Lennon's original title for the song was "Maharishi." It's his curdled response to having been taken in by the Indian guru and how used and betrayed he felt. The words, vocals, and attitude are pure John.

I had read that Lennons original lyric was F.U. Maharishi but George said change the words I'm not singing that and Lennon said he copped out and changed it to Sexy Sadie. Anyways a great vocal performance by Lennon also incredible backing vocals as well

My Dad gave me the White Album for my 13th birthday in the mid eighties. Although I had listened to my parents Beatles records as a small child, the White album made me a life long devotee. Because it was mine, and it opened my eyes to how innovative and brilliant they truly were. There is just something about the power of music at that age. This is the single most played record of mine in my life, probably followed next by Graceland. This simple album on cassette is certainly the most significant gift I ever received, my Dad truly gave me the love of music. He passed away last year of ALS and I miss him profoundly. But a Beatles song, particularly one from the White Album makes me think of him, happy memories. Thank you for your wonderful Beatles reaction I always enjoy. And your other music too, you have excellent song choices!

This is a strange take. Lyrically, yes I'd say that Lennon went in a pretty new direction with this song. Stylistically though, the song certainly fits in with the rest of White Album. In terms of harmony, this song is simply another ingenious stroke in the Beatles long catalog of ingenious chord progressions. So I guess it's a matter of what aspect of the song you're looking at, but overall I definitely think Sexy Sadie is exactly what we would expect from the Beatles in this time period.
@hw343434
@hw343434 2 года назад
@@Gabe7Gal well, I would definitely agree this song is like nothing else in the Beatles catalog. Radiohead was influenced by this song in their classic “Karma Police” which is based on this chord progression/style. John’s melody and falsetto singing are truly unique here as well. The guitar parts are magic from John and George how they intertwine, the piano sound on Paul’s part, the vocal harmonies are reminiscent of the end of “Happiness is a Warm Gun” from the White Album but other than that it feels like a totally unique song, never mind that it’s one of the first diss tracks ever made like this

The Beatles split the world's musical head wide open and let in ideas from every genre. They demonstrated the possibility that there is no style that something musically valuable cannot be extracted from and used in new and imaginative ways. There are many bands I feel made unique contributions to music that I absolutely revel in but the doors were thrown open W-I-D-E for musical innovation by the Beatles. Love them.

So...when you first get into the Beatles, your first questions are "Who sings that?" Eventually, the more you listen the more you'll be able to pick out who sings what. But don't feel bad. The joy of the Beatles, ultimately, is that it doesn't matter who does what. It is just impressive how cohesive they all sound together. :)

The song IS about the "Maharishi" their guru, but John is mocking him for being inappropriate with women. Really. "You broke the rules, you laid it down for all to see". No, the singer is not George. The song confirmed Charles Manson's belief that the Beatles were talking directly to him, by virtue of one of his followers, Susan Atkins, having already been nicknamed Sadie Mae Glutz. When the Maharishi asked why they were leaving the meditation retreat early, John sarcastically replied: "If you're as cosmic as you say you are, you should already know!" This song, originally titled 'Maharishi', was an extension of that sentiment. Mia Farrow thought the Maharishi had tried to make a pass at her during a private interview, and freaked out. Later she thought perhaps she'd misinterpreted his actions. Whatever the truth in this case, there's no doubt that just as with Christian priests and monks, many supposedly enlightened gurus, Zen Masters, et al, have taken advantage of the psychological power they wield over their disciples to coerce them into sex. Often victims have been disbelieved and the great man's crimes covered up for years. When Mia's sister Prudence got so absorbed in her meditation practice she disappeared for days and wouldn't come out of her cabin, she became the subject of another White Album song inspired by the Beatles' time in Rishikesh, Dear Prudence (won't you come out to play?). All in all, an interesting time was had by all, I guess you could say. :-) (Paul and Ringo have continued to practice the Transcendental Meditation technique they learnt from the Maharishi, and have supported efforts to have it taught in schools.)
@Iluvyourtoes
@Iluvyourtoes 3 года назад
Well John wrote that about the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, whom he thought was deceitful, not the "detached" enlightened guru he had originally thought he was. He is denouncing the Maharishi's pull he had on everyone, with his hypnotic and alluring words and ways "you'd give up everything you owned just to sit at her table" so yeah he chose to use the sexy girl metaphor for several reasons, for one thing "sexy sadie" sounds better than singing "maharishi, what have you done?" lol In a poetic sense it also sounds better, and the lure of a beautiful woman is easily understood by the "non initiate" and also it's an indirect way of attacking the maharishi, without flat out calling him out by name...

Harri, I've listen to so much Beatles over the decades to the point of almost ad nauseam lol. And I owned the White album for many, many years, (about 3 - 1/2 decades in fact, lol, before I finally sold it to someone). Anyway, as you probably can guess, after a while, you get to where you can recognize their voices. I can easily see how you'd think it was George. They have similarities. I used to get them mixed up on some songs when I was younger as well. But John had a 'tiny, tiny' bit more what I would call a nasal quality to his voice than George. So, even though I already know it's John on this song, I can also tell it's him just from having learned 'almost' by heart, the subtle little unique different qualities of each of the Beatles' voices for so long!. You will get to where you can pick them out. I know you already know McCartney's voice very well.

I got the sense from listening along that David Bowie listened to this song quite a lot back in the day. I dig how the background vocals early in this song attempt to sound like a wah-wah pedal as they sing "wah wah wah wah wah wah..." You need to listen to the Beatles' When I Get Home, You're Going to Lose that Girl, Tell Me Why and Any Time At All for really great Lennon vocals, and Another Girl, Things We Said Today, The Night Before and You Won't See Me for great McCartney vocals.

Just FYI, "Sadie" is a nickname for Sarah. Just thought I'd throw that out there, lol.

It's John, for sure. A response to their Indian Guru phase.

You're hilarious thinking this is George and when you reacted to 'Everybody's trying to be my baby' you thought it was John, but that's understandable, they both had something indescribable in their voices that can be easily confused, both gorgeous!!

This one is great. I think it's in the same area as 'Savoy truffle"

The White Album is maybe their most eclectic album. You can throw in Sargent Pepper & Magical Mystery Tour too. Check out Hello Goodbye, Lucy In Sky With Diamonds & Lovely Rita Meter Maid. They’d nothing the Beatles can’t do.

The way I heard it was the Maharishi betrayed the Beatles' trust ('broke the rules') by sleeping with Mia Farrow's sister. And it was John doing the lead vocal, Harri... 🎸🎶🥁🎹😄

Great great song , a couple of comments recommending Savoy Truffle , I'll add a vote ( it's a George song by the way ) , I know you dig bass - it's got some very groovy Paul bass . Cheers .

I think you’d like Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey, that comes just before Sexy Sadie on the White Album.

Harri, if you’re a George fan, you need to check out “The Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp”… a feast for the ears.

A nice rule of thumb: If it's a Lennon-McCartney song and Paul's not singing lead, it's John. There are a few exceptions, but mostly on early material, and George's voice back then was very nasal and so easy to distinguish. Also, if it's a George penned song and George is singing (as he wrote it) and there's a harmony vocal, it's inevitably Paul. John might sing a background ooh or ah, but never a harmony line in and of itself.

In terms of syllables, "sexy Sadie" is the same as "Maharishi," four syllables. My sense is if Lennon hadn't been taken from us, he and the Maharishi would've reconciled. Speaking of Lennon's soulful side to his voice, Ringo said he preferred John's guide vocal for 'Good Night' to his own. It's difficult to imagine an improvement on Ringo's vocals in that song. He said John's voice was really so soulful. I agree with you that George and John did have similar vocals, but I think John is always a bit raspier and George is always a bit sweeter. It's always a surprise each time I visit your channel, how pleasant your attitude is and how wise and always interesting your insights are with regards to the songs, lyrics, production.

Love Ringo’s take but im sure John would’ve elevated his song “Good Night” to another level. Probably would’ve sounded a bit like he did singing on “Julia”
