My family and i actually lived under the man who died. I complained the whole time i was there because he would always yell. And we found out he smoked cigs and weed with his tanks. We knew it was only a matter of time. Thankfully we moved to where we are now. I feel awful so many people had to lose their homes.

Why do they call a snorkel a squad? I'm used to hearing squad used for rescue and support units.

GARY HESS Chicago runs two piece squads. One unit is the snorkel, designated by the number and the letter A, such as 7A, as you see here. The other unit would just be squad 7, which is the more traditional resuce box style truck that you are thinking of. You can catch a glimpse of it around 0:45 and 8:25 on the left side of the screen. They always run together as a unit. Fire commissioner Quinn invented the snorkel back in the 50s, and has been a CFD staple ever since.

FDNY designating specific pumpers as "squads" always throws me for a loop, so I understand the confusion. 🤓 Robert C has the explanation. The lone remaining single (reserve) snorkel, call sign 6-6-1 is in fact referred to as "snorkel", so CFD does understand the difference 😉 Of course, before the new/current Rosenbauer rigs came on, it was more confusing; O'Hare's Squad 7 was actually a single long-chassis walk-in rescue (affectionately dubbed "squadzilla"), and since there wasn't a matching snorkel for it, call sign "Squad 7A" was _formerly_ synonymous with 6-3-7, the minipumper designed to get inside the parking structures. Now that snorkel 7A exists, the call signs are separated.

FDNY squads are four-in-one units. they are basically an engine, truck (minus the big ladder), hazmat, and rescue all in one. they have a 1st due where they function as an engine, but are called to major incidents outside their normal area

just because you are on an aerial does not make you immune to smoke! are there interior operations going on?

Surely the two guys in the Squad 7 Snorkel bucket should have been ordered to get their B.A? kits on. I dread to think what they were breathing in. Also, I'm wondering why the Snorkel is carried on such a short chassis? Over here Snorkels (getting quite rare now due to being replaced by Brontos or other skylift cherry picker types) were always on longer chassis. Great video mate, sorry for the poor person who died.

CFD has plenty of long-chassis tower ladders for water tower work, and the long-chassis reserve snorkel (6-6-1) that only gets called out for major industrial fires; the squad units are short-chassis for shoehorning into tight spots like into a car's parking slot (as they did here), narrow old streets, lakefront piers, or alleyways. They are two-rig sets, a snorkel (the "A" unit) and a "mobile toolbox", which carries equipment for every possible rescue scenario -- including an inflatable raft for water rescues, to supplement CFD's dive team!

Suburbs of chicago, like where this incident happened, don’t have long chassis snorkels, I only know of 3 actual snorkel trucks other than CFD and they are all built on a shorter chassis

Chicago doesn't wear scba and these videos prove they don't wear them so don't cry if they die from Cancer

Sad to see a major department allowing close operation without scba. Shame on them.
