Since so many people ask Ill tell how I did the swap. I got the T5 from my buddy, it was from a 91 S10 with a 60 degree V6. Took the bellhousing off and then got an adapter from hotrodworx.com which goes between the trans and stock bellhousing on my truck. Then got an 11 inch clutch disc from an 80s Astrovan, this has the right splines for the input shaft for the trans and used the pressure plate that was in my truck already. Got the driveshaft shortened at a local shop and I got the shifter off ebay, a Hurst for an S10. I had some problems with the fingers on the pressure plate catching on the sleeve around the input shaft so I had to pull the box and grind them down a little and that fixed it. Since the S10 has an electric speedometer I have to get the manual speedo cable from a TH350 to hook up the speedo in my truck, thats the only part I havent done yet.
Timskunk are you using stock clutch linkage or did you convert to hydraulic? I have a 68 C10 with factory 250 6 cyl. and a 4 speed on the floor (granny gear) and I want to do that conversion to a T5
@@matheusserra8598 oh sorry I missed your response but I'm not sure where to find an adapter but it would not be too hard for a machine shop to make. It's just a spacer though you'd have to look up the measurements since I no longer remember what they are
I've watched this video at least 20 times. Everytime I think about sticking an AOD in my truck, I see this and it changes my mind. Gonna have to try a t5 in the old Ford.
You won't regret it. My buddy has a 48 F1with a flathead he was thinking about doing the same thing but I finally convinced him to do a T5. It totally changes the truck for the better, mine was a 3 on the tree
That's how you do it ! Just seeing this in 2018 . Pleasure riding along brother . Idled perfect didn't skip a beat ! ! ! Took my mind of being frustrated about my fuel pump quitting on me this morning lol
So worth it, the three on the tree sucked ass and gearing wasnt fun with only 3 gears. Overdrive is nice, cruises on the highway with traffic 80 or whatever no problem.
Sounds very nice! I have a 305 TPI + T5 swap in my ‘79 Malibu wagon. I can’t hammer on it because the clutch is fried! I bought it like that and will be replacing the clutch in spring. A “Man Tran” is the best. I know today’s automatics are quicker than manuals, but they’re still not as fun! 👍🏽
Thanks for your response. Anyway you could do another driving vid but maybe without the sheetmetal flopping around in the bed? Oh don't think I didn't catch those double clutches on the downshifts. I had an old jag xke that loved to be double clutched.
Thats the spare tire holder banging around. I keep forgetting to cut it off. I will this summer and make a video where I actually get on it, never even opened the secondaries because I had a problem with the rear china wall gasket on the intake blowing out every time.
The only thing that bothers me in this video is “knocking it into neutral while it’s still rolling “. I was taught to never roll in neutral. Love the truck!👍
I'll be picking up my 4 speed 1970 C20 with a SBC 350 in a couple weeks.... I can't wait. Watching this video again and again!! Do you happen to know the exhaust set up on that truck? Loving it. Also, do you think the SBC 350 will have that sexy motor backlash between gear shifts like the 289 here does?
i just installed my T5 into 68 C/10 i cant wait to drive it,,,not completely done with it. i used a camaro trans with a S10 tail housing so the shifter wouldnt be so far back ... it really sounds and looks like great driving,,,i got a mild 350 in it...what kind of rear end ratio you using?
Stock 12 or 10 bolt (I forget), 3.20s, worked out well with the lower gearing in the S10 trans. I think the Camaro gears are a little taller but I havent looked that up in a while.
thanks,,,iam driving the truck now!,,,iam pretty sure i ended up with 3.07s gear,,,kinda tall,,,,so i mite start looking for a 3.73 rear....it runs great! thanks again great vid....once i figure out how to post videos i gona do same vid like you,,,run thru the gears!!
Does your NWC T5 have the 4.03 first gear? I have one and I'm considering using it in my 52 F1 pickup with a Chevy 348 and the stock 3.92 rear axle. I know it won't stand any abuse, but it'll just be a cruiser like yours. Any thoughts? Thanks.
I'm not sure about the first gear but it came out of a 92 S10 with a 60 degree V6 if you want to look it up. I haven't taken the time to look up the gear ratios yet. The gearing however is perfect with the 3.23s in my truck, I couldn't have planned a better spread for a cruiser
how is the 283? I just picked up a 70 with a 1965 283 and power pack heads, apparently it was rebuilt and ran when it was parked 15 years ago, since then one of the pistons has rusted into the cylinder. Trying to decide if I want to reman it, and get me a t5, or go get a vortec 5700 from the junkyard and build that up.
Micheal LaScola it depends on what you want, really. The power pack heads are not that great but they could be fun with a mild cam. It will sound awesome and make ok power and will look old school with the right valve covers. The 350 with vortec heads can make tons of power with the right intake and cam but the center bolt valve covers will stick out as modern. The T5 wont hold up well to a lot of power, the world class is good for like 330 ftlbs. It will go behind the 350 but wont take a lot of abuse at all. I keep my 283 since its in good shape, runs great and doesnt make too much power for the T5, mines not even a world class. Its just a cruiser with a cool idle and with the intake and valve covers I have its all old school looking like it could have been made of parts laying around the garage in 1972. Same reason I put the old 4 speed knob on the shifter.
Hey I have a 70’ c10 and bought and swapped in another 350 in it, and it came with the t5 wc behind it. By any chance, do you know what clutch I would need? Because the one it currently has is reaching close to the end of its life.
This thing had 0 traction in the rain and one time coming over a hill at a stop light I was pedal festing for any grip past a cop directing traffic and he laughed and gave me the lightem up sign XD
Only reason I didnt was because every time I did the rear gasket on the intake manifold would blow out and piss oil everywhere. Its a quadrajet so the secondaries are huge, the whole frame twists when I put the hammer down, not bad for a 283. I think I have it fixed this time but if not Im going to have to get the intake machined to fit better. Its a frankenmotor, 59-62 block, 62-73 heads, intake is from a 67 327, etc so intake gaskets dont fit exactly like they should.
theGREEK7887 its a Hurst shifter for an S10, definitely short throw but its been so long I dont know the model anymore. I got it off ebay. I put an old 4 speed knob on so it looks original.
theGREEK7887 My buddy got it off Craigslist or something. They are getting hard to come by. Might have to buy a junk S10. You can also use an fbody trans if you swap an S10 tailshaft on. Some of the camaro/firebird boxes were "world class" and had bearings instead of bushings and can handle a little more torque. 88 up iirc. None of the S10 boxes were.
Yep it should and I got a hurst off ebay for the T5. Any Camaro trans will work too if you put the S10 tailshaft on it or the shifter will be way too far back.
I got this one from my buddy but get one from an S10. The Camaro and the rest of them are a pain since they come out of the floor way back, having to cut into the seat way back
Probably craigslist or car forums. My friend actually found this one since he was going to put it into his 48 F1. He ended up giving it to me when I did a bunch of work on the 48 when he put a new flathead in.
The trans in mine is a T5 from an S10 and I just cut the floor where the shifter came through. I'm not sure about the stock 4 speeds, mine was a 3 on the tree
