This shade mix can work with sun and shade and I would not advise mixing as you want a common visual appearance

Crazy have you done this video recently? (Assuming you have) i always thought you couldn't do stuff like this due to frost etc and it wouldn't grow. Looked a great job cant wait forvthe results.

1.000... that is a lot. that is more than the Landzie roller. I can't even find a distributor in my region. I would be interested in a solution, available on the European continent, I live in Belgium. All these are a bit expensive, if I have to import them myself/have them sent by post.

Great job , is that soil/ dress machine available to hire from the tool places- so much easier look fwd to the next update. You should do through out summer - just a short 6 minutes or so. Good to punt the seed for growing I shade

Did this to my lawn last week, used your shaded seed and now waiting like an expectant father for traces of germination (I know it's only been 7 days so far) but I'm watering 3 times a day and inspecting every time 😃

You could be waiting 5-6 weeks for shady germination this time of year. Go easy on the watering, there should be plenty of soil moisture this time of year

Great UK lawn content! Whats the best top dressing you have used or mixed yourself? Lots of mixed reviews online from suppliers where you have to trust the batch will be a 'Good' one. I need to do a fair bit of levelling so need a sandy top dressing, or willing to mix/sieve myself if you can recommend a sand to use with topsoil? most suggest sharp sand. I'm based in Preston so any suggested suppliers would be a bonus!

Great vid thanks. Section of my lawn has been destroyed by builders working over winter - very compacted and basically turned to mud. I’ve racked off debris, levelled by foot and hand forked the entire section, my next plan was to over seed and top dress with soil. Hoping the seed/soil would go into the forked holes. Questions I have is 1) would you avoid or encourage walking over the top dressing as you’re doing it? 2) am I missing anything (would obvs water) for grass to come back. Wasn’t planning on fertiliser as grass was never pristine anyway with 2 young boys, just want actual grass back rather than large muddy patch. Final question I’m in N.Yorkshire so about 8-10c fcst here the next few weeks. Should I wait a while with it aerated by the fork before seeding or crack on with that now. Appreciate any advice you can offer cheers Bri

Thanks Jayne, the most important thing is going to be something that is weed free! For levelling 70/30 sand mix can be good. For seeding something that retains moisture and is weed free

Hey Great video. I've done a power rake on my lawn . Have I left it to late in the year for scarify as wanting to look good for summer. Can I omit this step and go straight onto over seading and top dress? Did you miss your seeds in with top dress on the green machine I couldn't work that out

No spring is a good time to scarify. Seeds went on first the topdressing over the top

Hollow tining to relieve compaction is a waste of time as it only removes a very small % of the soil volume (max 5% @ 2” x 2” spacing) and doesn’t relieve compaction and actually increases it around the edge of each hole. Not that the lawn was compacted as you could have found out with a simple soil sample test when you were assessing the job thereby eliminating an unnecessary part of the job and reducing the cost to the client?! I base this on a 30 yr career in GC management and 12 yrs running a small gardening business where lawn maintenance advice was an important part of the client relationship.

Turf Type Fescues if you have a shady lawn, you can mix a little rye in if you wish, but I wouldn’t bother as it is a very weak plant out of the sun. In the sun I’d go Rye all day! Beautiful colour and you can mow it really low....

Really useful video, Matt. My lawn is relatively healthy on one half but that half that's in the shade is looking quite bare after winter. Is it worth overseeing/top-dressing the whole lawn or just the bare patches?

I would overseed the whole area, that way it will thicken up the existing grass, fill the patches and also blend together in a more even colour and texture mark

Pre seed fertiliser can be used during the overseed process. Do not use iron or weedkiller

My lawn is so bad, wet and shot that moss isn’t even growing. I literally have a flat square patch of mud. This year I hope I’ve bought a better seed. I lose my sun from September to April on my back lawn
