Shade Garden Maintenance and Planting a ‘Summer Crush’ Reblooming Hydrangea

Today I’m working in my little shade garden bed that needed a little revamping. I’m removing a few plants and planting in a beautiful reblooming First Additions hydrangea called ‘Summer Crush’. Then some mulching and cutting back of tired, spent perennials right string the corner. Plus, of course, some moments with our sweet dogs, who are always keeping me company.

It turned out beautiful! You needed a hug and your pup knew it 💙 Brought tears to my eyes.

Love this video. Love the honesty. Sometimes what we think fits doesn't really work. It's your garden, you can change it whenever. 😂

I needed this video. I just started gardening 2 years ago after my last child was raised. I am obsessed! However, I overthink everything! Then, after I make a decision, I stress that I made the wrong decision. You looked like you were about to cry, and I wanted to give you a hug. Thank you for your vulnerability. Some days I feel like I'm not talented enough to garden. The defeat can feel overwhelming. Your video made me feel like I'm not alone. If you can have such a beautiful garden and you feel that way, then I feel normal feeling that way too. Oh, and everything you did turned out beautiful!! P.S. I have 4 summer crush hydrangeas, all in full sun (because the tag says they can take full sun), and they're scortched. Lol. Ugh! Gardening is hard! Lol. Hugs.

@@kellygillogly3337 Hi Kelly! Goodness, thank you for your comment! ❤️❤️ It’s like, as gardeners, we have to accept the challenges just as much as the hopeful outcome, right? I just have to always remind myself that it’s a process. A rolling cycle that seems to be never ending… but that is a big part of the fun of it! ❤️

I decided to make a salvia garden, so I transplanted three, all are in super shock. I am watering three times a day. Why did I decide it was a good time to do this? I guess I was inspired by other video gardeners, like yourself. Thanks for sharing. Your garden is spectacular. I aspire to have one, lots to learn and starting from scratch.😊

I feel your pain…I just planted 5 Limelight’s and as soon as I planted them they all started to turn yellow and lose their leaves…not sure if I’m overwatering but they did seem pretty root bound in the containers…who knows! I’m just hoping the bounce back 😂

@@sandradepew3817 It’s so sad and frustrating isn’t it?? How are your blooms looking? I remember learning from Jim Putnam that yellowing and dropping leaves is usually too much water, usually associated with poor drainage. I think that was my issue. I filled the hole with water as I planted and I think I kind of drowned mine. I’m actually it watering less now and it seems happier. Go figure!
@sandradepew3817

@@myrusticgardens the blooms are still looking ok (so far)…I tried adding iron but I think my next step is to water less. I just used one of those soil testers and it showed that the soil was still moist even though they were looking pretty wilted so maybe that’s my issue too! Good luck with yours!

Hi Lacy, Love your gardens. We gardeners don't have a set time to work outside in the garden. I hand water all my flower beds in the morning then I go outside again later to do other things in the garden. The hydrenga looks beautiful there! Do you have clay soil?? I have clay soil too. I use woodchips and leaves to ammend it. Do you think I should add soil for raised beds, too??
@myrusticgardens
@myrusticgardens 25 дней назад
@@user-gk5ph2kj8p Hey there! Thank you for your comment. ❤️ How is your soil with the amendments that you’ve been using? I honestly used this stuff because it was comparable in price to getting a big load delivered, but I don’t know that it will be what I’ll add every year. I think your option sounds economical and effective!

@@tinag9538 Hi there! It is a soil conditioner blend that I purchase at BiMart (a store here in the Pacific Northwest. I decided to use this in many of my beds this year because i hoped it would be a heathy addition that would improve the soil. It’s versatile because it can be used in planting holes mixed with the native soil, as a raised bed soil, or as a mulch. Handy! This coming year though, I think I’ll get a large load of compost delivered and just use that. 🥰
