Shad attack behaviour filmed underwater at Port Shepstone
Umzimkulu regular and pro angler Shaun Begg made the pilgrimage from the Big Smoke down to the coast this week. Luckily for us, that means many hours of fishing!
After catching his first two estuary GTs with us on the river cruiser, we were lucky enough to find a window of great conditions and tides at the same time, on the 8 September 2020. To go out to sea. Early bells.
We never thought we would have a real stowaway! More about that later...
The shad have been plentiful along the backline at Port Shepstone, and it is garrick season. They spawn round about now and readily take a live shad, anytime. And so we though wed go take a look around, and see if the illegal pressure on the garrick down in Port St. Johns has had any effect up here.
Well. We caught a gazillion shad - so much fun on light tackle. And we were forced to take our 12 allowed home since Chelsea Dog, the stowaway specialist Jack Russel, killed at least that many! Delicious breakfast!
A few rockcod made their way into the hatch for Shaun to feed his family too.
But. There were no garrick and no sign of them either. Even the spearfishermen are having a bleak garrick season and we are all left wondering why aren't we...the illegal jigging in Port St. Johns perhaps? They took out hundreds, if not thousands of these endangered fish!
