US and Asia is separated by the huge expand of Pacific Ocean and at least 10,150km from US west coast to an Asian country. WW2 started in Europe by the Germans while in East Asia Japan invaded China & then it was Japan that bombed US’s Pearl Harbour and colonize Taiwan Island. No other Asian countries did that. So Japan is a potentially a very dangerous country & must be stopped from instigating or starting war in East Asia & ASEAN region.

(the so-called strategic ambiguity Taiwan card) .... and then, trying to persuade ASEAN to do so and to be on its side by by being a member of the so-called "Asian NATO" To ASEAN, it is not a matter of "taking side" but it is a matter of principle, integrity and credibility ...... the nations of ASEAN cannot afford to lose their credibilty and integrity by dishonouring their words and agreements with CHINA .... they are not like US with its superpower that can exercise its "Might makes right" policy coupled with a Congress which has the privilege to legislate laws/acts to modify or nullify what had been agreed upon by its POTUS or the executives administration (In fact, US can even threaten to blacklist & sanction the panel of judges in ICJ if they dare to disobey US' orders or instructions) .. 😄😄!! IMO, on the South China Sea issues, PRC is trying its best to resort back to the amicable relations and agreements that it had with Mr Rodrigo Duterte (the former President of Philippines) instead of the present confrontational relations with Mr Bongbong Marcos, the President of Phillipines.
