Shapeshifting Deepstaria Jelly | Nautilus Live

During these first ever ROV dives in Revillagigedo Archipelago, the Nautilus team has encountered some truly otherworldly organisms. This Deepstaria jelly awed us with its shapeshifting abilities as its bag-like bell inflated and undulated with current created by movement of ROV Hercules. Capturing prey in its voluminous bell, a strikingly geometric network of canals delivers nutrients throughout this large jelly’s body.
This close encounter was captured with both our normal ROV Hercules HD camera and a low light camera for bioluminescence designed by Dr. Brennan Phillips at University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography and David Gruber at the City College of New York/Baruch College.

@@danielschechter8130 Do the lasers have a computer measuring capability, or do the two laser points have a fixed distance?
@danielschechter8130
@danielschechter8130 3 года назад
@@2degucitas I believe the laser beams are parallel, so they're always a fixed distance apart. Pretty cool because if you're viewing through a curved window (to resist the outside pressure) everything appears much smaller than it is. I don't know whether the cameras they have on Nautilus Live have that issue. But the two laser dots will always be the same distance apart. When I went down in the sub Idabel in Roatan it was crazy. There was a tiny flat window in the floor that did not distort, but the big forward view window made everything tiny.

Well these guys are pretty hard to collect for study alive. Just look at the way the thrusters' "wash" impacts it! You can't grasp or grapple them, so I think pretty much if the vehicle isn't ready to capture it by maneuvering it into a cannister, they probably let it go on its way. And remember they are pressed for time in every observation session, for studies they are already committed to.
