Hamid, author of the award-winning Temptations of Power, examines the premise that Islam is unique among religions for its political goals. Shadi has presented good thoughts but I wonder he simply chose to ignore or he does not know about Syed Maududi the scholar who actually proposed idea of Islamic State (not to confused with ISIS) and did inspired world wide Islamists movements.?

There is nothing exceptional about terms like Islam and Muslim. They come from shared Semitic linguistic tri-consonantal roots with ancient Hebrew and Aramaic - S-L-M - Shin Lamed Mim, from the Semitic Alphabet, from which you would get words like shalam or shalom or salam and others like peace, abundance, whole, being perfect, and paying your debt to God by submitting. Mushalam in Aramaic; Mooshlam in Hebrew

He is saying that Islam may never be reformed the way Christianity/Judaism was but what solution is he offering then...that the secular state should accept Islam as inherently separate and more should be done to accommodate it in politics, society, law, personal life etc???

?? Good question! The answer is: he can’t offer the solution because it would be DANGEROUS for him. He has given us many FACTS about Islam as an expert. Now it is upto us to do something about it. What that is, WE need to decide.

Is "democracy" reduced to electing, every few years, a few people to govern the country ? So, could democracy have a majority voting to suppress voting right for most everyone ?
