I really liked your videos on old games 4-5 years ago. I'm stating this as not to offend you, it's more likely a "constructive criticitsm": I'm no longer watching your videos since you spoil almost everything a game has to offer: "The game has x number weapons: rifle shotgun uzi etc... You have 5 levels...." Since you are doing reviews on new games as well, I would approach them without spoiling any specific thing. I understand that it is really hard to create a review this way, but I think you really wen to the other side where you spoil every feature/item/level the game has to offer. Of course a new game will eventually become and old game, and from that perspective, your videos are really great on "everything the game has to offer".
@@googlefish80 Civvie first said RIP to him, when he was still alive...in a later video, Civvie corrected that, saying he was infact alive.....but recently he did pass, towards the end of Jan I think...RIP John Galt ♥
Being perfectly honest, this looks a lot like doom eternal too me though. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, just an observation. I've played all the previous games so I'll likely give this one a look either way.
@Astropathix XIII I can think of 3 new/upcoming games that are similar to Doom Eternal max, and one of them is probably only similar in concept/visuals. Doom Eternal brought back the attention to boomer shooters and bigger budget projects are being made because of it, but it's not even the majority or even a notable minority in the well established AAA space lol. That being said, these games are way more fun than a lot of modern fps games imo. So personally it would make my day if they became the majority.
The whole lore about caleb absorbing the powers of those he kills being a mechanic, especially once he starts killing fallen angels/demons/old gods, and keeping the cowboy 1800s aesthetic with a little dark watch style skill tree Fuck yeah
This franchise has some serious identity crisis and it became some sort of a testing grounds for the developer. SW1- horde shooter, SW2 - co-op looter shooter, SW3 - arena shooter. I bet if there will ever be the fourth one, they'll make it a military shooter.
I'd unironically prefer a straight classic DOOM/Duke Nukem level-based corridor shooter. Back to the roots of the franchise. Like Ion Fury, but even better visuals.
@@MentalParadox Considering their track record there's a bigger chance of that than them doing the same thing twice. I wouldn't mind some key-hunting and lever switching myself. That classic game design really made the game feel packed to the brim with stuff. Doom 2016 levels were pretty close though...
After completing all three games I'd absolutely love if they made like a proper Boom Shoot using Build Engine inspired graphics, as a proper throwback to Shadow Warrior 97 but with the theming and asthetics of the reboot games.
I absolutely LOVED the 2013 game, and as much as I enjoyed the sequel, I hope this game returns to the tighter, more concise design of the 2013 one. Shadow Warrior 2 just had too much of everything, and ended up spreading itself too thin. This looks like a "greatest hits" of those first 2, and I can't wait!!!
I loved the 1997 game, the 2013 too, my favorite was shadow warrior 2 (2016) with hack'n'slash style loot, and huge gameplay. But this Shadow warrior 3, i'm so disinpointed, this shadow warrior is the shadow of himself, he seem pretty with good gameplay but dont have soul and 45€ for 5h play, sériously....
I rarely think this with a review, but this guy sounds like a shill. He spends the entire time climbing up 3's ass and does nothing but talk smack about 2. 2's lack of success had more to do with its release date than how good or bad it was. It was put out at the same time as like 3 other games from popular franchises in the same general shooter category, Battlefield 1, Gears of War 4, and Titanfall 2. If you don't like something, that's fine, but talking shit about a prequel isn't doing the game you're hyping much good except to the other people who hated it for the same reasons you did.
@@Mirthful_Midori Ok. I can accept that you disliked that aspect of it. I didn't but its fine that you did. This game is $50 for a game with 5-6 hours of gameplay, no co-op, and the levels are identical every time. You have 1 magic ability, and a total of 5 weapons. Its an across the board downgrade from 2 as far as features go. My point was that the YTer spends the whole video shilling for SW3 and shitting on 2, when even objectively I don't understand how anyone can think that this is an improvement?
not just that but more games should go the devil may cry route where in ng+ all enemy encounters are remixed where you face off the stronger enemies right of the bat
For those interested, they replaced the voice actors because the old ones weren't asian, and as we all know ethnicity is more important than talent. But I can see why gmanlives didn't want to say it.
For me the trifecta of shooters that need a comeback are Blood, Blake Stone, and Soldier of Fortune, especially in the case of Soldier of Fortune as SOF Payback was utter garbage.
It's an interesting circle being completed here - Doom 2016 felt really influenced by Shadow Warrior reboot (which was a good game in its own right) and now Shadow Warrior 3 is ripping off Doom Eternal like crazy :D Still.... I prefer Doom 2016 to Eternal and I think the same sentiment will be about Shadow Warrior franchise...
Been going back and playing Shadow Warrior 2013 and it still really holds up well. Interesting to hear that 3 is basically more refined and hectic, but in exchange shorter and less replay options. Will probably get it down the line but between Elden Ring and The Wang Part 1, it probably will be on the back burner.
Not games, game. Writing in the first game was pretty good, actually emotive at times. Number 2 decided slapstick and lowbrow was the way to go and it didn't work as well.
Did we play the same Shadow Warrior 2? Kamiko's monologues and the backstory with Smith is actually pretty heartfelt. Meanwhile, I remember a lot more dick jokes in SW1.
Shadow Warrior 2 really was uninteresting. The level design and Diablo-ish gameplay loop didn't get me at all. But I loved Shadow Warrior 2013, which I'm a little surprised you didn't bring more comparisons to. This is definitely closer to that, but mixed with a lot of inspiration from Doom Eternal. Looks like a good time, I may have to pick it up.
I loved Shadow Warrior 2, while I thought the first game did all the same mistakes as Doom2016. SW2 could really have some insanely fun gameplay with the right weapons if you accept the inventory mangement and create your perfect build. With all the right guns for any situation you could feel like a fricking god.
@@lampenpam I didnt like the constantly changing arsenal, and sometimes it felt like I just couldnt keep a good enough shotgun around. I just spammed chi powers and melee the whole game.
2013 Shadow Warrior is very underrated, I remember skimming though it and not getting and enjoying the sequel, but I went back to the reboot a little after finishing 2 and I was actually amazed at how much fun I had with it and how good it felt, haven’t felt that kinda impression from a game since Metro Exodus
How can a game from 2013 get inspiration from a game that was released in 2020? Does the Developers have a Time Traveling blue Phone Box in their Offices?
I'd love to see an equivalent to Bro Force for oldschool shooter throwback. Like an all star shooter. So you have Duke Nukem, Doom Guy, BJ, Wang, Serious Sam, and anyone else that peer group.
@@El-Duderino-His-Dudeness 😄 🤣 i think that would be overkill for the 80s and 90s gamers. we would have a ❤ attack that's avengers lv awesome would totally be down for a game that features all of them. in a single story bj wang duke slayer serious same ➕ a bunch of others 😄 can you imagine if they all got together every villain and creature would literally 💩 themselves
@@El-Duderino-His-Dudeness I have long daydreamed something like this. Like, there is a bar where all the FPS badasses meet up. There is a shadowy table on the back where the dusk dude and Caleb talk dark god things; new and old Lo Wang playing shogi like grandpa and grandson; Duke is the barman, and he shoots with the ice canon on your beer if you lift it up. There is always someone challenging Shelly to arm wrestling. . Then the bus arrives and I remember I don't have time to develop a fan game by myself.
I dunno. I felt really underwhelmed with SW3. Like, everything about it, from the gameplay, gunplay, difficulty, story, voice acting just felt.. mediocre to me. There's nothing to write home about while at the same time having nothing bad about it. Its just.. okay.
Hated shadow warrior 2 because I despise grindy loot shooters but I enjoyed original and reboot glad to see this is more like those. Might give this a try.
Same. Played the original when it came out and enjoyed it, played the reboot many years later and thought it was pretty fun. Played the sequel and didn't even finish it because it just wasn't fun, even in co-op with a friend.
SW2 was terrible. 4 basic level designs and all randomly generated levels, whose purpose was to 'increase variety' but it only made the game extremely repetitive. SW3 looks like Doom Eternal Lite and im in for it, just would hope to have harder difficulties soon
@@insiainutorrt259 Ya I just find it odd how they thought switching genres was a good idea. Shadow warrior was never a loot shooter it was a strange design choice. I only played for like an hour and was like this is not for me.
Aha. "2 and 3 are like night and day!" Yeah.. 2= over 200 hours of fun with Ton of things to do you can even share with friends together if you want to. 3= Six! Hours bombastic Shadow Eternal campaign, no replay value. Full price. This is just an add here for not giving those infos
And I literally said in the video this is NOTHING like SW2 and fans might not like it because of that. Try watching the video fully before commenting next time.
The developer, Devolver Digital fired the most recent voice actor because he wasn't, "the right cultural background". Spread word of their woke stupidity.
So, seems like the gameplay takes the best of SW1 and meshes it with the tightness and mobility of Doom Eternal. I can only hope the story lives up to SW1's too
Same! 6 weapons is such a bummer. I freakin LOVED the variety in 2 and saving for that one sick gun you want. Another thing...didnt 2 have a ton of bosses? I heard 3 has 2
I must be one of the few that could tell the main character's voice actor got changed without looking it up, this new guy isn't bad, but doesn't seem to be having fun with the role like the previous one. Glad to see it's keeping the fun run & gun, but disappointed they entirely dumped the customization, I think it could've worked if they toned down the rng or made it reliable. The forth wall jokes felt like a crutch for the writing though, yeah I'm glad it's not all sexual gags anymore, but this choice just makes it look like a knockoff deadpool. The reduced permanent weapon choice down to basic designs is rather concerning, besides loosing replayability . . .
@@everythingsalright1121 Except that the original voice actor (Jason Liebrecht) didn't pass away. They very obviously changed the voice actor because of racism claims. An Asian character voiced by a white guy isn't woke.
Shadow Warrior 2 was AMAZING!! It was a huge game with many possibilities how to play it, many special abilities, many weapons which you can upgrade how you want, semi open world levels and many many different enemies! This game is small, finished after 5 hours, NO GRINDING(Grinding is fun!), no leveling, no looting, I really dont understand why this game should be better than the second part...
Loved the Under the Mayo pantscreamer, and I think you're absolutely right about that Looks like a super fun romp! Exactly what I expected. Good to see the "new" FPS style Eternal coined being put to good use!
Before you buy SW3 or anything from Devolver again, know this: Devolver fired Jason (Lo Wang's previous VA) because he is White and therefore unfit to cast an Asian character, according to Devolver. I for sure don't want to support companies engaging in such discriminatory practices.
Meanwhile we have a black playing president Hamilton, a black playing Annie all over Broadway, and now a black Arial the mermaid. DOUBLE STANDARDS! Pandering at it's finest.
@@salmaanzhang3001 Lo Wang is a badass and deserves to be as well known as Doomslayer, BJ Blazkowicz, Duke Nukem and Serious Sam. Plus I still love the Wang jokes although maybe I never grew up 😂
Pretty much every review Ive seen except this one was like that. Its like they dont want to talk about the actual game but whine about the original game instead.
Considering how this game was almost stealth released I was fully prepared for it to suck. To hear that it's actually great is an awesome surprise. Also... there are "Doom Eternal" haters?
There’s a group of people who argue that Eternal is over-reliant on panic button cooldowns than it is the enemy designs, weapons and map layouts of old. Honestly, they do have a bit of a point - you’re given four separate cooldowns before you even get your hands on the Super Shotgun. I like Eternal, but it was hard not to feel constricted at times without going for those immediate abilities while neck deep in enemies with no pain states.
@@dashieldmasta177 Yea those people are objectively wrong, have zero understand of the game and are full of shit. The flame belch and grenades are tools that help in the combat and make the game more fun but its not mandatory to use. Even on nightmare the thing that matters most is still good aim, using your weapons to output serious damage and movement. Plus you can unlock the flame meathook pretty early in the game and never have to use the flame belch. The only mandatory tool in the game that is required to use is the chainsaw that's it. I have an entire clip on Final Sin conformably destroying enemies on nightmare without using flame belch or grenades just to disprove this horseshit. Have to disagree on this one. It's not Shadow Warrior. Not even remotely. It's also not very good, just a tedious arena shooter with boring enemies and boring identikit backgrounds. It feels like a fanmade Doom Eternal reskin or a shitty 'Ruins' level from an FPS, except that's the whole game. Final nail in the coffin is the flat VO and pisspoor writing.
man, I'm so hyped for this game. It's coming out on my birthday! I have like 270 hours in DEternal, but I've never done the Ultra Nightmare thing, so I'm hoping the base Hard difficulty sits in that comfy zone of "entertaining but engaging"
This game sucks in my opinion. I prefer old-style 2013 and original Lo Wang gameplay so I'm really disappointed and upset about how they turned one of my favorite series into just a Doom Eternal clone.
I don't think an easier, shorter game is a big problem, especially if the core combat is as well-tuned as you say. If it can be used as a gateway for new players to experience this genre who would be normally scared off, then I say go for it. There's always room for a variety of skill levels. 6 hours is better spent with Lo Wang than with CoD.
I actually like the fish shooter campaigns, but yeah, you only complain about how short it is if you liked it all the way through and wanted more. Bad games you're glad they're over. And i wouldn't want to keep playing shadow warrior nor cod for 20 hours.
While I do like the more condensed, chess-piece combat approach they went for that made the modern Doom games such a success, I hope the devs (or maybe another studio) try their hand again at making an Arena FPS/Looter Shooter An FPS game with Doom's gameplay (no ADS and no Sprint) with Borderlands loot done well is my dream game
This game doesn't hold a candle to SW1 or 2. They tried to doomify it so now we just have another Doom Eternal Clone. Stick to the last 2 games if you liked Low Wangs humour because there's absolute zero in this. If you liked Doom Eternal then play Doom Eternal. If you liked Shadow Warrior then play the last 2. Not saying Shadow Warrior series is a masterpiece by any means but if you wanted Shadow Warrior in the third in the series you just won't get it.
never utilize them in games but in this one I actually did. They kind of put them in your face and like you said awesome potential to manipulate the enemies into it and set it off. A lot of fun
As someone who was pleasantly surprised by 2013 after playing 1997, and has like 79 hours on SW2 trying to get 100% Achievements. I'm super excited to try this game out as I really like Doom Eternal's Gameplay loop! Just need to get some more spending cash!
I remember watching the trailer like a year or so ago and just completely sleeping on it. I only remembered it cause Gman mentioned it in a previous video
Lol you can beat Eternal with one weapon as well. You just need to be good. Quit spewing nonsense. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L4iIxYi2Lbk.html
@@hailbane9633 Just like you can technically put a cube into square hole that doesn't fit, by cutting down corners. The question is how much is that fun. He's talking about overall game "forced fun zone" you dumbass.
I hate that they recast Lo Wang for this game. It's ironic that they thought it was unacceptable to have a white guy doing a stereotypical Chinese accent, yet hired a Korean guy to do it, as if Korean and Chinese people are the same thing...
February is really trying to kill my wallet. First game was so good and the second one made me so sad after they moved to that weird rng/borderlands kind of system for weps and levels (and the hardest difficulty was so boring cause everything was bullet spongy). I am really looking forward to playing 3!
Just finished this game and I loved it so much I had to buy part 2 on steam it's only 2 bucks .. you're missing out if you love shooters and haven't play. 💯 Recommended 🔥
I finally finished that game about 6 months ago after years of starting and stopping. It was so good. Then I played it again as Duke Nukem. Loved every minute.
Well now that I have played SW 3, I feel that your review was poorly done. You didn't talk about how they removed / murdered the awesome sword combat of SW 1 & 2. SW3 is definitely the worst one in the series. Maybe even worse than the 97 version.
As much as I love this game, I don’t think it’s a good sequel to 1 & 2 IMO. -Can’t see my feet when looking down. -Headbobbing only when you have the SMGs. -Can’t cut up bodies anymore. -Most of the supporting cast killed between games. -Hoji’s motivations don’t line up with his portrayal in 1. -No sword techniques. -You can’t bring a Weapon back any further then the level you unlocked it in. (Fixed with NG+) -Feels like the third installment to a different version of the reboot. -The tone and presentation feels way different then the first two games. -Only two bosses. -More often then not, the subtitles for the One-Liners don’t match with what’s being said.
I spend over 800+ hours in SW2 and i will love to do that again In SW3 i only spend 5h and 48 min and now i dont see any point to play this game again SW3 is basically cheaper version of doom eternal clone at this point
I played SW3 a year after this review. I was shocked when he said he'd played on Hard, after mentioning that the game was easy. I played on Hard and though most of the game was a decent challenge, I had a rough time on some of the battles. I played DOOM Eternal a year ago and don't believe that SW3's combat is as good. It's lacking combat options (frankly, every FPS has fewer options than DOOM 5) and the battles aren't as "readable." I didn't like how even when moving at full speed, I could take damage from unknown sources. DOOM 5's battles are fast-paced and often chaotic, but I felt like I had game sense and understood what I was fighting, and where the enemies were. SW3 is chaotic to a degree that I didn't like.
I feel like Gman is talking right at me when talking about Foom haters. Not literally, but he’s absolutely addressing why I didn’t like it. If anyone likes it, good on you. But I’m going to just say my piece on it. 1) Glory kills are mandatory and are a constant disruption to the flow of the game. And it often feels patronizing. Like dangling keys in a babies face. 2) I’m 20 years past done with arena waves in FPS games. It should be a feature that pops up a handful of times in a game, not the entire game. It’s a cheap way to avoid making more levels and it completely nullifies the whole point of fighting for position. Meanwhile L4D came up with a better way forever ago. 3) The whole thing felt very controlled and afraid to let players find their own fun. I didn’t feel like I had fun choices or unexpected quirks to stumble on. I’m not asking for it to be buggy or janky, but Doom just felt like the opposite end of the spectrum. I really wanted to like the game and I just couldn’t.
I'm with you on that regarding the arena shooter point. I'm on the fence about this Shadow Warrior for that reason also. It looks like an arena shooter which I think is great as a multi-player experience but as a story driven game, it doesn't feel like flows well. One of the reasons why I didn't like Bioshock 3 either. It completely ruined the story experience for me.
Great review Gman, Eternal is a game that I adore and few others were able to scratch the itch. I hoped Shadow Warrior 3 ditched the bullshit stats and numbers of 2 in favour of balanced combat like in Eternal, my prayers have been answered. Can't wait.
To be fair i see a lot of people comparing SW to DOOM. If anything as much i like Doom is shadow warrior that came out first and invented all the fancy shit you can do in both doom games
Fun tidbit, so Wang's new voice, Mike Moh, played Ryu in Street Fighter Assasin's Fist (when it was still up on RU-vid) Rest in peace, John William Galt. Also yo GMan, congrats on becoming the GDad!
When it heard of SW3, thought it would be similar to 2, loved the randomized maps and weapons. Bit of a shame they went for a DOOM system, but likely I'll give it a go eventually
Me too, super disappointed by this Doom Eternal clone... SW & SW2 were so innovative and established mechanic later copied by DOOM & DOOM Eternal, like dashing.
One of the things he failed to mention is the returning mechanic of the Demon rabbit only now it takes a different form in both you fight it and how it appears. Obviously the method is still the same: Kill the bunnies. You'll know if a demon rabbit is going to possibly appear because a purple angry rabbit icon appears on your hud. If it spawns in it will do so at the very beginning of a arena segment as a mid-boss of sorts due to the damage it can do and the level of health it has.
Shadow Warrior 2 is one of the best dumb fun games I played last gen, it's just always been a total blast for me to play. Even going back to it today I still have a lot of fun playing that game. The third game was a no brainer to me, I love how this series seems to bring back everything I loved about classic FPS games while giving me what I love about the newer ones.
Knew it as soon as I saw the first minute of that gameplay they shown that they were going for that Eternal greatness. I liked the first but the second one seemed to chase co-op looter shooter industry trends and completely lost me, glad to see they decided to now chase the *correct* trend for shooters to go for.
Wrong. The second game wasn't anything like a looter shooter, and was fun as hell. All 3 games have been in their own way, they're all very different to eachother.
The change in voice cast is what ruined the game for me. The series is dead to me now. As someone that didn't like doom eternal. The game being like doom eternal is not a positive.
I've been watching Ross' Freeman's mind for the first time recently, and he talks about how useful a grappling hook would be in lot of situations. Dude was years ahead. Anyways, great video, but it'll be a couple of years before I have a computer that can run it. Oh well.
I find that compartion to Quake 3 insulting, that game is still fun to play and don't force you to switch guns 24/7 because of artificial low ammo capacity.
Haven't played these games in a while, but I do remember 2013 being pretty good and having a surprisingly decent, if muddled story, haven't played through the second at all, and I forgot 3 was even happening until just now... I have some catching up to do. Also the "cringe" low-brow humour is just a trademark of the series and a throwback to the immature insanity of 90's video game anti-heroes such as the Big D himself, and I dig it.
Dissapointing game, even worse than the 1st. Everything feels dumbed down, upgrades are lame, extremely linear... the content does not justify its 44$ price tag, its a 4 - 5 hour game with no replayablity. Buy Elden Ring instead.
If this game is just a rip off of Doom Eternal I would be content. I think that Doom Eternal should have the same impact on the industry as Halo and Call of duty did.
Sad they got rid of the RPG/progression system aspects entirely. It was contrived and overly finicky in SW2, but with a few tweaks it could have been much better.
Wild Flying Hog has to be one of the best shooter-based indie game studios in recent years. They don't stagnate and conform on making the same game that worked before, they try to innovate or at least provide a different experience from the previous game (even if it ends up as an unfocused mess,) and follow the Reggie rule of "If it's not fun, why bother?" by the book. If they address the lack of replayability via NG+, mission select screen or DLC campaigns, this may as well be the best shooter of 2022. Also, I love how they update the Demon Bunny's mechanic in each game. It's a nice detail.
