It's Flirty Fight February, and most adverts are really boring, razor adverts being no exception. Unless, of course, you get two attractive people with swords and give them a surprisingly compelling piece of storytelling...
More flirty fights, many involving swords: ru-vid.com/group/PLj4N-R1RQxAtdBv-bvf6iJPHlUdSiQXLi ⚔️ Also, the whole ad is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6x0RtCVGx2o.html
@@StutleyConstable I like eggplant and you picked something reaaaaaly easy to sell by flirting. Just end with them eating juicy bites of roasted eggplant slices.
This also reminds me of the opening fight in The Final Flight of the Osiris from the Animatrix. I don't know if you have any interest in reviewing animated versions of fights like this, but there are definitely some similarities. Awesome video as always btw!
They really knew the scene revolved around mutual consent, and I appreciate that so much. Commercials tend to focus on a one sided fantasy and can get very unintentionally creepy.
I think the guy took off the jacket because it's more of "This jacket is expensive and vintage, and I will not allow it to be scratched. Shirts are cheap."
Sexy swordfight is actually a thing? Interesting. This "trope" could convey personality, introduce characters dynamic, and *_flirting_* at all once for a ship. Gotta consider this in my idea bucket list.
{rhythmically pounding on table} Flirty! Fight! February! Flirty! Fight! February! Very much looking forward to the next month of Monday lunch breaks, cheers!
I love how _even_ the tone is here. From the way the two interact, and the _fun_ yet flirty way they start a swordfight, you can tell their relationship has a strong basis of friendship, and that's what sells it for me.
I guess since it's a pre-arranged assignation they got the glazier in yesterday to put prop glass in the skylight. (And booked them to come back tomorrow...)
I liked the ad...but it reminded me of how disappointed I am in the modern Wilkinson company. They have a wonderful history as one of the best sword companies in the world...and...well. Now they make razors. I just wish I could still get competently made swords from them. At least the antiques are still good.
Mask of Zorro, Gomez and Morticia...and Mummy 1999 (not a part of the video, but I like to think always a part of the channel). May 90stalgia never die.
Now I kind of want to see "Dress making with a sword." Imagine you're at all party where baddies attack. One slice from your sword and your too long dress is now something you can move in. (Or two+ slices because, let's face it, dresses have A Lot of fabric) Or you're wearing a pencil skirt (not sure why) and need to make slits down the sides so you can move more than an inch at a time.
😍 I could 100% imagine the tear away construction to make this look good. 😁 And the tight dress dilemma implied with the pencil skirt is definitely a design flaw for numerous cocktail dresses and formal dresses that have that fitted silhouette. It would make creating clean tear sections a little more detailed, likely needing a second or third dress for each cut, but still very possible. For non-performance wear, I probably wouldn't make it too tight to not show the area of the break. Side Note: If you can't move more than an inch easily in your pencil skirt that hits at or slightly above or below the knee, check for a back kick vent. Most manufacturers will put an X of stitching to keep the vent closed and prevent damage in transit and while trying on in store, but it's made to be cut so the vent can do it's job and allow for easy walking! The average pencil skirt with a modern kick vent is totally something you can run in, so unless it's got a traditional construction (kinda rare in non vintage pieces) or goes significantly past the knee to mid calf, you should have good range of motion. 👍
Yeah I was never interested in adding pencil skirts to my wardrobe. I hated the feeling of being constricted so I went for pants or a dress for the work place.
Her leap lunge when she first cuts his shirt does indeed look better wider out. If a sword suddenly gives a clean shave, then a bed of glass is basically a full body wax.
If the sword was recently sharpened really well you can shave with it, but not like that. I've shaved with a factory sharp axe, and it worked better than a used razor.
Yup, remember that ad as well. It is one of the better ads for shaving products (though I use an old fashioned safety razor). It is incredibly well done, and not cringy, and has aged quite well. I still enjoy the ad, the tension depicted, but then I also did some flirty fighting (ok, more very low level capoeira in a sports course), which was.... pretty... Nice. Yeas. It's a dialogue. Same as in dancing. And a duel can be referred to as "the dance" (Mozart, I think in Figaro? "Will der Herr Graf den Tanz mit mir wagen?" - "does his highness want to risk the dance with me?"). Getting pushed through the bloody skylight would be a bit of a mood killer, though.
Even without knowing the ad itself I actually love so much, how the woman is not portrayed like in many other adverts for .... especially shaving products. She is not just sexy or cool. It's not an ... erotic trope. It's fun.
I love how she means business in the sense that she swaps the flirtiness for focus and energy when they cross blades cos she wants to make it an actual challenge, not an "it's fun, so go easy on me" fight. In between phases, it's smile and tease again -- or a pout when her nice skirt is slashed. Great acting, such good chemistry.
Really wish they still did, but then again, their last few decades making them were...not good. Up through World War 1 era examples are generally very good, things start to get spotty in the in between the World Wars but there's still some well made gems, and pretty much every thing after World War 2 is pure wallhanger or dress sword, save for an occasional anomaly that really stands out, and even most of those were intended as presentation swords, but they actually put in the effort for a single on off for one reason or another and made something functional as well. Admittedly, considering the razor branch was proving the be the money making section at the time with the shift in warfare it makes sense from a business perspective.
How similar would you consider the "mentor fight", where one character is trying to teach or reveal something to another character during or through the fight (for example Neo vs. Morpheus in 'The Matrix', or the glasses fight between Roddy Piper and Keith David in 'They Live'), to be to flirty fights as a trope?
Hmm... My personal take on this is that Mentor Fights either has an active form of teaching (such as Pearl from Steven Universe teaching Connie) or a more passive form of teaching (such as insulting banter about skills). The common underlying emotions in this type is normally either frustration/desperation (of the student towards the mentor), exasperation (of thr mentor towards the student) or determination (of the student towards the mentor). Flirty Fights involve a lot of banter that is actively written as a way of Toying with any of the participants. The flirty banter is normally comprised of backhanded compliments from one or both parties and active compliments that are underlined with tension and sometimes frustration.
@@caiolucas8257 yes, most flirty fights are usually evenly matched (both characters are mutually compatible, which is shown through similar fighting styles, emotion, attitude and ability), while mentory fights are usually one sided (the master demonstrating a flaw in the student, with very different levels of ability, very different goals and underlying emotions - and possibly different styles as a result). There is room for subversion though: you could imagine a character acting as if they were in a flirty fight, but being outmached or toying with the other, demonstrating a lack of compatibility through the fight - and by extension the relationship's imbalance- or you can have a mentoring fight where master and students are evenly matched, or even where the student is stronger, but the master uses his key teaching to keep up. Which would be harder to deal with since actively it goes against the most efficient way to show that the master has information that the other hasn't.
HAHAHA, I actually said "I really feel like this should be Gomez and Morticia" and then you said it moments later in the video! (I love when that happens.)
I actually thought Jill was referring to the cut clothing for a moment, before realising she meant the editing. So many different _types_ of cut in this ad...
Never seen this add before and I was with them, until the guy crashed through the skylight and landed on a bed full of glass shards. That's when my personal 'suspension of disbelief' circuit blew and I went: tf? Still, good add, otherwise. Sexy, fun...8/10.
@@maxthexpfarmer3957 You can still get cut by tempered glass. It breaks into cubes, not shards, but the cubes have edges and they can still dig into you. Thus, a bed full of it is MANY cuts waiting to happen.
@@classicslover Oh yeah. I recently broke one of the back windows of my van and I had to clean up the resulting mess. Certainly preferable to regular glass shards, but I still had to wear gloves or I would have cut myself eventually. Not something, I would want to fall on.
2:06 _"Either they've done this before, or this was a text which specifically said: 'come duel me.'"_ I will chose the booty-call swordfight interpretation. I love that so much, thank you.
*FOR-WHAT-LITTLE-IT'S-WORTH,* the two things in this commercial that really make it unbelievable for me are: (1) The INSTANT SHAVE on the guy. No. Just...No. 😊 (2). Falling on a bed covered in glass. I definitely agree with Jill on this one...👍
Cool breakdown. 🙂 I wonder if there are restrictions about how much sword fighting "violence" you can show in an advert during the day and if those restrictions are why there are so many cuts in the fight scene? They'll want an advert they can show at any time in any country, and maybe in some territories people with swords slashing at each other in an advert during the daytime is a no-no, even if it's comedic in nature, so they put a high number of cuts in the fight scene to get around this restrictions.
Or maybe it's just timing? If you put in a bunch of cuts, you can tell editors that if they need to reduce X number of seconds, they can cut straight from time X to time Y, and if you have a basket of a few of those of those you get a lot of flexibility.
I love the way adverts could be for anything. I mean, a story about a young artist struggling to make ends meet by being an itinerant ferret-milker with an easel and a weasel for 30 seconds, followed with, "buy spark plugs!" in impact font.
Excellent analysis. The bed full of glass at the end makes me wince so hard.😬 But I do love that they aren't taking themselves at all seriously (disappearing beard). It is good fun.
Yeah, the cuts... I've seen that in SOoooOoO many fighting scenes now and it annoys the foo out of me. I can't even see who's doing what, especially when it's dark and/or both fighters kinda look alike. And it's total sensory overload 🙈
With the gazes they exchanged before any swordfight.... this would be flirty even if they sat down and played Pokemon cards on the floor (I'm glad they didn't though - this is cooooool hahaha)
@@JillBearup no need for words, Jill. Man enters a Pokemon Gym holding a phone. Cuts to official Pokemon coin rolling his way. Man looks up with lust in his gaze. Woman shows up in dress made of Pokemon cards. I DARE YOU, I DARE YOU THINK this wouldn't sell a lot of Pokemon cards (and also make a lot of people mad)
@@JoriamRamos There's an actual (silver-bordered) Magic: the Gathering card called "cardboard carapace" - that enchants a creature and gives it +1/+1 for each copy of Cardboard Carapace you have with you but don't have in the game.
I had to stop the video because I was laughing way to hard when Ms. Bearup said "you idiots." God, this was a great way to spend a lunch break. Thank you for posting 💚
Your right about "too many cuts" during phrase 2. Which is good keeping tension, but makes it really hard to enjoy the sword play. They'll really just waving the swords about from what it looks like.
Meshes well with the thrown against wall/flirt/threaten short from last week! Fun Fact: Directors, including those who direct commercials, watch things...sometimes without context. They see a fight where the actors cannot fight and it has quick cuts...but they don't KNOW that the many cuts are because the actors cannot fight...they just assume that is how one shoots and cuts a fight. Don;t know if that was the case here, but it is possible. And HA! See? You have to turn a "spear" fight into a "staff" fight for it to be even REMOTELY interesting. Spears are to fighting what "PONG" is to video games. (Except PONG is more fun!)
I wonder if the cuts might also be to allow a shorter shoot time. More cuts (could) mean you can do fewer takes of a long shot and piece together the parts that worked the best. Cuts can increase the pace too, which you might need to keep people watching even though it's an ad.
@@thefaboo Well for a shorter shoot time, you would have to be editing "in-camera", meaning you know exactly what you want from every angle and exactly how much of each shot. Most professionals don't take that chance. They'd rather have more to work with in case the company/studio/client wants options. And they always do. ;) And yes, you are so very right! Cuts increase the pace...but then...Jackie Chan increases the pace to ridiculous levels with fewer cuts. There is the skill in the fight, and there is the skill in the camera/editing when you DON'T have the skill in the fight.
The "too many cuts" style is a current thing modern directors seem to like doing. You can see it in movies all of the time. I think they believe it makes them seem edgy.
Just went and watched the whole ad. Along with like 40 others who went there from this video according to the comments over there. The music worked really well too. The vocals change to male or female depending on who is attacking/has the advantage. A duel and a duet. Yeah, the skylight glass does kinda ruin it.
first, haven't seen this ad before and really enjoy this video about it. second, Flirty Fight February is new to me. i must now carefully revise all Valentine's Day plans. third, fencing lessons just moved to the top of my to do list. if you need me, i'll be, um, polishing my rapier. ⚔️
Soooo let's pretend and hypothesize... suppose I wanted to include a flirty sword fight in a video game... What would it take to hire you to choreograph it for me?
Sword-fighting as a form of foreplay? Things like this happen a lot in some of Seanan McGuire's "cryptid" novels (all the female characters are thoroughly schooled in sword-fighting, knife-throwing, and ridiculous acrobatics)
Can't say I remember this advert, but I feel like "That bed is full of glass YOU EEJITS!" would have been a great title for this video. Not a flirty fight but for some odd reason my brain always goes to the sword fight in Wayne's World 2 when I see clothes being cut off, I know it's a ridiculous parody of a sword fight but it's meant to be.
That skirt looks like a serious trip hazard! I'm trying to see how they actually did the clothes tearing. Frame by frame helps but I can't see it. Was it pre-cut and a thread pulled? "Freeing your skin" by taking it right off with broken glass!
For the shirt we cut scene to where it's already split. For the skirt it's one frame solid, next split. Did they do a cut (scene) here from one sold skirt to the cut one? For the top it's really well done if it's a cut scene. For the skirt it's an easy cut scene. Jacket is a cut scene. Trousers are a cut scene. Remainder of the dress is a cut scene, he clearly cuts up the back of the dress but somehow it's cut across the top of the shoulders! With the exception of the top, they're all done with cuts. Maybe there were so many cuts so we didn't notice the scene cuts at the point where the clothes switch from 'solid' to 'slashed'.
My concern is that if they did multiple takes of this, how many outfits got cut up?? Like imagine going into a shop and saying "ok, I know i already took 20, but can I buy another 10 light blue shirts?"
I can guarantee you are 100% correct in your assessment of how this ad was thought up and pitched. Ad guy: "Hey wouldn't it be cool to do that thing from Zorro where he cuts her clothes off" Company Rep: "Yes but make her cut off his beard, because you know, we're a razor company" Ad guy: ... ok!
I knew that I was going to "Like" your video when I started watching it - I've watched scores of them, on every subject from protective fashion to logical fallacies, and it seems I always do - but I knew I was going to *LOVE* this one about seven seconds in. *Happy Valentine's Day, Ms. Bearup* ! And *Thank You!*
So, her name is Dutch (probably) which means: Inge (you got that one pretty good) -> Ing-eh van -> vahn (short, not like the car) Bruystegem -> Brœy-stay-gem (gem pronounced like: xəm )
YAY Flirty fight February is back! These are some of the best videos in my opinion. They always point out things that I must subconsciously notice but don't fully understand. So cool! Also the fights are always epic to breakdown. Happy Dance!
