Warning: If you want to learn wood turning, go watch someone that knows what they are doing, don't do what I do! Apologies for the poor audio during the lathe work. I go through the process of making a cocobolo tamper using a 0.50 cal AE shell casing courtesy of the Durham Duke.

Nice job Mike. Since I reload 12 gauge, I always have some lead shot on hand which works well for weight. Love to tinker and make these fun things.

Hi Mike, I really enjoyed watching all of the various steps in the process....then seeing the beautiful finished product. It was especially meaningful, since the tamper that you made for me is almost identical to yours....and I love it!! Thank you again my friend.

Great tamper, great video! I have a couple old razors with wood handles that I like to hit with the tung oil, leaves such a nice look with the grain. The tamper you sent me like the one showed at the end still gets regular use!

That was great, Mike. Thanks so much for taking us through the process. Wow...that cocobolo seems like very hard wood. You can tell by the sound, as you worked it. The final product is super. Nice Work. Hope you enjoyed your Christmas, and New Years. Will be looking forward to the CaneRodPiper videos of 2018. All the best. Ed

Hi Ed, Thank you! It is a hard wood, but some of the noise was my fault more than the woods ;-) The holidays were wonderful, and I hope you enjoyed as well. Stay warm my friend!

That came out great. Homemade tamps are the best. One word of warning, as a Watchmaker with a lot of experience on a buffing wheel, I notice people who are new to it are surprised how easily they can grab the piece you're working on and launch it. A very firm grip is essential.
@CaneRodPiper
@CaneRodPiper 6 лет назад
Thank you! That is a great point and one I should have mentioned. You learn quickly (and usually the hard way) to use a vise-like grip and always pull the object away from the wheel when re-positioning.

You did fine with your lathe work. To heck with those who think otherwise. So far as my post, none has, and none should. My Grandfather was a mechanic/machinist. When he passed 49 years ago I could of had anything in his Garage. He had a nice Air Compressor and the tools that went with it, plus he a metal turning lathe and the tools that went with it. I turned many fine wood products on that Lathe. As an ignorant young College Boy, I didn't take either. I have no idea what become of my Craftsman Wood Turning tools that I bought back then. Do you know how I bad I feel? I'm sure you do. I am a Purdue Degreed Engineer now retired for a few years. I am sure my Grandpa would kick my butt right now if he could. Yes, he could. He was a WWI Vet and built like a solid piece of Granite. I love the memories this video brought back to me. Thank you much.
@CaneRodPiper
@CaneRodPiper 6 лет назад
Thank you, I am very glad that I could bring back some happy memories! My grandfather was always tinkering with something, and whenever I work in the shop I sort of feel him there with me. I wish that I had some of his tools, but I didn't even think of it when he passed away. I was also an ignorant young college boy.

Nice work. I used to use a shellac friction finish on lathe projects. I forget the exact recipe. After making a couple pens I got in to using CA finishing.
@CaneRodPiper
@CaneRodPiper 6 лет назад
Thanks! I have been meaning to try CA finishing for years now. I'm worried that I'll wind up wasting most of the CA because I don't do that much and the glue tends to harden once open. Also I am liable to glue myself to the tamper ;-)
@badgerpiper901
@badgerpiper901 6 лет назад
CaneRodPiper Keep it in the freezer. CA glue can't freeze or dry in the freezer. Well if you glue it to yourself you will always have a tamper with you.
@CaneRodPiper
@CaneRodPiper 6 лет назад
Thanks, I'll give that a try (the freezer, not the perma-tamp :-).

Good video on turning the tamper. If you turn the shell side as a taper, it is easier to fit. When the diameter meets the shell, it is done. Also if you put 2 or 3 BBs in the shell, the tamper will also make noise.
@CaneRodPiper
@CaneRodPiper 3 года назад
Thanks for the info John! Not sure I would want a rattling tamper, but I know someone will ;-) Thanks for watching!

Haha.. as you can tell, the primer strike from the firing pin isn't always in the center. this is common in firearms because of barrel fitting to the slide assembly in semi-auto pistols. as far as rifles, not so much, and revolvers seem to have centered strikes. -Dave

Awesome video, loved watching and then the final product! I have a quick question as I have made something similar but with two different she'll casing. One brass and one nickel. Do you coat/ seal them with some sort of clear coat to keep them from tarnishing? Thanks in advance!
@CaneRodPiper
@CaneRodPiper 2 года назад
Hi Derrik, thank you for the kind comment. I have only used brass, and I coat them with the same carnuba wax that I use on the wood. I have not seen any tarnishing. I would be wary of any clear coat as this is being used to tamp hot ash and the coating would likely melt.

I made one it’s a lot uglier than yours. I cut the shoulder off of a 30-06 case and epoxied it into a kindergartners size pencil. I also applied a liquid plastic to the end of the case to keep the ash from sticking around the primer and engraved writing.
