Also what gets lost in history is the strategy never worked against Shaq. Shaq was like a 70% free throw shooter during hack a Shaq situations. Shaq is fairly clutch even if he isn't a great shooter. I remember Portland trying it in the WCF and Shaq went like 9/10 from the free throw line. Shaq isn't a great free throw shooter in most situations but he would make the ones he had to.

“If you gotta use strategy to beat me, that’s just telling me you’re soft.” That might be the dumbest remark to ever come out of Shaq’s mouth. It’s called ‘being smart’. If you can’t make a free throw, you better expect to get fouled in late game situations. It’s a great strategy. Don’t like it? Here’s a simple solution: Make your free throws.
@sirm.a.r.s4640
@sirm.a.r.s4640 3 года назад
I can see it both ways. It's smart because people are at a disadvantage and try to get a one up. On the other hand,you can't be a man in the nba scared to defend another man. Why compete if you back down from competition? It's like taking charges as a grown man you going to stand and wait for another man to plow you over?

@sirm.a.r.s4640
@sirm.a.r.s4640 3 года назад
@@elijahjacob872 I see it in both ways. It's dependent on the competitiveness of the player or the mentality of a player. Some players embrace that challenge, some others need to strategize because they can't straight up challenge the matchup. Pop will strategize because he is a coach he doesn't play these players his ministate is different, the players however falls in those two types of categories, do they want to embrace the challenge? Or strategize because they can't embrace that challenge. I can understand shaq being super competitive balling against hakeem,zo,ewing,robinson and then get to an era where they don't want to guard him no more let alone play against him by getting him out the game via hack a shaq. I can understand how shaq could think playing against other NBA players thinking how sad it is they don't want to compete against him. As far as charges go, it's a tongue in cheek jab to 80s 90s mentality. Some may think it's stupid, others will want to stop their opponent and standing waiting to be knocked over is just a different mentality to some people.

It bothers Shaq because the strategy exposed a mental weakness. Yes, Shaq had awful form and touch for free throws, but he also made many of those shots in practice no problem, often even 80 out of a 100. So what was the difference? The stage and the pressure. That doesn't mean Shaq was bad under pressure in other aspects, he performed well in pretty much every other aspect of the game under pressure, but when it came to free throws, when he would have to step up to the line where it was nothing but him and the basket and it forces a different rhythm of the game, the pressure and the stage affected him to go from oftentimes 80% in practice to 50% in games. Having an internal weakness exposed is often harder to deal with than having a physical weakness exposed, and that's what you're seeing here.
