Thank you so much. I learned so much!!!! All my mini trucks had 5 speeds manual gearboxes. They may all be T5's. Now I am considering that for the Edsel.
Great video. I usually cut the "dangler" off of the bottom of the tailshaft housing. It's only needed if you are going to run anti-chatter rods. I use a couple of metric bolts about 3" long with their heads cut off to guide the tailshaft housing to the case. This gives you the "third hand" you need when you are aligning the small parts in the shifter box.
Got an 91' GT Mustang T5 behind a 392 Hemi in a 33" Ford Coupe, 20 years, 25K miles and its still going strong. That overdrive work great with the 3.55 gears.
Great video ! Im swapping tail shafts/housings from a s10 to my camaro T5 this is what i needed to see . Im going to swap output shafts though so i can utilize the mechanical speedo and have it located in the right place in the s10 housing
Awesome!! I ordered a 'short throw shifter' from Evilbay, thinking ALL T-5's shifter base mounts were the same. BUT NOPE. So I received a much longer Mustang base VS the Camaro shorter base housing that I needed. BUT all's not lost. I have a spare Mustang tail housing from an exploded trans that using your video I can swap out, and looks like it'll fit (hopefully). (I Really didn't want to send it back since EVERYBODY is using this Covid as an excuse to delay shipping it seems..) Plus, for the price. It really does look and feel pretty darn nice.! Thanks again. and if I mess up, it's all yer falt!! (just kidding LOL)
Great video. Ive been wanting a t5 in one of my land yahtch gm sedans but ive yet to come across a good core to mess with. Im confident in tearing one apart now. Definitely not a transmission guy either but ive rebuilt 2 automatics in my life and they both worked great. Believe it or not, the manual transmission was still a mystery to me lol
I've been dreading doing this to the T5's I have. I have an AMC Hornet that's currently using an AMC T5 with really wide ratios. It's like driving a truck. I have a 1985 WC Mustang T5, and everything I've read says I should pretty much be able to swap everything over - but what I'm worried about most is the speedo drive. The early WC T5's SHOULD have it in the same spot as my AMC T5, but I've not yet crawled under to do any measuring. I'd also hate to pull everything apart only to find out I can't do the swap and have to put everything back together.
HI, I know this video is old and I know some of you remember me from doing the Eric The Car Guy T5 rebuild video. But when you assembled this transmission, since it was non world class, you could have used the S10 mainshaft from the non world class to get a functional speedometer. Also during reassembly you left (or forgot) the rear thrust bearing on the countergear. Hopefully you corrected that. Without that bearing in place both the tail housing and upper gears will get messed up since you have now created a .060 endplay issue.
watch the video at 8:18 . You can see when he flips the tail over that the thrust bearing is stuck to the inside of the tail. Look to the upper left of the screen. When he assembles it, it is not on the S10 tail
Thanks a million Eric! You have a good eye on that thrust bearing! I did in fact discover it after the video was created (found it stuck in the old tail housing). It is a good point to all viewers that you need to be careful to ensure that is in place!
good deal. hoping to get a S10 or GMC S15 tailhousing for my 04-99 V6 Mustang Tremec T5 that i am trying to put in my 1965 Ford F100 behind a 302. Thanks and enjoyed the video
You never showed the plastic oil funnel that sits in the hole at the extreme rear of the large OD gear. It appears that your trans had been re-assembled WITHOUT it, but it's worth noting that you should have obtained one to go back in just as you are assembling the tail housing. The tail housing itself is what holds that plastic funnel in place. Coopman
I bought a T5 with the 4WD Rear housing for my El Camino. Debating on whether to spend 200 to make it look nice or just leaving it on there without a transfer case...
I have a 1988 S10 with a 2.5L Iron Duke and 5-speed manual. It appears to be a Borg Warner. The Fill and Drain plugs are protruding Box-shaped - not recessed 17mm Allen plugs. I’m being told I should use 5w/30 Synchromesh fluid to replace. The original manual calls for GM 5w/30.
I have one question, i have the same car trans. i was wondering if i can drop a shifter from a S10 t-5 in mine and be functional? i welded a long stick to stock stick witch I'm assuming make the throw on the stick long. i need to shallow that up some.
3:27 The Q & A section on T5s of the Speedway website says Camaro T5 shifter is at a 15 degree tilt towards the driver. They also say the bolt pattern is wrong for the Speedway bellhousing adapter. 10:17 missed a bolt !
I know this is an old video and I'm hoping someone is still viewing this video. I have a 3rd gen Camaro T5 from a 305 V8 that makes the trans tilted to fit that body. It appears this is NOT from a 3rd gen Camaro V8 but maybe a Mustang or even a V6 since it is NOT angled. I have a 1994 S10 with a 4.3 V6 that has a bad , I believe, NV3500 5 speed manual. I was hoping to use my T5 in this. Someone mentioned that to do this swap you need to start with WC T5 with a V8 input shaft. I'm pretty sure my Camaro T5 is NOT a WC. I'm curious if someone might be able to follow up on this subject. Btw, that thrust washer was a excellent catch.
Great video Tim. My T5 WC is leaking where the tail housing mates to the transmission case. Do you know if it pulls apart the same way as the T5 in this video?
Can I modified a regular T5 to a cossie T5 ? If so where can I get the part it will be going into a mk1 Capri and the shifter has to be move backward about two inches?
I have a 29 ford and wish to put the body on a s10 running gear. am I correct on trying to use the years of 1990 to 1999 for a good fit? wheel base is 103.5 inch.
Very informative vedio,,but the factory used black unsilicone sealant for a reason and not any silicone,,,it's bad news in transmissions,,,, exspeally bolts,,,as you said hydraulic raming and you got lucky no bolt striped out,,,,
I have seen broken trans cases because of using too much silicon, very little is needed, especially in blind holes.i had an employee snap the end off of a camshaft because he used silicone on pulley bolt.
Question : using the s-10 tail housing the ear the bottom do you really need it ? Can it be cut off do you need it ,sense the mount is behind it? I don't want it hanging down.I plan to use a 83-85for speed- o cable I haven-t seen it yet so ?
Tim, At the beginning of the video, you mentioned that it didn't matter if the transmission was a World Class or not for your application. My question, most S10 transmissions are non-WC, can you do the tail housing swap from a non-WC onto a WC transmission?
NICE MY FRIEND I ALSO HAVE A 55.5 CHEVY 3800 DUALLY W/ THE 235 N 4 SPEED MANUAL....HAVE U FOUND OUT WHAT TRANSMISSION WILL BOLT UP OR KLOSE 2 BEING A BOLT ON THANK U
Does it matter what yr. the trans is that you get the tail housing from? I need to use Speedo able for my original Speedo I was told I should use a 93- and down wc so does to tail housing need to I found a 95
1983 - 1985 S-10 tail housings have the mechanical speedo provision and are the most desirable. If you do not want to use the speedo drive (use a GPS instead) then the year doesn't make much difference. Thanks!
@@richardwimmer6846 I ended up putting the tail of the transmission in my mill and drilled a hole for the cable. Then I had to add a gear on the output shaft. It’s working great. It took me two days to set it up in my mill but one minute to drill the hole.
wrong..non world class t5's run in gear oil........ world class t5's run in atf3 or atf 4 fuild.. if you put gear oil in a world class t5 you will mess up the carbon lined synco's.....but you can try if you want
@@georgespangler1517nor can you spell correctly., was reading this on my cell phone, mate... ' fluid will cause ( sicerniz ers ) to not slide ' what is that word ' sincerniz ers ' > dont try to edit it, i have a copy of it now.. is that like the word.....' bigly
@@randellgribben9772 I'm not trying,,,word correct made enough of a mess already, but only woman worry about spelling anyway, as well as starting arguments on utube, don't know how you got gear oil from transmission fluid.. get a life I have a street rod to finish no time for petty bullshit.
