The ref got it wrong. 10 ball is a call pocket game. However, anyone who can play pool knows there's no need to call the obvious. Call a bank or combo. So, if the previous balls weren't fouls for not calling the obvious pocket, then neither should have been the 10 ball. There you go.

@@RealityHasAWokeBias Nope, you're just plain wrong, there isn't a single rule in either general or specifically 10-ball game rules that indicate that the game ball needs to be verbally / visually called. The game ball follows the WPA rule 1.6 Standard Call Shot, so you only call the not obvious ones. Besides, the same rule states that if the ref or opponent has any doubts as to where you try to pocket the ball, they can ask you to call it before the shot. The ref did nothing, so it has to be assumed that the ball was obvious for him, and there was only one obvious pocket - the basically dead straight one.

Just "old school" rules. Lmao. They don't even know what that is. Those are basically what mosconi played. No ball in hand. Every pocketed ball that wasn't called gets spotted. 3 fouls in a row by each player is a stalemate and a rerack. 99% of people that exclusively play "bar rules" have no idea what the rules of pool are, they play 8 ball only and don't even realize other games exist. Then they pull that...8 ball has to go clean crap and call foul if it grazes a real on the way in or call it a loss if i call it off a carom. Just nonsense. The only relevant question here is if the rules of the tournament require you to call the 10 ball, regardless if it is an obvious shot or not. If this is the case then the referee was correct, if not, the 10 ball was an obvious shot into the corner and Shane was correct. Not all tournaments have the same rules. It is not uncommon that some tournament rules require you to call the 10 ball everytime, all other shots that are obvious do not have to be called. As a professional pool player it is your responsibility to know the rules of the tournament, and if you don`t know then ask. Stick to the rules always, both players /referee and you can`t go wrong.

Although the ref is technically correct, it has always been my belief that it is up to the opposing player to tell the ref that they are fine with it; that would be the right thing to do in the name of good sportsmanship. With that being said, some tournament rules would still declare that a loss of game due to the called pocket rule being strictly enforced. When you're playing for money, you don't need to call the shot because the player knows where you're going. In tournament play, the ref is expecting the player to call the pocket. Rules for 10 Ball Call Shots & Pocketing Balls Whenever the shooter is attempting to pocket a ball (except the break) he is required to call shots, the intended ball and pocket must be indicated for each shot if they are not obvious.
Details of the shot, such as cushions struck or other balls contacted or pocketed are irrelevant.
For a called shot to count, the referee must be satisfied that the intended shot was made, so if there is any chance of confusion, e.g. with bank, combination and similar shots, the shooter should indicate the ball and pocket. It didn't fluke into the corner from an attempt at the side pocket, and even if Shane was going for the side, would he really miss THAT FAR OFF that he went dead nuts into the corner pocket? im guessing you have to call the 10 ball in this rule format. ive seen this 10 ball rule format before, so im with the ref on this one. dont assume every tourney will go by the same exact rules. shane knows this, he was probably just mostly disappointed in himself for not remembering since he for sure wouldve gone over the tourney’s rules.

I am with Shane and his opponent should be as well. Take bank for instance... no need to call anything on a one rail bank because the target is obvious. If more than one rail, the destination is called. An obvious should should require no call. In fact, 10 ball should require no called ball at all. If one is playing at the ten ball level, one should know where the shots of their opponent are going. This WAS a game of nobles and kings. Obviously some have other human aspirations in mind in today's realm.

Years ago I was co captaining a team in APA league. Had a young man ask me if he could join the team because he wanted to learn to play pool. He was terrible. Couldn't even make a proper bridge, but we took him on the team and started working with him. His first leage match he's playing as a 2 (lowest he could play at) against the other teams 2. Long match, but he won the first game of the best of 3 and the other teams 2 won the second. On the third game both got down to the 8 ball and took about 7 or 8 shots each at it. Finally their two dribbles the 8 ball in the corner pocket and leaves it hanging for dear life. Cue ball about 6 inches away. My guy got so excited that he dropped and tapped it in before I could say anything. The other teams two starts yelling "he lost. He didn't mark his pocket, he just pointed at it". I looked over at the other teams captain and said "do you really want to do that, this is his very first match and that 8 was barely hanging". The other captain says "rules are rules, your guy lost". PIssed me off, but it's the rule. Couple hours later their team captain 7/9 was playing our other captain, another 7/9, so both of these guys are like top players in our league. The other teams captain won the lag, broke and ran the table in about 2 minutes. He barely waited for the cue ball to come to rest before tapping in an 8 that was an ez duck. I looked over at my captain and he shook his head at me like "no, don't". But I did. I called across "sir, rules are rules, and therefor you just lost because you didn't call your pocket". He argued that that was bullshit because he and Jeff(my team captain) have played against each other for years and they didn't have to mark their pockets. I told my captain that if you break those balls, I'm out of here. He was an ass to the kid that I just brought on the team and now wants to ignore the very rule he cited. My captain backed me and it pissed the other captain off, but I made it a point from then on to all of my teammates,... call your pockets.

So my argument is: rules are rules. There were a lot of shots leading up to the 10 ball that were hard cuts. I seen at least 3 shots that weren't obvious and weren't called. The ref was wrong through the whole rack cause shane didn't call any pockets before the 10 ball. The match was rigged for Shane to loose. Congrats to the ref for manipulation.
