A playthrough of Sega's 1990 action game for the Sega Genesis, Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi.

Shadow Dancer is one of my favorites games on the Sega Genesis. I've always preferred it a bit over the Shinobi Genesis games. I like them all, but I thought this one always felt a bit special. Even back in the 90s, it was mix of old-fashioned game play with a super modern and cool coat of paint. There wasn't too much to complicate matters - you have a magic attack and you can sic your dog on people, but otherwise it was fairly similar to Shinobi. It makes sense since Shadow Dancer is the only official sequel to the original Shinobi game, but Shadow Dancer is so much more polished.
Actually, I think that Shadow Dancer is probably my second favorite Shinobi. Shinobi Legions is my definitely my favorite, but this isn't far behind it!
The graphics look great, especially for a game from 1990, and I'd take the Genesis version's new soundtrack over the arcade one any day. The Genesis port feels very much like the arcade Shadow Dancer, even though the games were fairly different from one another. I really did appreciate how this one doesn't hold back on the difficulty level. Just like any other Sega platformer, Shadow Dancer is quite difficult. I found it harder than Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi III for sure, but I liked the Rolling Thunder-style level layouts and the art style much more in this one. The soundtrack is probably also my favorite of the series.
If you have a Genesis and don't have this game, I'd really recommend it. You can get the cart for $10-15 on eBay, and if you have any interest in the game, it would be money well spent.
