I have tons of these growing around my house. Been trying to find a bar soap recipe to harvest my plants this year. I have about 75 bulbs to squeeze. I think I’ll freeze the juice in ice cube trays so I don’t lose my crop like I did last year. I ordered lye and molds to try and make one using similar recipes online.

I have a few questions. Can this ginger be used in food? Also are all varieties of ginger edible? I have a whole bunch of this kind type I believe. Do any other kinds of ginger grow those pine cones?
@Sheikyerbouti8
@Sheikyerbouti8 7 лет назад
Yes it is edible, but not very good IMO. Regular ginger tastes much better. No Not all varieties of ginger are edible. Many, if not most of them, are edible, but there are over 1000 different species of ginger and many of those are not edible. I have many species that are only grown as ornamentals. There at least a few species that are poisonous. Don't ever eat any plant if you are even a little unsure of the species. Many different species of ginger grow cone shaped inflorescences. I hope this was helpful. Cheers
@alilabeebalkoka
@alilabeebalkoka 7 лет назад
Randy's Tropical Plants thank you for answering my question. I think that I will not use the roots for eating since I am not 100% sure of which variety of ginger it is.

I realize this is an old video but I have a question that I just cannot find the answer to anywhere! How do you keep the liquid for longevity? Freeze it? Does it freeze well? My grandmother has maybe 100 of the cones on her property and I would love to harvest the liquid in quantity before they die back, but I don't really want to spend hours squeezing and jarring them if I can't save it. Has anyone tried saving it? Or turning it into bar soap maybe? Something shelf stable?
@Sheikyerbouti8
@Sheikyerbouti8 4 года назад
Paul Mitchel has products made from it, so there is definitely a way to keep it stable. I refrigerate it, personally. Not sure how heat affects it, but maybe try canning it.

@rebeccaturner8340

@@amyloftus6111 I did with mixed results. Sticking them in ice cube trays short term actually works well and they're portioned for showers fairly well. I'm currently harvesting some liquid for this year and will be attempting candles to see if that is an option.

+38kimpossible I'm guessing the tidiness thing has to be autocorrect right? To make shampoo, you literally just squeeze it out of the flowers onto your hair.

@Sheikyerbouti8
@Sheikyerbouti8 4 года назад
Pretty much once a day, or every other day, while the inflorescence lasts, as long as you don't damage the inflorescence while squeezing. This can go for weeks. If the plant is kept well hydrated, it will have more slime. When it's been raining, there will be tons of slime, but it will be more watery, and less fragrant. Good luck!
