Shallots and Leeks | Onions | Seed Sowing | Green Side Up
Time to sow a few more from the Allium family and today I am sowing Zebrunne Shallots, Musselburgh Leeks and Red Amposta Onions.
I have now taken the plunge and started up a Patreon space here / greensideup This gives a little more Green Side Up content to those who wish to help,support or give back to me. Hi Steve, I'm growing veg on an island in the Pacific Northwest of the US. The leek I grew this year is Tadorna, nice looking and good flavor. A few of them made a flower stalk, perhaps planted a bit too early (before an unexpected period of chilly weather), most. did fine despite that timing blooper. Favorite onion: Red long of Tropea. Will try the Zebrune shallot in 2024.

Thanks for the reminder on Leeks! I've just sown Bulgarian Giant Leek from real seeds. First time so not sure what they'll be like. Bit worried now as all the varieties I've tried do well over winter for harvesting now and the next month or so. Didn't realise I'd just struck lucky I by accident always sow late or on time and neglect them so they tend to be pencil thin late winter and grow on February onwards. The first variety I tried was Northern Lights and it was brilliant but haven't been able to get hold of again. This year's are the best ever but I've lost the seed packet, typical me! So now I'll never know!

This is the first year that I’m growing shallots, I’m growing them from bulbs, next year I’ll have to try seeds, the truth is I didn’t know you could get seeds, I never ever looked for them. Thanks for sharing your process Steve, I guess you’re never too old to learn something new.

Thanks Steve, I sowed red amposta for the first time last week, and my usual Musselburgh leeks. Look forward to seeing how we both get on with these. I’ve not had anywhere warm enough for earlier sowing this year, but thought I’d just try now as seems it may get warmer soon

Ive sown some long season crops last week! I cant wait to have them! exciting stuff! I have multi sown them which is how we always grow them! Im excited to have fresh greens next winter!

I grew Swiss Giant Zermatt last year which are great as baby and full size leeks and have done great up here in Scotland over winter. The others were the Musselburgh that you grow anyways

I sowed Zebrune last year, the germination was very poor, I did grow lots of onions so wasnt too bothered. I'm attempting again this year with one called Elista

Ive got the bleu de solai (sorry about spelling) and another one I can't remember, and I'm struggling to get them to germinate, they took their time last year too. But I got some Elephant to try as well. The first 2 were premier seeds, I've also had problems with their Zebrune shallots this time, but the elephant were freebies from Kitchen Garden, so I'm doing those with my fingers crossed tomorrow.

American Flag leeks do well for me here in northern Nevada USA. 5400' elevation and down to 10F in snow and ice in the winter (still a foot of snow here today :).

I've struggled to get my Karmen red onion seeds to germinate. I've used 2 Verve seed packets. I sowed Ailsa Craig from the same supplier and have excellent germination.

Another good vid young man - I'm in Stonehaven near Aberdeen and grow a lot of leeks as they're my favourite veg - I'd recommend : Below Zero Giant Winter Mammoth Pot I've been growing these three for several years - bombproof through to March / April. I'm also trying a new one that I just came across this year in Lidl : De Carentan 2 P.S. Where and under what temp, humidity and light, conditions do you store your Zebrune shallots as about 15% of mine always either go mouldy and rot or sprout. I also grow another giant banana shallot - Figaro - which for some reason, stores much better in the same place / conditions as the Zebrune - I'd recommend it as a change from or an addition to, Zebrune - as like leeks, you can't have too many shallots 😂👍

i bought pepper seeds online, a few different types from the same company, i also had some older seeds from the last couple years, none of the new seeds i bought germinated while from every type of my older seeds atleast a couple germinated, exactly same conditions there seems to be this plague where im buying expensive seeds nd none germinate

I sowed my Zebrune Shallots (2026 sow by date), Musselburg Leeks and some Red Baron Onions this afternoon. Bought my Zebrune seeds when D.T. Brown were selling them (and Kelsae, Red Baron, etc.) for £1/pkt last November as I heard of poor germination (and wrong varieties) from another supplier I normally use. Trying multi sowing the Red Barons to get smaller red onions.
