Shaking down a 1959 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe... Biggest fins ever?

Driving a 1959 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe.
Cadillac dramatically reworked its model lineup for the 1959 model year. The Series 62s received a toothier grille, a dummy grille across the tail, bright window surrounds, and a trim spear along the side. Most famously, a gargantuan fin topped each rear fender, with taillights on each side. The 62s also had rear fender skirts. There were four body styles in the Series 62 - four- and six-window hardtop sedans, a two-door hardtop coupe, and a convertible.
The six-window sedans had a curved rear window, like the coupe, while the four-window sedans were known as “flattops” with a rear drip-rail and wraparound rear window. Series 62s were the most affordable Cadillac at $4,800 to $5,400, and the model was a sales leader for the division at nearly 71,000.
The Cadillac 390-cid V-8 developed 325 horsepower, Hydra-Matic transmission was standard, and most of the accessories now taken for granted on Cadillacs were offered by this time: power steering, windows, brakes, and seats, as well as air conditioning. Air suspension was optional.
Cadillac’s designers dialed back the 1960 Series 62 a bit. Gone were the twin rocket taillights, the fins were reduced in size, and taillights were placed in the rear fender caps. The same body designs were offered in both 6200 and 6300 series, with the same options and engine. Series 62 sales totaled just under 80,000, with the six-window hardtop sedan accounting for nearly a third of the units.
The extravagance of the 1959 Cadillacs has made it an icon of the era, and values reflect that status. Interest in the 1959 Cadillac Series 62 in particular has led to a lot of cars being restored. The 1960 models largely missed this boom, but as a result, there are better original examples to be found. Regardless, both years are quite sound mechanically and are a joy to own, provided you can live with 10 mpg and have a garage large enough to park the nearly-20-foot-long car.

It's sad how far Cadillac has fallen, Cadillac used to build the best luxury cars and now they don't even make a full size luxury car.
@Royale_with_Cheeze

I don't like that Cadillac got in the SUV class game. To me, a Caddy is a sleek luxury sedan. I really lost it when Maserati even went that route.

They won’t invest in designing and producing vehicles consumers won’t buy. Times change. Tastes change. Get with it, you’re way out of step…

@@FrankGutowski-ls8jt I hear you. The bottom line is the dollar. But with the proliferation of sports car brands going SUV size, because that's where the market is, consider a Corvette as an SUV. Mustang already went there with their EV. Is a Corvette really supposed to be an SUV? Back to Mustang as a crossover size, I'm all-in on EV. I would rather FORD made that same EV but gave it a completely different name. A Mustang is supposed to be a sporty car, not something you might see a soccer mom dropping the kids off out of.
@FrankGutowski-ls8jt
@FrankGutowski-ls8jt Год назад
@@Royale_with_Cheeze They’re all playing with perceptions of what different models signify. Note how with EVs they’ve mostly dispersed with familiar model names and instead use arcane abbreviations and numbers that are hard to remember and basically don’t resonate with history.
@Royale_with_Cheeze
@Royale_with_Cheeze Год назад
@@FrankGutowski-ls8jt Some may call this blasphemy, but if I had money to burn, I would like to have a pristine Caddy such as in this video and have it converted to an EV. For that matter, the 1966 Batmobile. Consider this: On the show, when Batman and Robin jumped into the car and bucked up, Robin said, "Atomic batteries to power. Turbines to speed." Well, those atomic batteries made that Batmobile an EV. Of course, not in reality, but in fantasy, that was an EV.

I bought a 1959 Cadillac convertible in 1970. It had a bar in the back seat. It was a great chick magnet for the ones who did not pay attention to the year it was built. I sold it for much more than I paid for it. Bachelors days were fun.

Cars all looked pretty much the same then as they do now, in the late 50s, early 60s this was kind of the norm, nobody was standing around pointing at them saying wow. The owners were looking to buy the latest model so they could lead the trend in having the newest looking car, the public demand change so the manufacturers oblige. It looks great today because you hardly ever see them, it stands out.

What a gorgeous time capsule!!! This 59 Cadillac is iconic, especially with those huge fins!!! Back in the seventies I knew someone that had a 59 Sedan de Ville & he cut off the fins & mounted 1 of them in the middle of the deck lid. Of course you couldn't open the trunk & it looked really wierd but it did get a lot of attention!!! Thanks for showcasing this beautiful gem!!! 👍👍

When I saw him turning the ignition key and heard the engine sound, I literally smelled the gasoline. What a wonderful car out of a wonderful time, when Eddy Cochran (at the age of 21) sang: " I want my own Coup de Ville, make my dad pay the bill, yeah man, that's heaven to me..." You made my heart beat faster.

Only the 1961 Imperial had TALLER tailfins... But the '59 Cadillac was unique! I love those old full size cars. Driving them is more or less "piloting" them... Instead of steering, you just sort of give the car a suggestion and try to aim it in the right direction. Of course, is Oldsters grew up driving things like that... Anything up into the early 90s would seem foreign to a younger person. NOTHING rode like those old full size cars. Even in the Nineties when GM was still selling their big Buicks, Oldsmobiles and Cadillacs, they tuned and retuned the suspension in them so much by then, they pretty much eliminated what we used to call "the boulevard ride". She's a real beauty... Hopefully her owners appreciates her as they should.

They CAN get around 20 on the freeway. I had one (a 1960 convertible) in High School in the Eighties. Properly tuned, they get about 10 to 12 in town and exponentially better on the open road. I'd get a good 350 miles out of a tankfull.

That's my peeve with cars that are restored or at least have their suspension rebuilt... The new springs are ALWAYS about three inches too tall... If they're coils, there's usually two too many winds in them, or if they're leaf springs, the arch is a bit too high. The argument is that they'll eventually relax... But the owners never drive these cars enough, no less carrying two or three passengers in the back seat. So they end up always looking like a High School kid's hotrod project with their a$$es up too high. See?... It's a peeve of mine.😁
