just my sewing table (95% free and recycled materials) has taken me over a month just because I've been picky and have been waiting to *find* the perfect materials instead of just buying them #whyamilikethis Otherwise thrift stores are great too - Renaisance, Value Village, Petits Frères, etc
@AmoCultumAlo
@AmoCultumAlo Год назад
@@ShannonMakes thank you so much for all the helpful tips! I actually love rescuing items that need some restoration. Work just keeps me so busy that I can't always devote time to it haha. Still, I enjoy being able to make something truly my own and knowing that I'm helping to keep it out of the landfill. I'll certainly be on the lookout for things, and I guess I should broaden my walking area to increase my chances :) Thanks again! And I love you're channel by the way! I just found you (not sure how I missed you before), so now I get to enjoy catching up on lots of great content. Huzzah!
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Год назад
Yea, it definitely has to be a labor of love, cuz it's certainly not the easiest route, but it sure feels good! (and yes, I spend a couple hours/day walking, and almost always with a small repertoire of tools on hand too, so that doesn't hurt either :-D ) Glad you enjoyed the video, hope you have fun with the rest of the content! If you are looking for upcycle specific content, the Corgi Fainting Couch, the Tacky Cuban Pete, and the "One Robe To Rule Them All" (Bilbo Baggin's robe) are all nearly 100% upcycled... otherwise, most of the other stuff is pretty fun and goofy too, just less pure recycling focused!
