I think it’s more about stability.. having a balanced household means that you’re responsible for someone other than yourself.. and if I have billions on the line, I’m not trusting that to someone who doesn’t have something (meaningful) to lose.. too much of a wild card.. and the NBA and their publicly-traded business partners aren’t into wild cards lol.. I also think it was two different times so the media and how things were shared were totally different. The magic Johnson scandal happen in the early 90s while Tiger Woods was like in 2009. The Internet definitely was a huge factor in difference for a lot of the blowup as well. I do agree with Shannon, but I do think that the Internet help pushed the narrative too.

I see what you were saying in terms of branding and image being used to bolster your business. But I think in terms of todays NBA, being the face of the league, it doesn't hold as much weight. If anything, being single and actively dating other celebs could probably boost their profile much more than being married. A great example of that is Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift.

Brady was still a family man when he played though, kissing his kids on the lips while getting physio and what not. If anything Brady proves the point. There was prob a lot more turbulence for much longer but we didn't hear about it until he was on his way out of the league so no harm no foul. If Kobe hadn't completely rebranded he damn sure wouldn't have continued to be a league ambassador. Zion was in line and then he got caught up and nobody pays him mind now. What are some of yall talking about. When the NBA was trying to sell Steph as the new face of the league they kept showing how is Parents was still married and a nuclear family and how he was the same. Marketing teams love to sell that type of image to promote products.

I'll be glad when this crap is over & we can get back to just discussing & actually watching basketball... Yes, image matters, but Magic didn't officially marry Cookie until 1999. He was partying hard in LA & just being Magic while he dated Cookie off & on (since College). Bird didn't tie the knot until 1989 & Shaq married Shaunie in '02. These guys were still faces of the league. The face of the NBA was always about being great individually, & put WINNING first. Yes, for the business side of things the off-court stuff matters, but yall keep pushing all these lame narratives & us real basketball fans are tired of it.

Gilbert is on to something about his comments on women being the focus of marketing, though I wouldn’t limit it to just single women. Women make between 70-80% of consumer purchasing decisions. They decide how the purse gets spent and so you have no choice but to ensure you are appealing to them.
