I started when my neighbor was moving and said I could have her plants. The new owner pulled them all up and piled them in the trash pickup across the street. I have gotten 2 or 3 pineapples every year and they reproduce. Last year I got 8 plus the 2 I gave away. I now have over 30 plants. Your video is very good!

Thanks so much for this. I didn't know what the yellowing meant... and now have a way to keep on top of it. It's my first time growing pineapples (Moved from Canada to Brisbane) and I have 3 small fruits growing in pots. Now I know the next step and a kinder way to treat them. I really appreciate the time you put into this video. Thank you.

First thanks so much. Detailed and easy to understand. Second, I would like to send a photo of my pineapple growing in a 5 gal bucket in sub tropical Andes. According to your video it is no where near harvesting. It is also a smaller variety and never turns yellow. the leaves are red and yellow striped. This is the second growth on an original crown. I cut off the fruit. chopped it back, threw in more compost and just watered it. Notice the suckers growing. this did not happen on the first growth. It is very exciting. Third, other than compost about twice a year, I just watered once a week in the very very hot dry season and not at all in the rainy season and threw in my daily overnight soaked coffee grounds, maybe once a month ( I wander aground the yard and share the grounds amongst numerous plants). This new pineapple is less than a year from original harvest. It is fun. It is stunning. Lets celebrate.

Thanks for this video. This afternoon I found my first flower ever forming on a (neglected) potted pineapple plant and wondered what to do with it. Your video was so interesting, I now feel more confident about looking after the plant. I just hope that after years of mistreatment, it won’t resent being respected at last!

Our Christmas freeze of 2022 was three consecutive days of 12 or more hours of 20's. Made cold frames and covered all my pineapples. Harvested one fruit day before the freeze. Some in the ground really took it hard, but I'm now looking at four pineapple fruits! Might have lost 3 or 4 plants. It was heartbreaking! Your video gave me confidence to let nature take its course and see who will make it.

I know this is 4 years old, but I have to say, you are a great teacher! My father was a college professor, his brother and father were college professors, and I was an instructor for the Air Force. I can say, with authority, that you do an excellent job of not only showing the necessary steps for success, but also showing that you are not just a teacher by sharing the nuanced details and skill that one only learns after becoming a master of their trade. The seemingly trivial pointers you give at every step add up to help some of us newb's avoid seasons of silly mistakes. Bravo! And thank you for sharing your passion and talent, hopefully I can take a step beyond what you have shown me.

Thank you SO much Steve. That's exactly what i'm going for. It was never my intention to becom a RU-vidr, But 11 years ago I joined a group for men looking to better themselves. We would challenge each other and then hold each other accountable for completing those challenges. Starting a RU-vid channel was one the challenges given to me. At first I had no idea what I was doing (or even why, really), and my early videos were pretty terrible, but I watched a lot of other RU-vidr's videos, not to emulate them, but to find what was missing in them so that I could make better videos, myself. The two things I found to be almost universally missing from mostYT videos is basic info for beginners, and follow-up videos, showing the results. Everyone shows the planting of a seed but very few show the seed sprouting, and no one shows that tree, years later, producing fruit. Thanks again, amigo.

I just watched this video, and as many others have commented, learned more today than ever. I have 10 plants and have harvested several fruits over the last 3 years. However, I've experienced several of the issues you've described - rotting after planting suckers and yellowing of the leaves. I never knew why this was happening; thank you for the thorough explanation of how to care for the plants properly.

Best of the gardening video that I ever ever have seen. At the end of it I have a feeling that "today I learnt something" Sir, I removed the crown and allowed it to dry (in shade) for 3to 4 days and then I submerged in glass of water. The crown has developed lovely roots. I will be planting it in mud tomorrow after the lunar eclipse passes, specially as tomorrow I turn 65. Wish you had said a few words on the type of soil.

I decided to grow a pineapple a couple months back but I did not do any research, I had it in a small pot and I transferred it over today. It has a good root system but it has very little leaves. I had it in just with just outside soil. I added actual garden soil and a larger pot. I trimmed off the brown leaves, thanks for the information 😁

Your leaf yellowing is a sign of overall nutrient deficiency. Iron also shows because it is the first nutrient to get locked out at a raising soil ph, which is more common in potted plants...most tap water has a ph 7.8-8.2, so watering can raise the ph of the soil, your nutrients(contains acids) are also very limited so they get used up quickly, and some nutrients get flushed out the bottom of the pot from a normal watering. A properly balanced nutrient(organic or not) contains the proper chemicals and acids that your soil needs to feed the roots. Giving your plants not only water but regular feedings is a necessity to fast and healthy plant growth.

Thank you for making a video of actually knowing how to grow pineapple. I do have a small critic, yes don't cut the tops off. I twist instead of snapping the tops off like you do but you are spot on with pulling off the small leafs from the tops for starting new plants. Yes there are new roots ready to grow hidden by those leaves so pull them off. I wait a day before planting the tops so the tear can dry heal like a potato start. I seen some wood grass at 6:15 and 6:22. Must be a clip from June to August because wood grass is dormant/dried down in January.

@Sheikyerbouti8
@Sheikyerbouti8 4 года назад
Thanks for your input. All ionic nutrients must be in a salt form, whether they be organically sourced or otherwise, in order for the plants roots to take them up. Phosphate, nitrate, and potassium, all of which are necessary for a plant, must be in a dissolved ionic (ie salt) form in order to be useable to the roots of the plant. Overuse of any kind of fertilizer is a problem. A real problem. I should know, I was an environmental chemist for nearly 15 years. I did nutrient analysis for a lot of those years, and I can tell you with great certainty, that organic sources of those nutrients are just as damaging to the environment as the inorganically souced ones, if they are released into the environment in large enough concentrations, which they very frequently are. I tend to take a more sensible approach to the use of science and technology, rather than participate in the "choose sides" mentality that seems to be so pervasive in American society today. If I don't agree with factory farming and monsanto roundup ready corn, or BT corn (which I don't), then I'm a bleeding heart liberal, socialist. If I don't grow everything 100% organically (which I don't), then I'm one of those Patriarchal capitalist usurpers. Pesticides, and fertilizers (both mineral sourced, and organically sourced), are NOT harmless in the environment. Even though the suppliers of those things would have you believe that. Likewise, organic farming is not as productive, nor is it, contrary to popular belief, harmless to the environment, either. Organic farming is certainly better for the environment than over applying ionic salts to poor soil, over and over again, but all forms of farming, devastate the ecosystem that was in place before the fields were plowed. Run off from organic farms is frequently just as toxic or even more toxic to the environment, because they never even thought to check whether they were polluting some stream or lake. They assumed that what they were doing was ok, until all the fish died. I've seen this first hand. You can't walk through snow without leaving a footprint. I'm not advocating for either extreme. There are merits to both approaches, as well as downsides. I take all the good that I can, from all sources of information, while being mindful of the footprint I leave. Thanks for watching my videos. Cheers!

@@Sheikyerbouti8 , great information, thank you. What's your assessment of permaculture design, like foodforests etc.? I make my own compost from different organic "waste" and I have had very good results. If I remember correctly, plants trade sugars with different soil organisms for the nutrients that they need, and that's the way a natural and sustainable system works, what's your experience regarding permaculture?
@Sheikyerbouti8
@Sheikyerbouti8 4 года назад
I basically do that. I've built my soil by adding wood chips from tree trimming companies. I add more all the time, and I don't till it in. not only do I not throw away any of my yard waste, I collect up all the bags of leaves that my neighbor's rake up and put them in my own compost heap. As far as bacteria providing macronutrients, certain types of bacteria can make usable nitrogen from atmospheric nitrogen. They cannot make potassium, or phosphorus though. In those cases, they can only break down organically bound phosphorus, and potassium. since you are removing fruit and vegetables to eat, you must replace those elements used to grow them somehow. Use of bone meal or potash or some other source of that material is required. My stance on it is that it doesn't really matter what form of those nutrients you use, as long as they are not over-used. Furthermore, nitrogen fixing bacteria frequently will not provide enough nitrogen for high nutrient requirement plants. This will present as nitrogen deficiency, and then you should supplement that, somehow. Here in this part of Florida, the soil is essentially beach sand which resembles talcum powder. If all you do, is use chemical fertilizer, then it will simply leach right through it, into the water table, the very next time it rains. I build my soil organically over time, because that is the best practice. That organic matter acts as a sponge to retain moisture, but also to lock in nutrients that I add whether it be fertilizer, compost, or manure. Because of this I can use less than one-tenth the amount of fertilizer as is advised by the fertilizer companies. Adding nutrients to an already healthy soil in concentrations that low, is actually beneficial to the soil microbes. If you overdo it you will kill the soil microbes, but you can do that organically too. You can actually burn a plant's roots with manure pretty easily if you overuse manure. You can do that even more easily with inorganic fertilizers, but it doesn't mean you have to. I WAY under-use fertilizers as a supplement to organic gardening techniques. This has been for me, in my experience, the best overall practice. if you only want to use organically sourced nutrients, then I encourage you to do so, but it is harder to do that while achieving as good of results. Not impossible, just harder. That's why organic produce costs nearly twice as much. Where I start to really agree with the organic gardening people, is in the use of pesticides. I also did analysis for pesticides for many years, and most of them are nasty nasty nasty. I will only use pesticides under the most dire of circumstances, and only to save very rare specimens from dying. I use beneficial nematodes, soap, neem, and only turn to pyrethrins, and copper based fungicide when things get really bad. I would only ever consider using anything stronger than that to save the life of a plant that couldn't be replaced. Several of the plants that I grow are extinct in the wild due to deforestation. I will take drastic measures to save them if I have to, but it's been years since I've had to. I have a particularly deep-seated hatred for glyco phosphate, and pretty much everything Monsanto has ever done. BTW, do not, under any circumstances, use store bought bananas in your compost, if you are planning to grow banana plants. Banana peels are popular to use in Campost because they add a lot of potassium, but that's a good way to get Panama disease. Once that's strain of fusarium is in your soil there is no way to get rid of it. Cheers
@edialbert8035
@edialbert8035 4 года назад
@@Sheikyerbouti8 , thank you for your reply. I'm launching an organic plant nursery in Q4 if everything goes as planned. Regarding the store bought bananas, does the fusarium infect none cultivar bananas, like Musa basjoo or sikkimensis? Your answers are much appreciated. Regards, Edi
@Sheikyerbouti8
@Sheikyerbouti8 4 года назад
@@edialbert8035 Excellent question. I don't know the answer. I wouldn't take the chance if you're growing bananas of any kind. I've never dealt with Panama disease, but I've dealt with tomato fusarium a lot. I recommend avoiding it. Banana growing regions with Panama disease and black sigatoka, are allowed to ship banana fruit to non banana growing regions. So the bananas in your grocery store could very well come from a farm known to have Panama disease.

What did you observe that informed you to add iron and not nitrogen? Also have you looked into and/or tried adding epsom salt to your soil? Rumor has it it helps makes nutrients more available. I can't remember which nutrients exactly but I want to guess magnesium and maybe nitrogen and phosphorous. Regardless I worked on a farm and they had a natural soil blend that included epsom I would mix up for all of our plants, both potted and in beds, and everything thrived! Potatoes looooved that mix. Great informative video!

Fantastic video amigo, thank you! I've been patiently waiting for my pineapple to ripen on the stem here in North Florida...the last time I harvested one last year I waited until it was golden yellow on the plant and it was so sweet and delicious. Hopefully no varmints get a hold of this one!

Thank you for the in-depth explanation & visuals. It is a huge help! Especially on the fertilization tips, and differentiating between pups, suckers/slips, and ratoons. I have a 3 y/o plant started from a top that I have a bloom on, with suckers, and need to repot, or can I put it in the ground? I'm Gulf Coastal zone 8b, about 25 miles north of i-10. I also have a very prickly serrated leaf African pineapple to repot, not looking forward to it. I was looking for your general location (or at least your USDA hardiness zone) to see if I could get away with trying to copy your pineapple patch in my yard, but my only disappointment was not finding it in your "About" tab. Kudos on a very helpful video, and again, thank you for the most informative video I've seen on growing pineapple!

I've used miricle grow as well. I'd mix a full strength 2Litre bottle, then put a little bit in another 2Litre bottle and fill with water, I found you could feed your plants daily with that mix with no chance of plant/root burn but did get some amazing growth... I find people aren't really worried about what's in miricle grow but more of how they obtain the ingredients in the miricle grow.. after working a hydroponic supply store and doing a lot of deliveries, 90% of the hydroponic growers or greenhouse growers use hp++ promix with mycrozhea. I didn't really understand why at first till I actually read a bag of that particular soil.. lol now it's all I'll use...

If any plant turns yellowish green, its because you are using treated piped water. Plants love rain water or water from underground, river, pond

Awesome video!!!! Thanks for sharing! I do want to ask,should you pot the crowns immediately after removing them? Or do you usually let them sit out a bit? I also see some videos where people put them into a glass of water to let the roots grow a bit. What's your chosen method? Thanks!
@Sheikyerbouti8
@Sheikyerbouti8 6 лет назад
I show it in the video. I root them in soil. Normally I plant them right away, but I've also let them sit too. Either way I get roots. This is because I'm starting with healthy robust crowns. The crowns on the fruits at the grocery store are frequently dehydrated and kinda banged up. Those need to be planted immediately. Rooting in water is a waste of time, and more likely to rot the crown.

When you "feed/fertilize" how much do you give to each plant and do you pour it on the plant or just in the soil?

Hi, Randy, I've been growing some pineapples from crows the oldest one is about two years old but it still hasn't bloomed... do I just need to be patient or is there something I need to do? Also, I'm just curious where you live that you are growing such huge pineapples but still get 20 degree winters? I live in ABQ NM and I am scared to leave them outside during the winter. Btw great tips on the yellowing plants I wondered why they were turning that color.

I read that you can make the pineapple bloom by putting an apple in front of the plant and cover them with a plastic bag. The apple will rot and itt will make the plant bloom I don't really know how. 😊

Bnd K it from the gas the apple will put off when it rots. They say this works but I’ve never done it personally. Cheers
