It's obvious that they wanted to do more episodes, but Netflix didn't give them enough of a budget. Just the overall feat of smashing two books together, explaining the lore of the world, successfully fleshing out a dozen characters, and telling a cohesive story in about seven hours is enough to compensate for any deficiencies.

ive heard the budget per episode was 8 million and they were offered 8 or 10 episodes with the same budget so they chose lesser episodes so the quality would be better but i would love to see what they can do with more episodes and bigger budget
@JordanHarveybooks
@JordanHarveybooks 3 года назад
@@veemr4877 Agreed! I think they made the right choice. For the scale of what they were trying to pull off, 8 million is a pretty low budget, so I can definitely understand why they wouldn't want to go lower than that. I feel like maybe what they should have done to make the pacing better was to not cover the entire first book (maybe to the darkling reveal & heist instead) in order to properly have the time to set up the world and characters. That way many of the emotional beats would have landed better.

Nina and Matthias’s storyline was my favorite part of the show💀🤚🏼. Also I hated what they did to zoya in the show , book zoya started out mean but she wasn’t a racist , all she wanted was power and safety. Show zoya is straight up unrecognizable to me.

hmm i'm not sure why but as a first time viewer ever of the grisha-verse, her lines didn't feel.. racist to me??? idk it's weird but it felt like they just added it in as a shallow attempt at making people dislike her early in but also felt very hollow as in she didn't actually mean that and was instead using it as a low level comment to make alina feel like shit :/ they could've definely done much better just plain taking that comment out though cause the way the rest of the cast treats her in the ending episode was way too light slap on the wrist for what she said

I thought it wasn’t as much about Alina looking different, but being actually a blood enemy. If two countries have military conflict for a long time people often will be raised in hatred or at least in distrust. My country has being in war for sometime now and I have witnessed a lot of people becoming hatful towards each other on both sides. Add some war propaganda to it in order to dehumanize your enemies and make them “evil” and you can understand why people, especially military can become biased. I think just calling it racism is simplification of something more complex. In reality soldiers are often brainwashed to be able to kill others and don’t see them as people. I don’t know if that’s the case with Zoya, but she doesn’t seem to have problems with any other POC on the show, so we will see how her character develops.

@@ashleyelisabeth4 What was his past in the books?
@ashleyelisabeth4
@ashleyelisabeth4 3 года назад
@@alexandra9944 If you're fine with me spoiling some scenes from the books, continue reading, but if not, then I highly suggest reading about the Darkling's evil origin story in "The Demon in the Wood"; it is a prequel to Shadow and Bone where we get to see how and why the Darkling has such a pessimistic view on the world as well as what Alina truly means to him. SPOILERS: In the prequel, the Darkling goes by the name Eryk at the time and he is 13 years old. What basically happens is that Baghra was trying to warn "Eryk" throughout the whole book that he shouldn't trust anyone and should only care about survival since others will just use him for his gift. Obviously, this version of the Darkling disagrees and believes in the good in people so this leads to him befriending another Grisha who was an outsider just like him because of her social status in their village. He grows to care for this person, maybe even like them. Once this Grisha finds out that Eryk is a human amplifier though, she betrays him by luring him into a trap to kill him so she's no longer an outsider and is moved up in the ranks of their village. Unfortunately for her, the Darkling actually learned to use the Cut as a reflex reaction to nearly being killed and she ended up dead because of it. I should add that this village was on thin ice on having neutrality with their neighboring village, but because the Darkling was in fear of his gift being discovered, he and Baghra framed that neighboring village which led to it being raided and burned to the ground. The book ends with Baghra telling him something along the lines of 'this is what I meant by you can't trust anyone and there's no place safe for people like us and that there's a consequence to everything" All of these catastrophic events, sets Eryk/Aleksander on a course to bring all of the Grisha together and make a place where they don't have to hide any longer; a place where they can feel safe and welcomed. A little fun fact: in the book, there is this little safe haven in the woods where the Darkling liked to go to because the trees never died there like him and it was always warm from the sun even though it was always winter weather. That scene is supposed to explain why Aleksander fell in love with Alina because she reminds him of a place where he felt the most safe and welcomed. Also, there's a scene between the Darkling and Baghra where they discuss the importance of him needing to hide his real name. The Darkling says he's afraid of forgetting his own name i.e. forgetting who he is (which is dramatic irony). Baghra responds by pointing at his heart and saying his real name is there and you don't just let anyone read it. This actually connects to a scene between the Darkling and Alina in Ruin and Rising (S&B book 3), where he says his real name is Aleksander. This shows that Alina is the only one that the Darkling trusted to give his heart to. In other words, Alina is the Darkling's salvation since she surfaces a part of him that he believed to be long dead which is the vulnerable boy we see in "The Demon in the Wood" who was so full of hope and optimism; she makes him feel human again. This is why I'm annoyed that in the show they brushed off the Darkling revealing his real name to Alina as not important because in the books, it's very significant to his character arc.

I like how they changed alina's character from a more passive protagonist to a more active protagonist. she had more agency in the story that made her feel more like she's actually part of the story instead of just an accessory to it. (minor spoilers?) examples: -alina choosing to go in the fold. in the books she and mal were already set to go into the fold so by changing it to where she makes that choice for herself to be with mal, it makes her discovering her powers feel like her choices mattered leading up to it. -alina's scar. idk i just like this change because in the books, she got it while holding a ceramic shard too tight cause she broke a teapot when she saw mal arriving from a trip when they were kids???? like that just seems so weak as a character bit and them changing it to her choosing to cut herself to hide her powers makes it feel more connected to the plot and to mal as a whole and makes her choice to remove it feel more emotional -idk there's probably more but those were the two that stood out to me

I agree that the story would've been told better if the writers were given a larger budget and did 10 episodes instead because we missed scenes from the book that added more depth to the story as well as the characters like Alina's training at the Little Palace and her rivalry with Zoya was only brushed on in the show. Shadow and Bone Netflix series managed to actually make me care about Alina. As I was reading the books I could not care less about her struggles and just went along with because I wanted to see how the story progresses. The show greatly improves upon Alina and also Mal's characters, they are more sympathetic, and I also like the fact that Alina was made half-Shu to add racial tension where there was none. Great change, highly approve. The Crows were wonderful and I simply loved Kaz he's my favorite character. Nina was fun, I didn't dislike her parts with Matthias and I understand why they were there, but I think that could have probably cut it a little shorter than it was.

yes to everything you said! I agree, Alina felt much more fleshed out and active. And the Crows brought that humor and recklessness and tension to the show. Kaz was definitely my favorite too, even though currently Jesper seems to be winning the 'favorite crow' award. (Understandable, I guess. But I've always been biased when it comes to Kaz.) While I love Helnik, I don't know if new show stans would completely understand how their storyline is exactly relevant to the main plot. It felt a bit random, tbh. But, aaah, as a book stan, the Helnik content gave me so much serotonin.

wow. I didn't know this was based on two book series. I just finished binge watching the show yesterday, and my thoughts were that it does really well at merging different storylines with very different aesthetics together. The way I see it, the different aesthetics make the world feel much richer and more detailed, in part because the visual design of the world was so good. It really felt like the characters came from very different places within the same world.

100% agree with your point about adding two more episodes! One of my few criticisms is that I wish the show had a bit more room to breathe - more time to explore Alina's experience and training in the Little Palace and to get to know the crows and their world. (Also, yes Nina and Matthias's arc was quite separate from the rest of the story but it was made clear that this is a kind of set up for later seasons, and we often see things like that in high fantasy so it didn't bother me at all.)

Great to see you review this, Jordan! I only have the one and a half episodes left to watch, but having just read most of Shadow and Bone (yet to check out Six of Crows), I can definitely say the show held my interest a WHOLE lot more than the source material did for the reasons you also mentioned! Like, Alina is actually likeable and isn't a passive protagonist, the chemistry between Alina and Mal is more genuine (even if it pales in comparison to the Darkling and Alina's haha), and while the worldbuilding and themes is still a bit bare bones and sloppy (in my personal opinion), the added subplot of the Crows elevates it a bit more. And of course, more Darkling scenes, which makes me happy considering he was the only character I had any interest on in the source material. xD As for any issues, it's just mainly the combination of ones from the book - I haven't yet touched the two other sequels and if I'm honest, idk if I will outside of Six of Crows - and the production team handling a small Netflix budget. But despite the first four episodes being a slow burn, it does generally pay off with the last four picking up with the action and rising tension. If they do a Season 2 for certain (given Netflix's infamous pattern of cancelling first season shows), I definitely wouldn't mind seeing it! 😊❤

I’m sorry but I didn’t like how kaz was adapted in shadow nd bone🥲 When I read the books, Kaz was described as a ruthless boy who hides any emotion after Jordie died. When Kaz said “I need you” to Inej it felt so wrong. I mean I love the two of them together but... in the books Kaz straight up avoided her for two days and approached with a random topic about the heist to talk to her so him straight up telling her I need you just felt wrong. They made him softer and some people may have liked it but I didn’t🥲 Another thing was that in the books Kaz is five steps ahead of everyone, he looked ten steps behind in the show. From Inej’s acquiring from the menagerie to Alina Starkov. When Alina got out the chest, I’m pretty sure Kaz wasn’t just thinking okay I’m gonna tell her to come with us and she will. She’s the freaking Sun summoner obviously he would’ve prepared against her light powers. I don’t know that was just a bit... dumb? Plus Inej is from Ravka. Her going back to where she was abducted from and not go back home was weird. This is just my opinion though.

I definitely felt the same about things feeling rushed. I just kept waiting for like a cool down scene in between all the action where the characters could have intimate discussion unrelated to the main plot and really develop into their own. The entire time I was watching I kept comparing this show to the walking dead and game of thrones, which do usually have much more of those quiet intimate scenes I mentioned earlier. The comparison between this and the walking dead really stuck out to me not because I think they are similar in subject matter but in so far as the first season of the walking dead had so many of the same issues that shadow and bone had. Namely, the season is too short and there is a lot of plot and action and not enough down time in between to allow the characters the chance to develop. The walking dead kind of retroactively fixed this problem in season two which was much more quiet/slow paced and focused heavily on interpersonal relationships and nuance between the cast which developed them as characters. I really hope that shadow and bone season two will take a page out of TWDs book and make it more slow paced and character focused. I think being on the run is the perfect situation to explore relationships and inner conflicts.

I totally agree! I think season two should be able to spend the time fleshing out the characters and world a bit more - I know some people who hadn't read the books really struggled with understanding the magic system. It seems like there should be opportunity for some down time - especially on Alina and Mals side (but I'm hoping on the SOC side as well)

Helnik was amazing,phenomenal But kaz, well he just opened up to fast and also he did not have that scary aura of kaz that we love. From a ruthless murder baby he was reduced to a boy with fedora. Specially kaz's dialogues to inej were very out of character. Inej, who is my favorite character of all time felt very annoying at the beginning. Her religious beliefs are a sign of strength in the books where in the show it felt outright superstitious. But she gets redeemed in my eyes in the 7 and 8 episode so I was very happy. The actors were so good but the material handed to them was weak,specially for kaz's dialogues. A lot of kaz's character is defined by the things he doesn't say but here he was blabbering out corny dialogues and there ship was just butchered for me

I don’t necessarily agree with your thoughts on Inej, but I completely agree that Kaz sometimes acted out of character and wasn’t as smart of mysterious as he should have been.

@@JordanHarveybooks @Lauren Rosa I am scared that just to satisfy the audience who are sad about Kaz being softy-fied(🤣) they will show him going through a major change in the next season. Now if they make him as ruthless as he is in the books than the writers will also have to jump from "She is not like you,no one is " to "you are a replaceable investment". Even if they try to justify it with a traumatic incident that happens after the first season ends than it will feel like he is dumping his emotional baggage on Inej and as book fans we know that it will be everything that Kanej does not stand for in the books. The show Stans might also start calling him toxic for it. And I will die in grief the day someone calls Kaz toxic.

I feel sort of alone or an odd man out because I just didn’t love the series :/ and a lot of opinions I have about it I feel are so unpopular 😭 I think this was an ok adaptation and I’m not mad with the writers bc having to cram 2 sets of characters from different stories that have different tones and are from different timelines into one and make the world building make sense and develop relationships and all that into 8 episodes is very VERY challenging so I have to give them credit for being able to even do it well enough

I haven't read the books so my opinion probably isn't as valuable lol! I do want to read Six of Crows but since this show was already coming out, I thought it might be fun to put it off and watch first. I didn't particularly like the show D: ...I found it predictable, I didn't like the transitions at all, didn't like Alina tbh, and everything moved waaay too fast (especially some of the relationships. Like Nina and Matthias did not make sense to me..). I thought the 1st episode and the last 2 episodes were decent. It felt like they were trying to get as much as they could into 1 episode the entire time, which makes sense considering they're merging two freaking books and only had 8 episodes 😅. It felt like a show that was made for people who read the books, which is fine! and kind of obvious haha. Maybe I might feel differently after reading? Just from someone who loves shows, it wasn't the best but I do think they've done enough to make me check out a second season. If they give them a second season, I'm sure they'll expand and be able to do more. I do want to see what happens next! (Omg this comment is so long and rambling I'm sorry if you read this all the way through)

i loved the adaptation but i agree it could have used two more episodes!! Also, although I think its a great adaptation for those who loved the books, I don't think they explained the world enough for non-readers. My friends were so confused about the different grishas, their powers, the kefta colors, etc. They also didn't understand the Matthias x Nina plotline even though they are my two favorite SoC characters. Maybe with the extra two episodes they could have done a better job at explaining it for the people who didn't read the series, I'm afraid that might affect the viewership if people stop watching it halfway through because it's too confusing and then we won't get a second season (god forbid lol)

That’s such a shame to hear!! I imagine it might be hard to get into with the way they handled exposition. I feel like there’s enough to get the just of what’s going on but I could see it being frustrating. I honestly don’t think they had more time for exposition though

I actually wish the six of crows didn't know each other yet. I wish they put some of their backstories there, like for example I wish Inej told Kaz about the job at the managerie instead of them already being all in love and ish. Nina and Mathias, omg, I certainly didn't like the fact that they fell in love just because they slept naked in the same bed, it was too fast, TOO FAST! For the Shadow and Bone part, another episode of her at the little palace would have been great. Overall it was awesome tho, I LOVED it as a fan of the books! but we needed couple more episodes EDIT: Genya, I didn't like the deal. She was too cold and boring while Genya was liked because she was bubbly and cute and hot.

i agree for the most part on the kaz and inej stuff, but i don't think nina and matthias were in love yet. they learned to care deeply about each other because they had to survive together, and by the end you can feel the betrayal in matthias after he'd let his guard down. i thought it was a pretty good pace, you know, just both of them developing a small crush as they slowly start understanding each other.

I really liked the show and will continue to support it, but for me it still pales when comparing it to the books. I liked the Shadow and Bone trilogy (controversial opinion, I know) although it was obviously cheesy. I think what I enjoyed the most about it was it's simplicity, it was a YA fantasy with no pretentions of being this great work of literature. I feel like the creators of the show obviously didn't like it as much, and would have rather only adapted Six of Crows but for some reason couldn't. In that case, I would have preferred to see just the Crows and all the budget and energy put into them. While I liked what they did with the two storylines, it felt like they put the crows in only to add some excitement to what they considered a blander story, that of Alina, and in doing so have taken away from the simple, effective emotionally in my opinion, plot of Shadow and Bone, and from the incredible cast of Six of Crows. For instance, by adding the Crows to the final showdown, I think they took away from how menacing and all-powerful the Darkling seemed in the books. Kaz beat him with just a flash bomb. And Kaz himself, while he showed ingeniousity sometimes, didn't strike me as the cunning mastermind of Ketterdam. Most of the time it was the Conductor who came up with plans, hell, Alina kidnapped herself in the end. Kaz Brekker of Six of Crows wouldn't have been so sloppy, not even a few years before the start of the duology

I agree that it was a good adaptation, but I found myself so entirely bored by the whole thing. I didn't read Shadow and Bone nor Six of Crows in preparation for this (I wanted to be surprised) and I ended up predicting everything. It seems like a good show for those younger and for fans, but for try-and-true TV show watchers/movie watchers (not book readers), I think this show is going to be very cumbersome to watch.

I’m a little hesitant to watch this, since I didn’t really enjoy the book series at all. I think Leigh is a talented writer, and she is so deserving of this, but I honestly have a really hard time reading any of her works. Just the language and descriptions sometimes really confuse me. Not to say she isn’t talented (she is) but I’m a little hesitant to watch because I didn’t really like the book series, and I found some of the themes (especially around romance) a little toxic which... I am not sure I want to see on the big screen. Either way, extremely happy for her!

@@alexandra9944 I’m not sure they will. It’s very popular (and sort of expected) in modern media for there to be a limited amount of episodes, but each episode is extremely long in watch time. Which is why I think they probably could’ve slown it down a bit in some parts (especially the power climb & character development, as I feel it’s one of the most important points in the show, and now the weakest) but I think they wanted to stuff one book into an entire season, which they should’ve just split up into two if Netflix was going to give them a handful of episodes.
