Did anyone else notice that at the end when Magnus was leaving the look on Alecs face was clear he was thinking " did ..did ..he just break up with me?...." and was at a loss of words ....
Yes... season 3 will probably have more and stronger Malec. Even when Magnus was "breaking up" he wanted Alec to know that he loved him too, that it wasn't because of lack of love or because of Alec himself, but because of what's better for his people. If they do this right they're reconciliation and development on season 3 will be amazing.
Honestly think Malec carried this show, at least in my opinion. Matt’s and Harry’s acting was also so on point; whether happy or heartbreaking scenes they showed the emotion of each character so well and kept me watching til the very end. Absolutely love this couple and the actors ❤️
When Magnus walked away and the camera cut back to Alec, Alec looked so wounded. It hurt my heart to not only hear him beg but to see him cry. For a split second I wanted to fight Magnus.
Honestly Alec needed this he has been kinda selfish lately but its just temporary it might even make him realize that he needs Magnus more than he thought.
this is so freaking true......at first i was like, "no...malec cannot break up.....hug him magnus and be happy" but then i realized that magnus always forgives alec and alec needs to man up so i agree with you.... this was really long im sorry hopefully, alec comes begging magnus to forgive him and they live happily ever after
Alec did a big mistake yes (though I secretly believe that he would tell Magnus eventually), but it's normal that he defends his people with whom he grew up... his family. But yes, Magnus did the right thing and I can totally understand Magnus' point of view. However... I feel that even with this break up Magnus forgave him... he had to tell Alec that he loved him so that Alec knew that it wasn't about lack of love or anything wrong with Alec, but because it is the best for his people.
When Magnus said he loved Alec too and smiled after, you could just see how much he really meant it. It’s never in question whether he does or not, despite the difficult choice he has to make, and that is what breaks my heart the most 😭 They love each other so much, but their positions/status always cause conflict. It truly is heartbreaking 😩
7Mushrooms7 // Eh.. I prefer the book's break up. Really looked forward to that grand betrayal and broken hearts and pain and shining stone. I love Malec, but it's that kind of thing that shows desperation and solidifies the relationship. It shows how Alec does idiotic things because he's new to love and panics because he doesn't know how to deal with it. But in the end, the lesson's learned and their love still holds. I loved that scene :/
I just think that the book break up is too out of character for the more mature Alec in the show. I prefer the more mature break up of the show. I'd like to see them dealing with the immortality and some of Alec's insecurities in the future though, but I think I wouldn't like to see it so dramatically played out like in the books. But we will see. :)
As upset as I am about them separating, I feel like this is a much better reason to do it than in the books. The Soul Sword dilemma has far-reaching implications and they are both in difficult positions as the leaders of their people. This is far better than book!Alec considering working with Camille to take Magnus' immortality. Even though he didn't do it, it was petty and honestly pretty stupid.
lyannastarkweather You cannot really blame him, you know. After all, Alec is a teenager who is confused and pretty terrified that his first love is going to be his last but that the same can’t be said for Magnus. He’s terrified that one day he will be gone and be a mere memory. I’m not saying what he did was right, I’m saying it was understandable.
Honestly I have all the books at home and I told myself that I don't want to watch the movie (or what is it) because I don't want it to take my visions of this word and how characters look. I love their relationship in book and I think that the reason of their break up is really good and original. I know that Alec made a mysitake, but I understand that he did it from good reason for him. He just act like humans do and thats what I love at this series. And sorry for my english 😅
This scene is so gut wrenching 😭 and can I just say whoever picks out the songs and the music for the show is an absolute genius! Every piece of music every song is so perfect for the scene

This will probably be the longest comment for me on youtube but I have a lot to say hahaha So several things happened in this episode that was a highlight for me. First of all big up to the writer for doing his research and bringing the story together from many different plot holes and closing them out. I think this had to happen with the “fear” that there would not be a season 3 but alas we do have a season 3 (yay). So the first flashback was the most important anchor for the entire episode, and it was the perfect entry point. There is also one scene in season 1 that could have worked come to think of it, but this cocktail scene had the best potential to rope in an observant viewer. Seeing the little dance, they were doing around each other brought context to how Alec reacted when Lydia mentioned Magnus at the scene with the forsaken, so that was number 1. It also gave logic to his intense reaction to Magnus when he was trying to reset the wards after the forsaken attack and offered to heal his wound that’s number 2. The scene where Alec told Magnus about his wedding was number 3. He knew Magnus liked him and he was always flustered around Magnus, so he needed not to lead him on even though he was attracted. The visit to Magnus loft before his wedding was number 4. He didn’t need to go there because it was a major temptation but he still went and stood there and listened, but he was scared that Magnus was not serious, so he got defensive. All these were driven by the line “I trust you, I don’t know why but I do.” The second flashback was necessary for wrapping up beautifully the awkward balcony conversation Magnus had with Jace, even though Jace was projecting Magnus knew this was no longer casual between him and Alec and we saw that discovery when he completely lost control when kissing Alec and his real eyes showed up. (Bravo to the two actors for that scene and the director for letting them just be partners in bringing that scene to life, it was worth it, and it felt simple but truly heartwarming). This flashback also helps the writers redeem themselves after the 2x07 fiasco, I am glad they chose to be truthful in their story telling and not erase moments between LGBTQ+ couples, and it was stunning to watch. The third flashback finally lets us viewers in on Magnus’s little “open” secret that he kept guarded, his deep love for Alec. It explained that interaction he had with Dot while they were drinking and dancing, it had felt out of place, but he was so close to opening up to Dot but just said he was in love with Alec. If you watch when Alec removed his hand and went to console his dad in the scene outside the infirmary, Magnus’s realization hits him hard. The writer brought all this together beautifully, and the actors took us through the journey in the most natural way to the eventual “separation”. The scene with Alec and his family was hard for Magnus he realized he had somehow abandoned his people, and he was with Alec and his family. I think this was when he made up his mind to let go. This scene showed as well how Alec is protective of his own emotions and feelings especially in front of his Stoic parents. Izzy shined here because she is such a good sister and she can read Alec well (I hope we see more of their relationship). She gave Alec the “Dude he is hurting go talk to him” IMO this episode was one of the greatest for MALEC, it was beautifully painful, and I hope that they will not rush to bring them back together, they should let them slowly find their way back to each other in a meaningful way. Round of applause for Matt and Harry they brought it home wrapped in a big red bow.
this scene broke me completely but did anyone else see the smile on Alec's mom's face? but this scene ugh just broke my heart i cried and screamed and curled up like a baby and cried even more. the sheer pain and desperation. that little sniffle and Alec nearly breaking down as he watched Magnus go. I have never shipped or loved a couple this much in my entire life!!!!
Also @2:19 when Alec is trying not to cry his heart is breaking 💔 inside and you can literally hear Matt sucking in air like Alec is suffocating already without Magnus. Its like without Magnus in his life he cant even breathe. His lungs are burning and the pain is immense but once they makeup with each other in 2x20 and kiss again they both inhale and breath a sigh of relief like yes finally we can breath again its so beautiful ❤
it was so heartbreaking when Magnus said this to Alec: THE ONLY THING HOLDING ME BACK FROM DOING THAT IS YOU, WE CAN'T HAVE BOTH, YOU ONCE ASKED ME WHAT I WAS AFRAID OF IT’S THIS
Geez! Tear up my heart and stomp on it why don't u!?!? Damn u producers for making my heart ache. Ok, dramatics aside, I MUST applaud Matt and Harry's performance yet again. Seriously, reading the title made my heart stop, and then watching the scene, my heart broke. Bravo on the performance, boo for breaking my heart.
It's so sad this part, but I'm not worried about them being separated. Magnus and Alec will always come back to each other, beacuse the only person they love is each other, and that will never change (that sounded cheesy 😹😂), even if the first thing they thought when they met, was not spending the rest of their lifes with each other.... And more because one of them is still immortal.... But, anyways, neither problems, neither fights (nor Camille, nor the Seelie Queen) nor anything will make them stop loving and have feelings for each other (Okay, it sounds SO CHEESY, but I can't help it. It's Malec, C'mon!). 👬💍👶👦.
Magnus has every right to be upset but it still it sucks Alec and their relationship had to bare the pain of Downworld vs shadowhunters. Alec needs to stop trusting the Clave and trust in Magnus and their friends instead. The clave are nothing but of bunch of liars but i dont trust the seelie queen either and Magnus loves Alec so he better choose him in future over downworld when they get married cause then he will be his husband. Right now its fair to break up over this but it wouldnt be once they're fully committed husbands
