I'm so excited to challenge myself to complete all of Shakespeare's plays this April, and I would love if you guys joined in (in a simpler, less insane form, naturally). Maybe I'll make this into a yearly event, or it will be a one time thing. Let me know what you guys think!
Prompts:
1. Read one Shakespeare play (this is the only requirement to complete the challenge, and the next are optional).
2. Read each type of Shakespearian play:
- comedy
- tragedy
- history
-romance
3. Read one of Shakespeare's sonnets
4. Watch an adaptation of one of Shakespeare's plays (this can be a lose modern adaptation, or watching a dedicated on-stage performance)
And most important, enjoy Shakespeare (whether you've read him a lot, or not at all)!
Also, I thought it might be nice to have some references to help introduce you to Shakespeare.

It is great to see the play performed. I would encourage people to check out their local high schools and colleges to see if any are performing the plays. That's much less expensive and can be a lot of fun. Also local theater groups.

I will be take part in this readathon, as I have my bind up of Shakespare that I have never touched🤭 This is a good motivator to finally tackle some of his works🙌

I think I’ll give this a try. Haven’t read Shakespeare in over 20 years

Yay! Yeah, like you, it's been a few years since I actively read Shakespeare, so I'm excited!

We are going to be finishing up Coriolanus in April with our homeschool group. ♥️ We really love the Arkangel audio of Shakespeare. ♥️

Good luck reading all this Shakespeare!! My favorite Shakespeare play is Titus Andronicus and I love the movie adaptation as well! 🤗

Thank you! Oh, I haven't read that one. I look forward to reading it in April!

I'm definitely interested! I love Shakespeare, but I don't read him very often. This is a much needed push. 😊 I think I'll go with one play for now and it'll probably be King Lear, since I've never read it before. I hope I'll manage to squeeze in one more, but we'll see.
@AnneEWilliamson
@AnneEWilliamson Год назад
Yes! I remember being frustrated but enjoying King Lear. It's one of the lesser appreciated tragedies, in my opinion. I hope you enjoy it!

Omg this is perfect that I stumbled upon your video! I read Henry the sixth part 1 years ago and I’ve been meaning to push myself through part 2 & 3 so I’ll read them with you!
@AnneEWilliamson
@AnneEWilliamson Год назад
Yeah! I'm really intimidated by all the histories, especially Henry the Sixth (probably because there are three parts). I can't wait to read it with you!

I have just finished reading The Tempest and I watched the Royal Shakespeare Company version. I've loved it. For the next month I have doubts between two plays: Othello and Coriolanus. I need to decide it, but I am all in with the readathon. About the name Hamlet, it actually comes from an icelandic legend. It is part of the Gesta Danorum by Saxo Grammaticus (s. XIII), but there are proves that Amleth (the original name) story comes form before (s. X). Last year I have a crush with nordic literature and I read a lot about the influence of the icelandic sagas in the english literature :) Love your content!

Oh, so many great ones! I'll have to look up Gesta Danorum. I've been meaning to get into Nordic literature, but I haven't had time yet.

This seems fun. I’ve only read Julius Caesar, which was a lot more readable than I feared. I think I want to join, and read some histories. Starting with King John and working my way through the kings chronologically. Easter will likely bring a lot of extra reading time, with four days off work 😁
@AnneEWilliamson
@AnneEWilliamson Год назад
Julius Caesar is actually Shakespeare's shortest play, so I think it's a good one to start with. And the histories definitely seem the most challenging, so good luck to both of us, lol!

Love Shakespeare 😍 I have vinegar girl and taming shrew in Sept but I could pick up one more obscure one I don’t remember for April!

Oh, Taming of the Shrew is great! And I'm a fan of trying obscure plays, lol.

I have a complete collection of Shakespeare as well. I wish I had time 🤦‍♀️ good luck with your project!
@AnneEWilliamson
@AnneEWilliamson Год назад
Yeah. I feel like Shakespeare is just so time consuming. I mean, my copy is only about 1000 pages (and I read like 4 1000 page books this month), but his pages take forever to read and understand!
@KikiFu
@KikiFu Год назад
This sounds like fun! I'll be looking though the plays and making a selection soon. Challenge accepted!😂 As for adaptation the movie 10 things I hate about you is a remaking of taming of the shrew. There are also quite a few Shakespeare plays and adaptations included with prime video right now. I really like the idea of finding a play on RU-vid also. 👍👍
@AnneEWilliamson
@AnneEWilliamson Год назад
Yes! The movie 10 Things I Hate About You is great! I remember being surprised to hear it was based on the Taming of the Shrew. There was also a TV show of the same name, but I didn't really enjoy it. And unfortunately I don't have prime video, but I do want to watch Rosaline on Netflix, which follows the ex-girlfriend of Romeo from Romeo and Juliet. It looks ridiculous but fun.
@KikiFu
@KikiFu Год назад
@@AnneEWilliamson Rosaline sounds interesting. I hope it's good. I don't currently have Netflix. I've been considering switching back from Amazon but they just got a bunch of sci-fi shows and movies my husband wanted to see.🤷‍♀️ So maybe in a month ☺️ I just feel like so much of the Amazon content I'd want to watch is extra 💰 I'd rather not waste money on multiple streaming services as TV isn't our first choice for entertainment.

You are utterly mad and brilliant. I am so in. I would love to chat about the Henriad quartet (Richard 2, both Henry 4s, and Henry 5)

Ha, the best people are mad. And I would love to chat about any of the histories, honestly, since I've never tackled a Shakespeare history yet, and especially the Henrys.

Wow that’s a lot of Shakespeare for one month! Might join in with a play, as I am trying to read more and I only managed Hamlet last year.
@AnneEWilliamson
@AnneEWilliamson Год назад
Yeah...Shakespeare is a lot. And Hamlet is Shakespeare's longest play, so it definitely takes a lot to read that one, lol.

This year I am reading The New Oxford Shakespeare. The complete works attributed to him. They are in chronological order. That's over 3300 pages. Those I have previously read I will be re reading. I am just about to start The Passionate Pilgrim. My favourites I will study in depth later.
@AnneEWilliamson
@AnneEWilliamson Год назад
Gosh, that's a long book! I wish my copy was in chronological order, and I know a few of his works aren't included in it, but I figure I need to start somewhere. And I definitely think certain of his works need more in depth study then others.

Oddly enough, I've wanted to listen to an audio of King Lear for a while.
@AnneEWilliamson

Oh, you should! King Lear is great, though rather tragic too...I guess it's called a tragedy for a reason.
@pamelatarajcak5634
@pamelatarajcak5634 Год назад
@@AnneEWilliamson actually it would be my fourth go through. Lear is one of two favorite Shakespeare plays (Much Ado is the other). Actually Goneril's line about "put on whatever weary negligence..." Is just something that sticks with me delightfully.
@AnneEWilliamson
@AnneEWilliamson Год назад
@@pamelatarajcak5634 Yes! So great! And Much Ado About Nothing was my favorite play as a teen! I need to reread it now years later. Beatrice and Benedick were just so fun to read!

Can you read so many plays _deeply_ in one month? Speaking for myself, I couldn't. I've been hearing quite a bit about Henry VI (parts 1,2,3) lately, so I would consider that enough Shakespeare for me in one month. Maybe I'll do that. There have been two celebrated adaptations of Henry V (Olivier, Branagh).
@AnneEWilliamson
@AnneEWilliamson Год назад
Oh, interesting. I'll have to try to watch both Henry V adaptations! And I'm not sure I'll be able to tackle 20 plays in one month either, so we'll see!
@attention5638
@attention5638 Год назад
April is a much better month for this, for the reasons you mention...and twenty plays in a month? uuhhh...that would be very impressive. I mean, a play a day wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't a busy month, but still. If you complete this, I will have to put out a special video on Shakespeare to commemorate the challenge! So, I will take up the invite haha Maybe Henry V. 😎
@AnneEWilliamson
@AnneEWilliamson Год назад
Ha, it will be a lot of reading, but I'm hoping since plays are shorter then books that it will be doable. And Henry V, eh? Sounds incredibly fun!
