I haven't made one of these sorts of videos for ages so I though I'd share my sewing tools I wouldn't want to be without. These are the sewing tools and gadgets I use every time I sew and include my trusty purple thang, my seam guide foot, my silk organza pressing cloth, a corner shaper tool, my Janome scissors, my Janome embroidery scissors, wonder tape, my rubber ended unpicker, chaco pen and tailors ham and sleeve roll.
Let me talk you through how I use them and why I find them so useful for a multitude of sewing projects and reach for them every time I sew.

I love a good overhead lamp and a mini vacuum cleaner to clean up all the threads and bits of fabric. Not exactly sewing tools but it makes sewing so much easier for me. 👍👍
@SewEssential

both great ideas, we actually stock some really nice, bright lamps for that very reason and I love the mini vacuum idea!

I loved that you didn't just show the items but showed how to use them. I love my duckbill scissors as they make grading seams so much easier. I also like my pinking shears when cutting seams, especially with vintage garments to give an authentic look. A walking foot makes tricky fabric so much easier to sew.

Thanks Maureen I'm so glad that was helpful to you, yes duckbill scissors are incredibly useful. A walking foot is so useful and pinked fabric is certainly pretty too

My favourite sewing tools are my machines 😂 I had been using a very very simple sewing machine for many years but never really ended up making full garments because the results just weren’t worth the effort, time and money. Now that I have better machines the results are professional and I actually want to wear what I make! Life changing genuinely! I know that sounds extreme but having clothes that fit my unique body is honestly life changing… ❤

Great video, thank you. I love my bent surgical tweezers. Pack of 3 from AMZ. I have a pair by each machine (sewing, embroidery & serger/overlocker) plus at my cutting table. I also love my rotary cutters & creative grid rulers.

I like to use Roxann’s Glue Baste It or even just regular children’s school glue to hold zippers in place when I am making bags. I clip the zips in place, let the glue dry, and then sew the zip seams on several bags at once. Great for holding pockets in place, too.

I like a thin sliver of soap for marking, it doesn't wear off as easily as chalk, especially for beginner sewists.

Lucy if only I had seen the Janome edge foot a few months ago. I bought one from a site in US who claims to have invented it. I am sure she did but by the time I had paid postage the customs then again customs and delivery of the demand for customs payment here in France it came to almost €70. I also find the plastic side a bit wobbly. Aaaaaaarrrgghhh

I've been using an awl for gathering / pleating fabric. Recently, I've been using very sheer fabric and needed something less sharp asap. Found a blackhead remover tool and worked perfectly.

I have a little piece of plastic with cut outs with different measurements all around the sides which is great, I use it to mark hems etc. Another essential for me is a humper jumper so that very thick seams feed through my machine evenly.

Great video Lucy. I have most of those tools now after seeing them on your various videos, but I definitely need those scissors and the tailor's chalk tool - as you say the pieces of chalk are too chunky. My favourite is the ham - use it all the time 😊

One of my go to’s in an adjustable zipper foot. I use it for regular zips but because it’s adjustable I can move the foot out of way properly to move the zipper pull

I linked two similar Brother ones too here: www.sewessential.co.uk/brother-stitch-guide-foot-f035n and here www.sewessential.co.uk/brother-vertical-stitching-alignment-foot-f063 it would be worth checking if it is compatible with your machine, any issues drop us an email.
