Shadow Grooves for House Music using Vocoders and Resonators

In this video we show you how to make groovy musical textures, in a sound design workflow using the Ableton Live vocoder & resonator to create loops that organically move & pulsate like percussion loops, but that have a unique quality to them. We also explore the use of modulation to cut out parts of a loop we don't want.
Covered here:
1. Using percussive loops with a vocoder
2. Using modulation to shape the envelope of this loop
3. Using resonators to turn noise loops into chords
At Underdog Electronic Music School we run interactive online classrooms for all levels of music producers. We do "bootcamps" for beginners (no prior knowledge required!) and "deep dives" for intermediate producers. We are also available for private coaching and advice.

This man is giving away all the sauce! I love running perc loops through the Resonator to make rhythmic synth lines. Another thing I often do is run 1 shots through the Resonator on a C Minor Triad, resample it and use it in Sampler for tasty dub techno stabs

Nice! I like just using field recordings of me banging on stuff like dumpsters and just sequencing a rhythm and low-passing it so it's mostly just rumble. Will have to try using something that's already kind of rich in timbre and using this technique as well.

Really nice! Many times my drum loops as they get more complex they get cluttered, and here you gave a hint of how to fix that. Maybe in the future, it would be nice to have a more in-depth view of decluttering drums and other sounds. Keep it up, Oscar!
@steeletoeboots
@steeletoeboots 2 года назад
Yes me too. I like to create busy drum loops but I find i want to put evey sound in the loop. It makes it busy but tends to get TOO BUSY. So I then strip it down and eliminate some sounds or ill just bring them in and out and swap sounds here and there. Also, cutting the low end on snares or mid frequencies has helped me clean up the low end that can get muddy or complex at times. Keep grooving!

I created 2 sample CDs 20 years ago with a concept called GROOVE SHADOW....;) Groove Shadow Elastik was the flagship version and have 4 different frequency layers to alter the impact of the shadow based on those frequency ranges. There is also a synthesizer from the 90s called the Korg Wavestation which had a similar concept (wave sequencing). My new thing I created is called XRIFFz, which are a concept to make spectral based riffs that extend beyond "guitar riffs" into the idea of spectral based selection, makes huge impacts on the dynamics of the possible rhythms. The tutorial is superb, it helps to understand the "spectral bleed" of the loop through modulation with something simple like an amplitude parameter. This subtle bleed of the sounds, along with the accents is key to the glue of loops to additional material as well as the "capture" quality of a loop, making it seem alive and loopy as opposed to mechanically programmed. This stuff goes on forever because you can also use de-esser or other sidechain tools to bring the elements to life and together.

Instead of Utility I‘d recommend to drop in an Effect Rack, create a Macro for the volume fader and use that instead. The difference is that the Rack can actually go down to 0dB, Utility can‘t. I would also use that on every channel in general for volume automation instead of the mixing faders. That way it‘s easily possible to do the gain staging later in the mix without f*****ing up the automations!
@OscarUnderdog
@OscarUnderdog 2 года назад
Agreed, except that in live 11 it does actually go to -infinity :) small upgrade. But with a macro you can determine the range more precisely as you say.
@dan_g-DreadMassaker
@dan_g-DreadMassaker 2 года назад
i also started to use a gain Plugin in the insert for volume automation instead of the main fader. so the mixing process is not interupted later (i use reason but the principle is the same). i love this approach and it has helped to improve my overall sound.

@@steeletoeboots Damn, you don't use a DAW, how does that work? Just record your sounds in a studio?
@steeletoeboots
@steeletoeboots 2 года назад
@@janderson2709 yeah, I'm kinda old school I guess you could say. I use a drum machine, Mother 32, DFAM, sampler and effects. Like back in the day. I tried using a DAW for several years but its difficult being creative looking at a screen all day. But I'll edit and remaster on a computer. Workflow with machines seems to be better for me. I'll lay down a groove and start turning knobs and see what comes out. I never plan out anything other than maybe some loops. The rest is just whatever is happening at the moment. It has really helped me be more creative. The limitations of a sampler means you can't sit there all day tweaking sounds like in a DAW. Limitations are good for you. It makes you complete stuff you'd otherwise spend hours trying to perfect. What are you using these days to create music?
@janderson2709
@janderson2709 2 года назад
@@steeletoeboots Very cool. That all resonates with me (excuse the pun). Definitely have been guilty myself of endlessly tweaking sounds until I'm bored of my own track and I have to leave it for a while before coming back to it. To answer your Q: I'm fairly new to music production but I use ableton and my childhood yamaha keyboard plugged into my PC through a MIDI adapter.
