A quick video of powder coating lead cast bullets to get less lead fouling of the barrel and possibly increase some feet per second on our hand loads. There is not much to this at all using a second hand cheap toaster oven. The best tip in here is to wipe down your freshly cast bullets with alcohol so the powder coating sticks better.
Here are some powders from Amazon

What is the purpose for powder coating your bullets
@Richard-D

You don’t have to handle lead anymore once they are coated, there is no barrel fouling from lead and you can squeeze more fps out of a round before having to go to a copper jacketed bullet. Traditional store bought bullets are getting out of control price wise

Standing them on their bases is no more work. Put em in an ammo block nose first then invert onto a silicone sheet in a toaster pan. All upright & separate that fast.

Perfect. That is the fastest way to line them up and get them baking. Thanks man

Good stuff . I've found that if you dump the bullets immediately from the oven to a bucket of water they won't stick together or get the buggers . They will also get slightly harder in bhn to allow higher velocities .
@Richard-D
@Richard-D 9 месяцев назад
That is true. We dumped our into something that wasn’t clean do it picked up grease. Your way will probably allow us to skip a step

A collander in a bucket of water makes it easy peasy to get the bullets out .@@Richard-D

No need for the rinsing after dropping from the mold, it’s a waste of time and money.

We used an old oil change pan to catch the bullets like morons. We needed to rinse or nothing would stick. I noticed after the first batch of powder coating. As clean as it was it still left a residue

I just added in some Amazon links for the powder coating. I'll have to dig some up from the US site. There were lots of colors from CANADA and I'll continue to add more in as I have time.

I put the bullets in an old tumbler I have and run it for a few minutes, then stand them on end and bake. Works great

IDK what economics you are using but the fact you can push powder coated lead to dam near jacketed velocity means you are saving money and makes casting for rifles much more available to the common loader.

That’s the goal. If you like to shoot and if you’re a hunter in theory you could feed your family for next to nothing depending on how far you have to drive to go hunting. I’m doing this for fun and to learn new things. Damn my wife’s venison steaks are good though. Video coming soon.

Neat Video! Funny to take notice of the Lee 1 oz 12 gauge slugs. I also cast and loaded some of those, only to discover how much fun and how accurate they are when I chrono graphed and shot them from 2 separate 12 gauge shotguns. Mine clocked at 1183 FPS, holding a 3/4" group at 12 yards, opened up to 1 1/2" group at 25 yards from my Mossberg 5500 semi auto. I also found that Denatured Alcohol rinse for my cast bullets makes a Huge Difference in Adhesion over the Acetone I tried initially. I drop my castings and also the powder coatings directly into cool water from the mold and oven for increasing of hardness and sticking. I found that using a silicone cookie mat works better for me that the metal screen type basket, zero sticking and easy to clean if ever needed. I am planning to purchase the mold for my 6.5 Swedish build, and hope for up to 2500 fps with that coating. Recently I mixed a Sherwin Williams red with my Eastwood Ford blue and came up with purple. The adhesion and finished product was great. Don't know about you, but the casting and coating is a blast for me, not to forget the extreme accuracy of these castings compared to my prior jacket purchased bullets, using the identical IMR 700X powder load and OAL for comparisons, in 38/357, 9mm and 45 acp calibers. Keep up the great work, Thanks for the sharing.

Thanks man. Looks like we’re having fun and learning along the way. It’s cool to see where the journey takes us. I’m sure it’ll result in a bunch of reloaded ammo being made.

We’ll try a mix of some other powders as well so we can easily tell them apart.

It doesn’t increase hardness of lead when dropping into cold water from the hot mold. It’s lead not steel

@Richard-D ok... just a suggestion, but I put mine in for just 20 mins, no preheat not a problem. Also I just tumble or shake and bake, I have never had the need to preclean.... best of luck !... keep up the videos!

Are they safe to hunt with? I'm just wondering if any of the coating will come off in the meat?.....
@Richard-D

Copper jacket is pretty inert but the lead core which is always the case is far worse. Powder coating I’m assuming is pretty much just a non toxic paint. I was more worried about my barrel :). I’ll run a brush through it after to see any of it is on there
@Richard-D

You made me think about it. I’m going to pick a weird colour that would stand out in the meat like a light blue or something odd.

@@Richard-D I've been looking for videos of hunts with powder coated bullets but haven't found any yet. My concern is that if the bullet is designed to mushroom, that the coating will crack and flake off in the meat. Of course, I don't even know if anyone hunts with these or just make them for target fun.

My wife hunts with powder coated 44 mag in her rifle . The deer drop just as fast as with a JHP . Don't worry about the PC hurting the barrel if you baked them correctly . If you smash a bullet with a hammer to about 1/4 inch thick , you'll see the PC will still stick and stay to the bullet .It is a trick of the trade , lol Eastwood PC is the best I've used .@@jmc041071
