To me, once Aaron Gordon and Zach Lavine did their thing, and the judges didn't grant Gordon at least 1 title, to me, that's when I lost interest. What VC did, individually was amazing, but what Gordon-Lavine did, was our generation's MJ-Dominique.

LeBron not doing the dunk contest didn’t help, but it was doomed to become irrelevant anyways. When Jordan and others in the 80s and 90s were competing there was little to no internet. So, if you wanted to watch them dunk over and over again you had to watch the dunk contest. Now with RU-vid and highlight reels super accessible the contest has lost some relevance.

the novelty wore off ages ago. Jordan in the dunk contest in the mid 80s when most people didn't even have cable, you couldn't watch him that often etc is way different than being able to watch any game you want and pull up any highlight you want in 2 seconds on your phone.

Honestly the dunk contest is just limited by human capabilities. Mfs have done every 360/alley oop/ between the legs/ variation you can think of. Until a mf can backflip and dunk we gon say it’s dead. There is very little room for innovation because either it’s already been done or damn near impossible to do and these players not gonna spend hours practicing near impossible dunks for a once a year competition and risk injury. The contest has just reached 97% of its 100% limit and until some generation with even more athleticism comes through this is what we gon see

I am interested in sports again because of how you, your guest, and co-hosting perspectives. When I was growing up, I remembered all the players from the Dunk Contests. Thanks for helping me understand what was going on in the contest. I was wondering why it didn't last. I am enjoying hearing the stories and laughing. Thanks. Something a lot of people are missing every year this discussion comes up since the mid 00s or so is the fact that after years of dunk contest fans have pretty much seen every possible dunk a human can do. Think about it the first time you seen a dude jump from the free throw line or a 360, under the legs behind the back ect… it was exciting because there wasnt 30 years of previous dunk contest highlights in the 80s 90s. Thats also why guy in recent years use so many props because they have to think of something new. Just learn to enjoy it for what it is.

When Jordan and Dominique did it there weren't a whole lot of dunkers in the league or internet. So it was awesome to see them dunking in a competition. Then came Vince and placed the bar so high that what only came close to that was Aaron vs Lavine and it was because of the rivalry that formed right there that made us think of Jordan vs Dom. We need to field 4 dunkers so it is a 1v1 to advance for a second 1v1 and have like a baseline 1st round where the dunkers highlight vertical and hangtime distance they get the baseline 25 for that part and then work the other 25 in creativity in the next rounds. In the first 1v1 you do 1 dunk to pass but can challenge again one more time. On the second 1v1 which is the final each contestant does 2 dunks but scorecard is hidden cause judges the best of the 2 dunks for each player through crowd applause and show score for that 1 to select the winner.

Make the dunk contest set up like gymnastics. Gymnastics has a categories-floor routine, balance beam, high bars, and so on. The dunk contest could have different categories for dunks ( between the legs, distance away from the rim, alley-oop, creative your own, etc.) there could also be a formal award at the end of the year for best in-game dunk (if there isn't already)

What if they did a shoe brand dunk/3pt contest. So each major brand can send a player they have signed or it could push non signed players a chance to showcase and maybe deal with one of the less know shoe brands and represent them. NBA can use the shoe brands to incentivise their players

The dunk contest shouldn't have just big names that are good in-game dunkers. It should have the most creative dunkers. I like McClung, at least he's trying to do new stuff. I wanna see "no name" guys like Lecque in the contest, at least they can put on a show.
